This provides a level of privacy and security for your communications, especially in crowded areas where multiple radios may be in use. Use silent operation to turn off all tone.
- NOAA Weather Scan + Alert: NOAA Weather Scan will automatically scan through 10 available weather (WX) band channels and locks onto the strongest weather channel to alert you of severe weather updates. NOAA Weather Alert will sound an alarm indicating that there is a risk of severe weather in your area. NOAA Weather Radio will also be used to broadcast AMBER alerts for missing children.

Good radio, however has a lot of plastic. So not getting good quality materials for price. Fine for use if you don't have to program it. Software does not work and computers do not recognize the radio when connected and there is an unspecified error when you try to update the firmware, without any guidance to troubleshoot or fix it. Manual is very vague.

This radio is a rock star! Durable, simple, and there's nothing a novice user could do that would cause an FCC violation (provided the user is licensed for GMRS). I'm using this as a base station with a Tram 1486 antenna which is UHF only and requires tuning/trimming. With that antenna, I talked with another station, without a repeater, and an identical setup as mine (radio, antenna, and elevation), 63 miles away. No repeater, radio to radio. I'm stocking up on radios and will be studying soon for an Amateur license. Another radio (Yaesu) for HAM is on its way, and so for that radio, I set up a Tram 1480 antenna which is dual band. Last night, I tried the 1480 antenna with the Midland MXT500. The performance was the same or better than with the Tram 1486. The standing wave ratio with the 1480 on the MXT500 repeater channels was 1.0:1 or 1.01:1. I've never had an antenna with such a low SWR. Conversely, the 1486 antenna is 1.4:1 on the repeater channels, and that's after cutting/trimming/tuning. So, I highly recommend the MXT500 as a dedicated GMRS transceiver, and the Tram 1480 antenna. Also, be sure that if you plan to use the MXT500 as a base station, that your power supply is appropriately Amp-rated. I went with the MFJ-4230MVP at Gigaparts.

It is a wonderful gmrs radio I didn't get to use mine (returned it didn't even open it I'll explain below) but I have used people who have the same Radio setup and it works great and I have seen other people who use it and put it up on YouTube I hear great things about it I know the range is great on it and if you're not into poking around and doing different things with your radio it works great for me though I have almost 100 different scan channels I want to have in my radio and I would love to listen to both channels simultaneously so I went with the Wouxun kg 1000g Plus radio, which I didn't purchase off of Amazon but I did purchase this Midland Radio from Amazon. If you're looking for a simple but very good easy to use high power Mobile gmrs Radio and the price for this radio isn't a issue for you it's a great radio and if you're not into having over 100 scan only channels and 80 or 90 different repeaters programmed or more at one time this is a perfect radio for you from using my friends same radio but I got but then returned unopened, It's a Wonderful radio it is I just wanted to be able to do more and have more features and the removable faceplate and just so much more about the kg 1000g Plus radio won me over. That said my kt1000g plus seems to be working pretty good although with the same meter and the same 50 watt dummy load I am not getting as much wattage out of my kg 1000g Plus as some other people have with the same radio same meter and same 50 watt dummy load hooked to the meter which is very disappointing the longer I hold the push to talk button the further my power on the meter drops unless I put it into low power mode it has no problem staying at five Watts transmitting no matter how long I hold the push to talk button. And also having a fan on the radio to meet seems like a good idea especially if I'm sitting and not driving and not running my vehicle and it's warm out and my radio does get pretty warm cuz it's a pretty high powered radio it's the highest Allowed by the FCC. I love that I can hear whoever is talking on repeater or gmrs channels through the speaker on the radio and through my speaker microphone the speaker on the speaker microphone I can put the back of it to my ear in the noisiest environment in my vehicle with music playing and air conditioning blasting and still here what the person talking to me is saying. That said I am not Downing this radio it's a wonderful radio it's a good radio from what I have experienced with my friends radio and what I have seen online it does get out very far with quite a good range and seems to have pretty decent audio quality. I just want to hear the radio that I can Tinker with a little bit more and could do a little bit more. If the radio I got the kg 1000 plus didn't exist or any other radio with 50 Watts and super heterodyne with the features I love on my kg1000g Plus I would have definitely ended up just keeping my Midland MXT 500. Again if you want just a everything you need except a SWR meter in one box pretty much that you can hook up and basically plug and play and works good and you don't need to listen to two different channels at once like I do from two separate speakers, and have possibly hundreds of repeaters and hundreds of scan only channels like I may have in my kg1000g Plus and if you're not that tinkering with things type of person like I am then this radio is perfect for you if you're looking for a very good 50 watt Mobile gmrs Radio

The Midland 50W GMRS is the bee's knees. You have the maximum power allowed. You have all the controls on your mic. This thing has gotten us about 25 miles simplex (with the Midland 6dB antenna) and 50+ miles on a repeater. The antenna that it ships with is a little teeny thing. I put it in my spare parts box and put on the 6dB Midland antenna. This thing SCREAMS. I had some trepidation about setting up the repeater codes without the use of CHIRP. It took a few tries, but I got it. Improvements: Midland now has a better mic, which is my next purchase. That is the major drawback of this radio out-of-the-box. The two-digit abbreviations on the display are difficult to interpret and it is non-intuitive to use. There is also a mic extension cable available, which fixes the other shortcoming... a short cord! Extremely happy with the purchase. Buy the best and cry once. This thing is a tank.
