Description

Sometimes called a beatbox or box drum, this cajon is the wooden acoustic percussion instrument you sit down on and play with your hands (it's pronounced "kah-hone"). The Meinl Percussion Snare Cajon with bag bundle is made in Europe with 100% Baltic birch for full, resonant bass notes and crisp slap tones. Baltic birch is special because of its naturally “EQ’d” tone with punchy low notes, balanced highs and great projection. This wood species is also used extensively in high-end drum set construction for this same reason. To get its super-crisp slap sound, inside are two sets of coiled steel snare wires fitted against the playing surface. These are the same type of snares found on snare drums. The frontplate (or playing surface) responds well to finger rolls as well as corner slaps and bass hits with your hands, giving you optimal dynamic control. When played toward the center, the resonating body accompanies the playing surface by broadening your bass notes to achieve a deep and punchy sound, reacting much like a kick drum. You’ll find a sound port on the rear side that helps develop bass tone and is a perfect spot for microphone placement. Non-slip silicone feet allow the body to resonate to its fullest while providing stability. This instrument is ideal for acoustic gigs when a full drum kit cannot be used, and it comes with the Meinl Standard Cajon Bag for easy travel. The exterior 600 denier synthetic fabric is extraordinarily durable for the heaviest of road use. It’s designed for water, stain and abrasion resistance with a good degree of thickness and a PVC backing to give the bag more structure. Inside the bag is a lighter 210 denier synthetic fabric that delivers excellent protection while being exceptionally durable for heavy use (has 3 mm padding) — PU coating makes the interior more durable, water-resistant and flexible. Designed in Germany, Meinl is a family- owned musical instrument manufacturing business that was established in Germany in 1951. Our expert German designers have deep relationships with our builders to ensure you're delivered the absolute finest quality.

  • Pretty good instrument, solid.
Color: Natural/Wine Red Style: With Bag
It's pretty durable, it comes with a case, the only real problem is that the snare will sound with the bass part but that's to be expected with a snare type cajon.

  • Love it - snare or base beats are easy as 1-2-3
Color: Natural/Wine Red Style: With Bag
I had never used a cajon when I ordered this one, but I'm a believer now. This is a very inexpensive and easy option to add some percussion to your playing. I have seem some use a base drum pedal setup with a cajon, but I just slap it - or have someone else slap it to get the needed percussive sounds. Quality construction, easy to use, no setup, very simple. Sounds good and is priced right. Overall, I am glad to have ordered it and can recommend it to others. Comes with a nice storage/carry bag. Looks nice. ... show more

  • Good if you are OK with not having adjustable snares
Color: Natural/Wine Red Style: With Bag
I previously owned a German Schlagwerk cajon and when I donated it to our church, I found myself looking for an inexpensive instrument to replace it for my home. I tried 3 of the Amazon cajons that were under $130 and had received decent reviews: Meinl Cajon Box Drum with Internal Snares and FREE Bag (BC1NTWR), Sawtooth ST-CJ120B Cajon Birch Wood with Padded Seat Cushion and Carry Bag, and PylePRO PCJD18 String Cajon - Wooden Percussion Box, with Internal Guitar Strings, Full Size. The Meinl has drum snares inside that are not removable (unlike my Schlagwerk) or adjustable. Sadly, this was a deal breaker for me as there was no way to adjust the snare sound. The cajon was well built and had a good carry bag. The Sawtooth was by far the least expensive and also came with a carry bag and a pad for the seat. The pad was ridiculously thin and hard - and provided little if any cushion. The bag was a nice accessory and the cajon was well built. The bass on the cajon was not as deep and the snares were not as crisp as on the Pyle. The faceplate was thicker/heavier and affected the range of sound that I could get out of the instrument. I did turn the screws that adjust the internal guitar strings, but they didn’t make a huge amount of improvement to the richness of the bass & snares. The PylePRO is my personal favorite based on sound. To be honest, the build quality is a bit less than the other cajons (edge above the faceplate could use better sanding) and it didn’t come with a carrying bag, but to me, the sound more closely emulates that of a drumset bass, snare and toms. The image on Amazon has recently changed and it now says “BlueBerry” on the drum face instead of PylePro - I’m glad I bought it when I did :-) ... show more

  • Just ok

Looks very nice but I wish there was more snare in it. The snare is very subtle, I’ve heard better

  • Very nice Cajon especially at this price... see my added Update
Color: Natural/Wine Red Style: With Bag
As you can see from the photos, this is not an under sized cajon. I am 6-1, 195 and find it comfortable. The only Con I can find with this cajon is the snare is noticeable when striking bass note. Of course you cannot expect a $100 cajon(that comes with a $30 or more case) to have the separation and tonal abilities of a $300 cajon. I did find that I needed to adjust the corners, even though Meinl says ready to play no adjustment needed, to suit my tastes. Now for the Pros: Cajon is well constructed, nice rounded edges, rubber feet on bottom, sounds very good, good bass volume(the snare on bass note is not that noticeable to those listening I am told) and includes a really nice case. I find no reason to not to recommend this cajon. Even if the case were not included it outclasses anything near it's price. Look at the finish and the interior construction (visible through the rear port/sound/mike hole) in the photos I have included and I think you will purchase this cajon. Also the case as I said is really nice with nylon web straps for handles, a HD nylon zipper with metal lockable loop, cordura-like woven nylon outer for durability, thin but dense foam padding, and a less abrasive but tough nylon inner lining. Update: I was asked a question and did not reply in time. The question "are the snares adjustable"; No, there are no adjustments for the snares. There are two snares attached inside the cajon. The only adjustment without modifying the cajon is to slightly loosen the top tree screws on the cabinet front corners which will make the snare sound more apparent. For the money I think you will be hard pressed to find a better sounding cajon. No cajon in this price range has adjustable snares that I know of. I Have had many comments on the sound quality of this cajon and it has held up well through many, many sessions. ... show more

  • Gift for Budding Musician
Color: Natural/Wine Red Style: With Bag
This was a Christmas gift for my 12-year-old daughter, who has just begun playing instruments with a beginning youth band at our church. Although she has access to a cajon at the band room, having her own instrument with which to be able to practice at home, and to take ownership of in its transport and care will add to the value of her learning and playing experience as a growing musician. Since the cajon has come into the house, the whole family has had the opportunity to try it out, and I have no doubt that it will continue to be played by everyone. It has lots of variety in its sound and, as others have mentioned here, a beautiful look. There is no assembly required, but there is also no instruction booklet as to how to begin using it (for folks who like that sort of reference tool). Online resources, largely videos, are available as a beginning. Was very pleased with the price and delivery time/packaging. In the interest of full disclosure, after delivery of the cajon, Meinl presented an offer for a free shaker to use with the cajon for a verified purchase review of this product. We couldn't be happier with the product. The shaker with the cajon only adds to my daughter's experience--definitely worth it! ... show more
