It came compressed and expanded nicely and quickly. It is thick and heavy. The outer cover is thick corduroy. It is comfortable for sitting. Sleeping was not as comfortable due to the deep indentations. Will have to purchase an additional thick mattress cover to even out the surface area for sleeping. I did Not detect any smells. It was actually as thick as stated and is almost too thick for the metal futon base. Overall good quality and thick. Color is a darker shade of gray.

It's always taking a risk buying things online but this did not disappoint. It's so soft and cushy and exactly as pictured. No smells, came in a nice, smaller than expected, size box and it was easy to get upstairs and unpack. I ordered the full and when first unpacked it will measure more like 50/51inch but once it settles and you sit on it. it ends up stretching out to the 54inches wide. 80inch in length as advertised. I ordered a futon chair frame for it and will update with a picture once I put it all together. Great and beautiful solution for an extra bedroom/temp guest bed...etc.
