  • Great diver
Color: Black on Stainless Steel
I have been looking for a high quality dive watch at the $800 or less range for a while now. I had been considering Tissot and Hamilton but then I found the Mido Ocean Star and I am very impressed. The Case This is the stainless steel model very well done. It is predominantly brushed with the beveled edges and bezel being polished. It has a very nice weight on your arm, but if you are looking for light weight, this model is offered in titanium as well. The crown is screw down, thus the 660ft/200m depth rating, Once the crown is properly screwed in after adjustment, the shoulders on the crown protectors hide any edges making wearing more comfortable. The bezel rotates smoothly with a gentle click at each detent position. The only thing that could be considered a drawback is the fact that there is no exhibition case back; you cannot see the movement or winding rotor. The case back is the etched with the Ocean Star logo, a stylized starfish in water. It should be remembered that the Ocean Star is a true diver watch and an exhibition case back reduces the maximum depth rating. The crystal is sapphire and is anti-reflective coated on both sides in a similar fashion as Omega or Tag. It doesn't sound like much but it really makes a difference in how the watch appears and reads. The Band The band is quite comfortable. The individual link fit is tight and smooth given this watches price point. It's not at the level of a Rolex band, but it is much, much better than some other watches at the same price point that I've experienced. The Mido dive extension is particularly good. Mido has a ratcheting dive extension mechanism built within the clasp. You can essentially fine tune the fit at any time with this feature. The Movement I was skeptical about the Caliber 80 movement at first, not because of quality issues (this movement keeps very good time) but because of the movement of the second hand. The Caliber 80 movement is the same as the Tissot Powermatic 80. The 80 refers to amount of reserve power hours the movement keeps. The sacrifice for this 3 day power reserve is that the VBH, or vibrations per hour is much lower than the base model 2824 movement on which the Caliber 80 is based. This means that the hand second hand does not move around the dial as smoothly as other higher VBH movements. That being said, I now love this movement. I can take it off on Friday, leave it over the weekend, and come back to a running watch on Monday. The hands are simple and elegant, but the second hand tip marked in red is a detail I really enjoy. The lume on the hands and hour indices is bright and easy to identify. The dial is matte black and pairs very well with the double anti-reflective coating of the crystal to make the watch easy to read at a glance. Final Words In all honesty I will probably never dive with this watch. I will swim or surf with it every now and then but really I bought it because I've always wanted a simple day/date automatic diver that is robust enough to swim with but elegant enough to wear as a dress watch. This Mido piece ticks all the boxes I was looking for and more. I've worn it almost every day since I got it. It's on track to being one of the watches I wear the most. UPDATE As of May 1st 2017 this watch has been running strong and keeping time very well. I've had no problems with this watch at all and I've been wearing it almost every day. My only, very slight issue is that the clasps does not snap closed as easily as it once did. I would still give this watch 5 stars. ... show more

  • Best Swiss dive watch for the price, hands down.
Color: Black on Stainless Steel
Two words: quality craftsmanship. You can tell whoever is in charge over at Mido really does not want to cut any corners, even at this affordable price point, and I truly respect that. The crystal is double AR coated and LITERALLY disappears. The case and bracelet are finished to an incredible standard, with fine brushing and polished bevels on the sides of the case that extend down to the sides of every link on the bracelet and the clasp. The clasp itself is fully milled, thin, and provides one of the best (and lengthy) ratcheting dive extensions I’ve ever seen. The bracelet is adjusted via screwed links, provides great articulation with a nice taper (from 22mm to 19mm at the clasp), and comes with half links, which ensure a perfect fit (especially with that dive extension). The caseback is engraved to an impressive standard with the Mido starfish ocean star logo, held down with screws, and helps this timepiece retain its 200m water resistance rating - with a case thickness of just 11.7mm (thinner than a Rolex submariner). The lume is BGW9 superlumanova, which glows blue rather than green however is not known for its brightness. I’m pleased to say that despite using bgw9, mido did apply enough layers to ensure that my ocean star glows beautifully through the night for hours. The bezel is 60 slick, very tactile, and not tall at all but somehow one can still get great purchase on it even with soaking wet hands. Even the steel used on the case and bracelet is so much more silvery in color compared to some of my seiko divers. All in all, this might be one of the biggest sleepers I’ve ever seen. I have an 8” wrist so the diameter works great for me, but I think if Mido put out a 39 or 40 mm model, it would be a instant hit. Love it! ... show more

  • This watch wears itself just put it on your wrist it'll do the rest
Color: Anthracite on Titanium
I have several automatic dive watches but this one is special. This watch has similar features to other Swiss watches in the price range but there's a special area where it really shines. It's very light and the bracelet is done so well it's so polished and beveled and comfortable you really don't know you have the watch on unless you want to know what time it is ... show more

  • Great value for a Swiss Automatic Watch
Color: Black on Stainless Steel
I am very pleased with my Ocean Star. It offers an impressive 80 hour power reserve, a clean design, and good (but not without a flaw) build quality. My watch has a bit of play in the bezel- once it clicks it has about 1/2 click of rotational play. Nothing terrible, but I hope it's an isolated issue to just my watch. I like the day-date feature and the blue lume is a nice contrast to the green found in many watches. It's held very good accuracy, it's gained a bit more than a minute over the past two months of daily wear. ... show more

  • Great watch for the price! Pretty, accurate and comfortable.
Color: Anthracite on Titanium
It is stay superbly accurate just by positioning it differently at night when I sleep. Roughly speaking, mine gain about 1-2sec overnight when laying face up and lose about 1-2 sec overnight at 12 o'clock up position. The fit and finish is excellent, the titanium makes and instant micro bracelet adjustment makes it extremely comfortable to wear. It's so comfortable I have fell asleep with it several times. Due to the more low-key dial design it's slightly more difficult to read very quickly (i.e. when driving). I was actually a bit worried about the orange bezel markings being a little odd when seeing it on screen but it actually looks good in real life. The rotating bezel is a bit gritty when purchased but after some breaking in it became smoother. Finally, I would prefer a ceramic bezel over the anodized aluminum one but that's a very minor personal preference. ... show more
