First time using a metal catalytic converter . it works well, heats up pretty fast and start its job much quicker than the ceramic one. before all the logs catch fire completely, this catalytic converter starts burning and it produces heat at 800F. now the logs burn completely and clean, and also no more Black tar residue on the glass. This catalyst lights off early and stays lit for hours. It also produces a blue flame very easily. I highly recommend this over the ceramic version which I had and managed to crack. Also make sure you use the included gaskets and kaowool

Swapping the old catalyst out for this new one should be very trivial. If your old one doesn't want to come out trivially, likely parts of the old catalyst are broken and sticking out the back of it, blocking it from sliding down. I had to pull out chunks of the previous (ceramic) catalyst bit by bit for a couple minutes before it came out, but that's on me for running with a dead catalyst for so long - it should've just dropped right out, and I expect that this metal one will without issue. The wood stove heats up way more quickly now and breathes much better, but I'm remembering now that this wood stove is too warm for all but the coldest times here! with the old dead catalyst it didn't supply nearly as much heat.

I had the Ceramic but they start falling apart after a few years so I thought I'd try this metal one. I think it will last better but it seems to have a lot more air flow and even dampered down all the way I'm burning a lot more wood to keep the house at the same temp as before with the ceramic combustor.

I finally realized that after 15 years, my catalytic combuster probably was shot. In one section the ceramic piece had broken in two and the remaining sections were looking pretty sad as well. I did a lot of research and although there aren't a ton of people making this product, this company had garnered favorable reviews and their pricing was better than the direct replacement from the fireplace company, and I'm not even sure I could have gotten a metal one from the manufacturer? I just feel that the metal one will hold up better over time, so I spent a few bucks more to upgrade from ceramic. These things are still very, very expensive, so hopefully I don't ever need to buy another one. This one fit a Fireplace Xtrordinaire, 2008 vintage. I think it's their Elite 36 model.

i gave one star to sheerness because i don't know what that adjective has to do with a fireplace combustor. am i supposed to cradle the thing in my arms and take a pic with it for insta to illustrate the sheer joy it brings? does sheerness have to do with some kind of geometric rating that establishes the craftsmanship when it comes to making a nearly $500 rectangle? (B*sh, rectangle is spelled $500 around here). what i do get is that the old combustor (which has no recorded sheer rating) fell right out the combustor hole one winter morn, shattered into pieces and provided a valuable life lesson about the need to take of all things that cost nearly $500. may i never need buy another. also, it photographs best if you hold it at an angle during the magic hour while sucking in your stomach and arching your back.
