Style: 30" Smoker
I have had this smoker for a month. I had one minor mishap with the control panel but that was fixed promptly. I love this smoker I live in an apartment and I am able to have and use this on my porch. Great buy although if you get the slow smoker unit you will know it's a great buy. This is an awesome smoker. I have used it at least 4 times a week. It's an outdoor oven. It doesn't bake a cake but damn near everything else low and slow is the key here. o man smoked lasagna made with smoked cheese you will never go back. Did you say cream cheese ya smoke that too with some curry paste or just seasoning salt maybe a Hershey bar the last 20 min on a cold smoke below 100 degrees or the last 05 min on a hot smoke. Crazy but trust me Graham crackers are your friend with this dish sweet or salty. Get this unit. ... show more

  • Decent smoker for the price
Style: 30" Smoker
First, this smoker came assembled except for the feet and temperature control. Both easily attached. It's a good size for a family. I have two complaints. First, it's very hard to see and set the time and temperature. There's a lot of glare on the controller, especially in full light. Second, I didn't get much smoke at all. It could be that the chip holder wasn't really in contact with the element. When I cleaned it after the first use, I slid in the chip holder before putting the drip pan under it. Maybe that will help. On the positive side, the ribs I moade were delicious! Next I'll do a chicken, then a pork butt. I'm saving the brisket until I'm more comfortable using it. Expensive, but worth it if it turns out. On another subject, I ordered the leg extension kit. The instructions are horrible! I still haven't attached them yet. But I'm determined. I do recommend this smoker. Just a few kinks to work out. ... show more

  • Hard to get the temp right
Style: 30" Smoker
You'd think this would act like an oven, just set the temp and and let it go, but in practice that doesn't seem to be the case. I had read some tips that said you should run it empty for 3 hours at 275 (the highest temp you can set) to burn off all the "new appliance smells". And that seemed to be necessary as it was billowing smoke despite there being nothing but the metal parts inside and there was definitely a smell that would be familiar to anyone that's bought a new toaster or air fryer and heated it up for the first time. Here's the thing, even though it was set to 275 (with the vent open) it very quickly heated to 332, had to bring it down to 250 for it to get back under 275. Today I used it for the first time to make ribs and had a very hard time getting it up to temp. Setting it to 225 I couldn't get it over 200, but if I set it to 250 it seemed to have no problem getting the temp up. Feels like 250 is the magic number, anything else is inconsistent. ... show more

  • The unit works great until it stops burning the wood chips
Style: 30" Smoker
I bought this in September of 2022, and have used it 2 or 3 times a month since, but then my wood chips stopped catching fire, and no smoke and only the chips on the bottom of the pan would turn black but none of the rest would burn. I have written to Masterbuilt Customer Service , let's see what they say. ... show more

  • For a nubie ,leg quarters and ribs came out great.
Style: 30" Smoker
I love the simplicity of the smoker. The digitals don’t work exactly right, to me that was no big deal. A little common sense and you can turn out some great food.

  • A simple, solid smoker that does the job
Style: 30" Smoker
I have purchased this smoker twice. The first one ran great for 3 years, but finally the heating element burned out. It's now in my garage awaiting warm weather so I can install the replacement element that I ordered online and will serve as a backup when the heating element burns out in my current smoker. The elements will burn out after a time, particularly when you use a smoker as often as I do (3 or 4 times a week year-round). Unboxing and doing the minor assembly required for this smoker is quick and easy. It took me less than 30 minutes. Spending more on an electric smoker with a window is a waste, in my view, because the glass quickly gets fogged with steam and smoke residue. Besides, you should be cooking to internal temperature with a good remote temperature probe instead of opening the door periodically (letting heat and smoke escape) to check on progress. Speaking of not opening the door while cooking, I'm a huge fan of this smoker's external smokewood loading feature that allows you to add wood without opening the door. Pre-heating the smoker is important in cold weather. Up to a 30 minutes may be necessary. Pre-heating is not so necessary during the warm/hot spring/summer/fall months if the outside temperature is above 60̊ F. In fact, there is a good reason to skip pre-heating entirely on really warm days (over 80̊ F.), as explained in the next paragraph. Of course, the Masterbuilt electric smokers rely on a electric heating element for heat. The element automatically turns off when the smoker reaches the target temperature you set. It then turns back on when the temperature in the cabinet drops several degrees below the target temperature. While the Masterbuilt smokers are pretty well insulated, they are affected by the outdoor temperature. You will find that the element stays on much longer during colder weather, so there is hardly ever a problem getting enough smoke in such weather. However, particularly when the outdoor temperature is over 80̊ F. or so, the element will not stay on as much, which can decrease the smoke production. I have two approaches to this problem: (1) In hot weather, I never pre-heat the smoker. I just put the meat in the smoker and start it "cold." This maximizes the initial smoke until the smoker gets to the target temperature, which can takes as little as 10 minutes in really hot weather if you're cooking at, say, 225̊. (2) Every once in a while if not enough smoke is being produced, I open the door for 30 to 60 seconds and let the temperature in the cabinet come down, forcing the heating element to come back on. This hardly ever results in extended cooking time because the temperature recovers pretty quickly, and if not enough smoke is being produced anyway, you're not letting out a lot of smoke. A lot of my meat smoking projects are under 3-4 hours, and I always use the Masterbuilt for those. I'm only tempted to fire up my Weber bullet charcoal smoker for longer smokes such as ribs and brisket. Tips for easier cleanup: Line the bottom tray of the smoker with foil and be sure to poke a hole in the foil to match the hole in the tray. Also, foil the water pan before every use of the smoker, which makes it super easy to clean. Try it just once without foil, and you'll be a dedicated water-pan-foiler thereafter! Also, get a protective heat-resistant mat to go under the smoker and protect your patio or deck because there will be occasional spills of grease no matter how careful you are. The photo shows my smoker in operation on Christmas Day 2020 -- doing a twice-smoked ham. If you look closely, you can see the clean smoke coming out the vent on the top right of the smoker. ... show more

  • Good smoker, but . . .
Style: 30" Smoker
I bought this smoker to replace a Masterbuilt smoker that I'd used for ten years. It performs fine, runs a little hot, but I can get used to that. The display is very hard to read in any light, which is a problem. Biggest issue is that it doesn't have wheels, unlike the smoker it replaced. It's a bulky appliance, it has to be "walked" out my garage door to use, unlike the old one which had wheels and a handle. If you buy one, be sure to get one with wheels unless you can leave this in one place. ... show more
