I bought this out of curiosity. I find I use it a lot. I do not have a shop so my projects are done inside on a table or outside where ever. I used to have a woodworking shop at my previous house and I do miss my regular shop tools. I find the accuracy to be good. Stores small, lightweight but solid and well designed. Well designed useful base with V groves for round stock. For small projects and portability this DrillMate does well. At this price point, I wish I had purchased one long ago. Disadvantages: No drill through base so anything you drill has to fit between the bit and the base. With my battery drill, or any drill, this tool is top heavy and will try to fall over when you take your hand off the drill. Just be aware and hold on to it or secure it with a clamp. Considered drilling two holes in the base so I could screw it down to a base, but as yet haven't. That is an option. Would I buy it: Yes. Would I recommend it: Yes. It is Not a drill press, but it does a good job for it's capabilities. Even when I buy another drill press, this Drillmate will still be worth having. ... show more

Often when drilling just having a hole is enough. You can even freehand a clean hole or two, but if you do a enough you will eventually make some sloppy or slightly misaligned holes. I was making some decorative shelves and needed to drill several rows of precisely even holes to a matching depth. I built a jig with this and some of my scrap wood. I was able to drill consistent holes to within about half a millimeter laterally and about a 0.1 mm on the depth. This has 4 holes in the base that can be used to screw it down. It has stops for angled drilling (which I didn't try) and this works standard chucks and bits. There is a depth stop on one of it's poles, it is friction fit which concerned me but it worked well. ... show more

Purchased to drill holes for bench dogs. It's sturdy and well made and the chuck is high quality. It's a guide and not a drill press, it takes a bit of skill to use and you can drill off axis if you're not careful. But it's a lot better than freehand drilling. It will hold up to a 3 inch hole saw as well, and it also makes that kind of drilling much easier. There is a depth stop which can come in handy. Overall glad I purchased it. ... show more

In my one use so far, it has performed pretty well. The main complaint is that the tightening screw on the depth stop stripped out during my first use. I've switched to using tape to mark the depth that I need to stop at. Hopefully there's a more robust option-- some kind of pipe clamp, perhaps-- at the hardware store? We'll see. I used this for various stages of building a bass guitar; body/neck ferrules (in place of a neck plate), bridge and control plate screws, string tree screws, and a 45-degree foxhole for a bridge grounding wire to the control cavity. I did not want to buy a drill press to simply drill some dowel holes into some wood. This works great. I can mount it directly to my wood surface, set my depth, and let it bump. No need for the huge machine. Perfect little compromise.
