  • Essential for my total hip replacement re-hab
Style: durable pvc plastic
I am 6' 5" tall, 285 lbs. This walker was essential to my hip replacement re-hab and I would recommend it for any of the bigger folks out there. It's extra width is both a plus and a minus, more on that below, so make sure you understand that when you get it. Background I bought this walker based on measurements. I wasn't sure I'd fit in a standard size and was pretty sure this one would work. After I received it and set it up, I began practicing using it around the house. Though it fit me perfectly and is quite sturdy, taking my full weight, it was quickly apparent that it would have trouble with some of my doors and some of the toilet closets themselves. Though I could find ways to navigate the doors (side ways, etc.) I decided to talk with the doctor about adding a pair of crutches to my arsenal - walker for walking and crutches for in and out of the bathroom. My doctor wasn't keen on crutches but said OK to writing me a script. As luck would have it, the hospital had a standard size walker which I tried and found I fit in making it workable. In the end I decided to go with the second, standard size walker instead of crutches for in and out of the bathroom. Details If you are in a similar situation, I would absolutely recommend getting both this larger walker for general walking and a standard size one for getting in and out of tighter spaces like the bathroom. - Even though you can "walk" around after surgery, you're so unstable that a walker is really the only way to go. For me it was weeks before I could use a cane and I'm grateful I didn't try the crutches but had a second walker for going to the bathroom. - The bigger walker is much better for taller folks. The extra width of the base clearly enhances the stability. There a few times when I worried about tipping over with the standard size walker. - Width wise, I just fit within the standard walker which meant, when I would step into it, my knuckles would sometimes scrape against my incision. Ouch. This is one reason why I wouldn't want to use it all the time. - In the week(s) following surgery, you are far more unstable then you expect. Going sideways through doors, angling and twisting, is more challenging then you anticipate. This makes the standard walker much nicer because you can go through doors straight on. When you're doing better, not a big deal, but in the early days the convenience is worth the price of getting two walkers. - For guys, the walker will go right over the toilet so you can step directly up to it to pee. The toilet closet in our bedroom bath, has both a slim door opening and a thin footprint. The larger walker doesn't fit on both accounts. Being able to walk straight in and pee when you're hurting and unstable was, once again, worth the price of getting two walkers. The walker did develop a bit of a twist. I think this is probably from using one side to leverage myself up from the bed or a chair. When putting equal weight on both sides it would go away and not be noticeable. Lastly the manufacture of the walker is Guardian which is the same as the standard size I got from the hospital. Nice to know this is the same walker used by hospitals. Summary In summary, if you're a bigger person and your walking environment can handle the width, this is a great walker and a no brainer. If you can only have one, the bigger one is the way to go. If you can afford two walkers (I bought one and insurance got the other) and you can still fit within a standard size walker and you've got small doorways and water closets, absolutely get two. You won't need them for too long but, while you do need them, convenience and ease of use is king. ... show more
