  • Decent splitter if you accept it's design
This little guy generally worked as I expected it to. Its not very sharp, nor large, but its small enough that I throw it into my portable firepit and take it with me to a site. My main draw to it was its short height and stable dimensions, so that inaccurate swings don't topple the whole thing over. The short height also dictates that you're not splitting logs, and this is strictly for making kindling, and it worked well in that aspect. I buy split logs and used to hack at it with an axe to get kindling, and its fun for the first 2 minutes and then it gets old and dangerous. With this, I am able to take short logs, WITH straight grain, and safely get kindling out of it. You're not splitting logs in half or anything of sort, because its short height only allows a couple of inches of penetration before you bottom out and have to split the rest of the log the old fashioned way. It did arrive damaged though, with one corner being bent after it was obviously dropped during shipping. The edge cut through the protective sleeve and cardboard box, and 2mm of the corner could have hampered it's effectiveness. An angle grinder fixed it up for me, but they should package it a bit better so its not as dangerous should it fall on someone's toes. Anyways, with its small size, portability to take with me in my firepit, and ability to split small logs with a deadblow, I'm happy and glad I got it. Lastly, look at this weld. It looks super solid, but also far too even...is this that laser welding stuff? ... show more

  • Solid heavy duty welded construction with super heavy gauge steel. This little thing is a beast.
Love it! Small, but HEAVY duty. So much safer and easier than splitting with a hatchet and a hammer. SOLID and THICK welded construction. I think it would quite literally take generations to wear this thing out. Oh, and the dimensions make it super stable too. I can't imagine a better design. I'm using it to split up kindling for the fireplace and for splitting up hickory for the smoker. I have been using a hatchet and hammer for years, but this is so much easier and safer. It works like a charm. Some of the hickory can get pretty knotty or twisted, and every once in a while if I pound the hatchet head too hard with the hammer, I chip the head of one or the other. Had a chip imbed in my hand pretty deep, so I thought I'd try a better method. This little anvil/wedge splitter just works great! Now I just set the wood on top, hit the wood (NOT metal) with a 3 lb sledge one or twice, and viola. No problems, no real effort, no risk, no sharp hot metal stuck in my hand. You can see the thickness of the steel in the pics. The listing mentions camping, and it is small enough that you could pack it. Don't know that I'd want to carry a huge hunk of steel if I had to backpack it in though. It really is pretty heavy and solid. If you have a smoker or if you use your fireplace regularly, then I absolutely 100% recommend. ... show more

  • Great concept. Flops at the finishing touches.
This little guy is hefty, sexy, and heavy-duty. It looks very sleek for a hand tool and gets the job done. However, the black coating chips off quickly with use, so I'm not sure how long that aesthetic quality will actually last in practice. I was able to evenly split wood up to about a foot long with it, similar to the pieces in the official photos. Anything longer, and the split veered off-course. This is probably due to a combination of my inexperience and the nature of mini wedges / wedges with such short and wide bases. But it's plenty for me as a wooden hair pin maker. The flat bottom and stable shape negates the need for clamping anything, so I can work much more quickly than I could with just knives and chisels. Unfortunately, my splitter did have a chip and a burr on the blade right out of the box. Although they didn't show up well in my photos, it demonstrates a lack of quality control. A clean cutting edge should really be the bare minimum for this type of product. The blade cover also did not reach all the way to the edge, so I have easily cut myself on the corners when moving it in and out of storage. The partial cover just ends up giving you a false sense of security. ... show more

  • It Works
Was pretty disappointed at how small it is, when I got it. Was picturing more. It does work better than I thought it would, at first glance, but not as good as bigger versions. Would be nice if it came with a mini sledge hammer. I have one, but a neighbor is borrowing it, so I've been using the back of an axe, and it's a little awkward. I would recommend it for small pieces of kindling. And, the shorter the better. Personally, I'd prefer a much bigger model, that comes with a hammer. ... show more

  • Nice little splitter, that can be screwed or nailed down.
This little kindling splitter is surprisingly effective for its size and has quickly become one of my favorite fire starting tools. It is compact enough to toss into a camping bag or keep next to the fireplace, yet it feels solid and well made. I like that it lets me split small logs safely using a hammer instead of swinging an axe, which makes the whole process faster and much safer. The steel construction feels durable and stable, and it produces consistent kindling pieces that light easily for fireplaces, fire pits, and BBQs. Whether at home or outdoors, it saves time, effort, and frustration when starting a fire. ... show more
