I chose this present because of what it showed was included. I had to find one quickly & ended up choosing this because I didn’t realize the reviews show this is falsely advertised. Now I am reading the seeds don’t even germinate. I may exchange this present before he tries it & is disappointed.

    • No Trees As Of Yet
I am really into my plants and gardening right now. I thought adding some bonsai trees to the mix would be fun. The set had minimal instructions but enough to get you through setting up the soil and planting the seeds. I have plenty of indoor lights from my other plants so when the instructions said to plant them inside and with the grow lights I knew that wouldn't be an issue. I only watered the soil as much as instructed and after almost a month the seeds still haven't grown. So while I do like this set and what it could have been not a single one of my planted seeds has sprouted. For this reason I would not recommend this set.     • Some hits, some misses
I wanted to give this one as much time as possible to make my review as fair as possible, since the seeds won't all grow at the same pace. I'll get the good out of the way fast. I like the wood box, it makes for a nice way to keep the pots together while you are growing them. The acacia has been rigorously growing, I'd say something like 80% of the acacia seeds sprouted (for better or for worse). Obviously you won't want to grow 30 or so acacia bonsais, and I already have some acacia bonsais, but this is a good growth rate. The black pine took longer to start, but I have about 10 or so growing now. The instructions on each package are more thorough than the instructions on this page. The judas seeds need a lot more time than the acacia seeds. Now for the bad. The maple, wisteria, and judas seeds have had 0 growth after a month of growing. Same growing conditions as the other seedlings. The judas seeds have grown a green mold on them, which I think is not a good sign. Nonetheless, I will keep watering the seeds for another 1-2 months to see if any of these three have a very slow germination rate. There are no bags. You're given pots. More pots than can fit in the wooden box, and they are a tight fit. If you like the presentation of the jute bags, you won't get that. No instruction guide. The only guide was the seed packets. Overall, I think that this is a bit of a mixed bag. You don't get everything that it says it has, and some of the seeds are more rigorous than others. Give the time period of 4-8 weeks, I still have a little under a month to go to determine if I will have more than black pine and acacia seedlings. ... show more

The kit comes with everything you need to start. There are directions on the box and individual seed packs. If this works im going to be really excited. Will keep you up to date on progress, soaking them today per individual instructions as the steps progress and I get results will post updates.

    • All That Is Needed To Start Some Bonsai Trees
This is a neat Bonsai tree kit. It is functional and comes with everything needed to grow a couple of trees. It takes only minutes to set up and is mess-free. The outer wooden box is a nice touch, and the five inner bags work well for separating the different trees for which seeds are provided. All the trees germinated, but two succumbed quickly to molds that grew with the trees. The other three are still hanging in there and slowly growing two months later. The directions included are fine for planting the trees but provide little guidance on how to train and care for the trees once they are growing, much less any information on bonsai. These topics, though, can be looked up on the web or in several fine books on the subject. The product description is accurate. The kit arrived in two days without any issues.
