  • Makes great kindling
Don't know if you're like me when you see some of these devices and envision them being much larger, but when I got it out of the box, my dreams of splitting my 14" logs quickly faded. Looks like I'll need that powered log splitter after all. Sure, the picture with the gloves and glasses give it scale, but maybe it was wishful dreaming. However, even with that little, tiny hammer, this bad boy really does the trick on smaller branches and sticks to make some awesome kindling. I have a bunch of pickets and stakes that split nicely and make for great fire starters. I put some not quite dry scrub oak "logs" (probably about 5" in diameter), and it kinda did the trick, but not cleanly. I imagine if I wait and that hard wood really dries out, it will perform better. Not a big surprise, but the whole thing is painted nicely in black, but after a few of those oak logs, the black paint has already chipped away at the edge of the cutter. I'm sure that will quickly rust, so I'll have to keep my eye on it and sharpen, hopefully not often. The hammer surprisingly packs enough punch for the sticks and logs that are properly sized for this tool. the glasses are a nice touch, and for flying wood splinters could definitely come in handy. I liked that they supplied four good solid screws so I could mount this to a stump so it would be sturdy. Recommend this for the small stuff. Quick and handy. Probably made for those pieces that are too small for an ax or chain saw. For the price, add it to you tool set. ... show more

  • Good for small jobs
The media could not be loaded. It’s quite a sturdy piece but watch where you place it , for it to be sturdy. Make sure you use smaller logs because big ones don’t fit and a heavier sledge hammer would be better.

  • Solid piece of equipment
I have been using a hatchet on the pavers in front of my brick pizza oven to split kindling to start the fires. Turns out that was not necessarily safe, but also damaging to my pavers if the log splits to easily and the hatchet hits the pavers. So this wood splitter was really necessary for me. I unboxed the splitters and was happy to see everything I needed. The splitter, small sledge hammer, safety glasses, gloves, and screws to mount the splitter. I mounted the splitter to an 18 inch tall section of log. The screws held well and the whole thing can be carried around by just grabbing the top ring of the splitter. Splitting the wood is pretty simple. Place the wood on the splitter blade and start tapping down on the top of the wood til it splits. I quickly filled a 5 gallon plastic barrel in about 3 minutes. Starting the fires to make pizza is much quicker and safer now. Overall the splitter feels like a very high quality unit. The welds look good and I expect to many decades of use from it. ... show more

  • STOP By Before You Buy
* The 'sharp' edge is not really sharp but enough to split logs. It is safe in the sense that you won't easily cut yourself but may need for blunt force when splitting a log * Diameter of the ring is barely 7", so logs from more mature trees may not fit * Depth of the splitter is only a little over a foot, so that's another limitation to this * If you're not bolting this to a fixed position, care must be taken when splitting a log as this tends to move after every hit * The mallet head that comes with this is only 2.2lbs (with a ~12" handle), which is enough to split logs of close dimensions to the splitter. However, more blows may be required. I think it would have been better to have a 3lb mallet head with a 2' handle, though this may defeat the purpose of being portable ... show more

  • Works
The media could not be loaded. I’ve been wanting one of these to make splitting firewood for the fire pit easier. It functions as expected and includes a small hammer and safety glasses if you don’t have them. This is definitely safer than using an axe and I don’t have to worry about my 13 year old doing the splitting. For larger pieces of wood, I plan on using a larger sledgehammer to make the process go faster. ... show more

  • Excellent option for the younger kids to help make firewood
My youngest two sons always want to help split firewood, but at 8 and 5 years old, they are not quite ready to handle the splitting axe. This was a perfect option to allow them to more safely split wood and be just like their older brother and dad. While they were the target audience, I have had fun making kindling with it as well. The wood splits easy and allows me to safely split a piece over and over to get very small kindling to make starting fires a breeze. Setup was a breeze. I picked a round cut log slightly larger than the base and used the provided 4 screws to secure the splitter to the log. I will admit we did not use the gloves and safety glasses, but the included hammer is enough to get the job done, even for the younger kids. I expected to use a larger 4lb hammer, but honestly, the one included has done all we needed. Whether for use by children (supervised) or adults, this has been a nice option for splitting wood that I would recommend to anyone debating this purchase. ... show more

  • Fantastic idea!
This has made Making kindling SO much easier and So much Less Dangerous!! Now I can ask my 8 year old to cut some up without him having to use a hatchet! Great tool, only a smaller sized round can fit, so you don’t completely get away from splitting wood, but it sure helps!!
