  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Fun toy, but maybe STEM-light
I think this is a fun toy for anyone who is less interested in building and programming, and more interested in having a cool robotic arm to terrorize pets and excavate the backyard. This robotic arm kit is a good mix of metal and plastic parts giving me the impression that it will be rather durable and accept some abuse. Putting this together was rather easy - so much so that I would not classify this as a building/STEM toy like I would a motorized Erector set. It clearly fell in the class of "assembly" as the more complex parts come preassembled. Once assembled (which took about 20 minutes), the robotic arm is quite sturdy and the wheels/suspension are rather impressive. We've been playing with it on mostly flat surfaces - concrete and hardwood - but it had little trouble maneuvering in loosely packed soil. As for controlling the robot, this is probably its weakest feature. The controller is smallish and cheap feeling - kind of like a knock-off Xbox controller you'd find at a flea market. It also must be mass produced for other R/C models as it included buttons that do not seem to be applicable to this robot. The controls felt a little sloppy and laggy, but it does not really hold itself up to be a precision robot, so for me that's not really a big deal. Along with manual control, the robotic arm also allows you to "program" macros by recording a series of button presses. When executed, the robot will follow the control commands you give it. You can then record a new macro or resume manual control. This is a fun feature to "gamify" the robot as you are literally flying blind. We turned it into a competition of who could record the most accurate controls without crashing. While the robot will most usually be used with manual control. The "program" feature reminded me a lot of the popular Big Trak robot tank from when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the "program" feature isn't well documented in the instructions, so it is a bit of trial-and-error trying to figure it out. Overall, this is a fun toy which could benefit from some minor improvements, but would certainly be an exciting gift for kids who like R/C toys, building, construction, robots, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a true STEM toy, but any kid with a genuine interest in STEM subjects will enjoy this. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars English instructions are a bit vague
The written instructions were vague, but there's plenty of diagrams to work off of. It took my husband and I a couple hours and a bit of patience to get it together, but the finished product is fun. The gear for the arm does have a tendency to slip, but I think that's an error on our part and should be fixable by just taking it apart and reassembling it. Good value, definitely not for little kids though. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Tons of Fun to assemble with Jr
I will say that this is probably not best attempted with younger kids. My 6 year old loved to help and understood the assembly process, but the complexity of it and precision needed to assemble was a bit beyond his ability and comprehension. It was fun for us none the less though. However the finished product left much to be desired. Pros: -Fun and relatively easy to assemble -Parts go together easily and instructions are easy to understand -Great way to learn how certain principles work in a fun way -Everything is included! -Functionality is exciting Cons: -Theres no better way to put this but part quality is poor -Wire leads into connectors pop out and are not firm (used hot glue to rectify) -There is no stop points on servos and inadvertently holding down longer will break joints/servos -Communication issues from controller to onboard receiver lagg and wheel input lags All in all the end project is cool, but hardly something you could use much due to its fragility and lower end quality. However the real fun lies in the building of it and the learning aspect of things. For that it gets a solid 4 stars as it bonded my son and I for many hours slowly assembling this and reviewing how each thing worked and went together. If the kit had better quality parts and stop points it would easily get 5+ starts in my book- ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Neat kit for a teen interested in robotics
The kit was fairly easy to assemble, even for a 13 year old. My nephew was able to get it together quickly and he immediately tried to do some spy missions around the house with it. This isn't a super high class robot, it is a simple claw or shovel, and his imagination provided the rest of the fun. The remote control worked through some thin walls so he was happy. Overall, the kit may have been a little too easy to put together but he still had fun. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect project for my grandsons
I ordered this to have at our home when my almost 10 and almost 8 year old grandsons come to spend time with us. This is just the kind of activity they both both love. Once they visit and have a chance to work on this, I will update.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Fun project to build
My 10-year old nephew and I built this together in one afternoon. The major assemblies (claw, gearbox) came mostly pre-built so really not a difficult project to complete for any child that is motivated to do so. The finished product isn't the sturdiest vehicle but it's actually fun to use and certainly brings a sense of accomplishment the first time you send it on a mission to try and retrieve a toy from the other side of the room or just to wave hello to the cat :) ... show more
