  • I had a lot of trouble with poor supply and inability to let down for the pump ...
I'm a working mom who pumped for a year with my last child, and is back to work now with a 6 week old at home. I pump 2-3 times at work, plus 1-2 times at home, in addition to breast feeding at night and on weekends. With my first child, I had a lot of trouble with poor supply and inability to let down for the pump or my baby at first, but with a lot of work, was producing enough to stop supplementing at 6 weeks, and then enough for twins by 3 months. This time my supply has been abundant. I use my pumps on high settings as that shortens my pumping time, and my nipples are able to tolerate it. Pumping does not feel like breast feeding, and once I had accepted that, I stopped looking for a setting that felt good, and instead focused on comfortable enough and efficient. Not everyone is able to tolerate that, so my preferences may not be for everyone. I use a hands free bra, and usually pump 10-12 minutes (past second let down and stop when completely dry). I've used an Ameda provided by my insurance during first pregnancy (worthless), and older model Medela PIS with all mechanical parts and only single mode rhythm, a Medela Freestyle, a Medela Symphony, and now this Sonata. I also use a Haakaa pump at night as DD only nurses one side each feeding, and I don't want to have to get up and pump after feeding her. My favorite pump is the older PIS. Without the let down mode, I do get a bit of a jolt the first pull on the nipples, but it is incredibly reliable, has very strong suction, and I get better volumes with that than even the Symphony. However, it is no longer made, a bit awkward to lug around, and has the tendency to suck milk into the tubing which I replace regularly. I got mine used with baby #1, and will keep it until I know that I will never need a pump again. The Sonata is my second favorite. I can get the same volumes as the PIS, but it took me figuring out that I had to switch the rhythm over to the second rhythm, and takes about 2 minutes longer. I'm currently using power level 7 with it. It is a bit gentler than the PIS in terms of nipple sensation. Here's what I love: Portability! I travel for work, and being able to pump in the car or on the plane with a built in battery is huge. Also, just being able to walk around the house with it is amazing. It does require a hand to hold the pump (not like the Freestyle) and is a bit awkward to hold. It equally the PIS in production. This is huge. It is quieter than most other pumps (but not anywhere near silent). The new design for the collectors makes this essentially a closed system. No more milk in the tubes. Here's what needs improvement: It has a computer and is single user, but there is no way to program in a setting. This seems a bit ridiculous in 2018. Its not hard to change from the default setting, but why should I have to do that every single time? They used a different size tubing, so there is no way to chose to use your milk collectors from prior Medela pumps without jerry rigging with 3rd party parts. Since no one makes parts for the Sonata except Medela, and things are not sold separately, it can be very expensive to have back ups or multiple sets, which is essential for anyone who pumps regularly. There is no way to buy a the accessory set with anything but at 24mm flange. Those of us with normal size nipples who need a bigger one then have to spent more to buy the correct size, and throw out the useless ones with the set. There are unnecessary beeps. Why add noises when you advertise that the pump is "very quiet." I am very concerned about the reliability reports in other reviews, and the obvious planned obsolescence given that the manual states the pump is designed to work for 12 months using only 3 times a day. Who pumps only 3 times a day? UPDATE : The unit suddenly stopped working entirely in the middle of one of my pumping sessions at work when the pump was 2 months old. No warning signs. Customer service was great and got me a new pump via UPS the next day. The new one has required a hard reset once, but has been working for about 3 weeks without failure. I've taken 1 star away for reliability, and just purchased a Spectra S1 to travel with, since i need a reliable pump when I'm not near my back up PIS. ... show more

  • Most comfortable pump, portable version of medela symphony
I never thought of writing a review but this is too good not to share. I’ve used Medela Symphony at the hospital and Love it. I have my own spectra but was horrified to find that it causes me so much pain when I pump despite many mums saying that it’s very comfortable. (I have the correct flange size and troubleshoot everything.) I also rented freestyle and Pisa to try, those also have very painful suction and because of the pain , I don’t produce as much as I did when I used the symphony. On the verge of giving up my exclusive pumping journey which has been only 2 months, I decided to give it the last shot and bought sonata that has mixed reviews. Some people on here said it’s close to symphony which was a good enough reason for me buy it. This is more than true, I even find that the performance is almost as good as the symphony! ( maybe just need to pump 5 mins longer to empty ). It’s so comfortable that for the first time ever , I fell asleep pumping and woke up to find bottle filled with milk that I usually have to do compression and keep squeezing to get that amount with spectra. Pump parts are also easier to clean. I wish I hadn’t spent money on other pumps and bought this straight away. Worth the money. Saved my pumping journey ! ... show more

  • It has some pretty awesome features
It has some pretty awesome features: design, portable, smart. It is small and lightweight and looks better than the PISA. It is also very quiet. (Yes, even quieter than my Spectra S1) I like that it connects to the MyMedela app to keep track of pumping sessions which I think would come in really handy during the first few weeks after birth. The battery only lasts about 3-4 pumps, much less than the Spectra. The handle isn't really a handle so it's awkward to carry while pumping. As other reviews have noted, there is a "kickback" issue where the milk pushes back towards your nipple before going down the flange and into the bottle. It isn't really a problem, but kind of a weird sensation. The pump parts are also much heavier and more awkward to handle. It's hard for hands free bras to hold them in place, especially if you also pump a lot of milk at once. I don't like that the pump was made to work with only these new parts so I can't use any of my old flanges which makes it even more expensive to buy all new accessories to have extras. Extra parts are essential for an exclusive pumper. Which brings me to my HACK for this pump: I had already hacked my Spectra S1 to use my Medela accessories so I had these "long stem backflow protectors" that I found here on Amazon. I cut the yellow pieces off the ends of the Medela tubing and connected the tubing to these backflow protectors and now I'm able to use all of my old flanges instead of these new ones. It also keeps the pump a closed system for hygienic purposes. This eliminates a lot of my problems with this pump. I just wish I didn't have to hack such an expensive machine! I bought this pump as my last new toy for my pumping journey. I have been pumping for almost two years now with my second (and last!) baby. I'm an oversupplier and I donate my excess milk to a preemie milk bank. If I had it all to over again, yeah I would probably buy it again. It is at least better than the PISA, but not as good as the Spectra, in my opinion. The only thing better than the Spectra is the size. Spectra is a monster compared to this thing. ... show more
