I know these are pretty easy to defeat, but they're inexpensive and convenient. I own about a dozen of them, and have NEVER had a problem with them resetting unexpectedly, "auto-locking" or otherwise causing issues as others have described. We keep one on our side-gate of our house, and yes, it needs to be lubricated occasionally to remain smooth, even in mostly-dry Southern California. But the three-number combo is simple and quick for our gardener and pool guy to utilize, and the lock is enough to discourage "opportunity" criminals from easily checking out our backyard. Just use them for an appropriate application. These will totally stymie toddlers, and all but the most undisciplined-but-determined little kids, for example for cabinets of paint/chemicals or ammunition storage. Will be completely ineffective against a patient kid (only 1000 combinations) or clever kid (read on the internet how to pick these), certainly not a teenager. People who hate these locks are simply not using them appropriately. ... show more

I bought this lock back in 2018, and for several years, it worked reliably and served its purpose well. It was a dependable solution for securing my belongings at the gym and offered peace of mind without any hassle. Unfortunately, just yesterday, it stopped working – despite using the correct code, it wouldn’t open. I ultimately had to ask the gym staff to help break it, which was disappointing. However, considering it lasted for several years without issues, I can't complain too much. For the price and the years of service it provided, it’s been a decent product. This lock broke after only a few uses within 1 week. I used it on a toolbox kept in the back of my suv. So it was not put through any strenuous or jumbled situation. Lock worked the first few days (would open it in the morning, close/lock it at end of day. The code somehow reset and I could not reopen it. Had to break part of my toolbox to get it off. Not the beefiest lock made by Master Lock, but by far an easy lock to use. As many of the reviews say, this lock is not a luggage lock, or not sized for the majority of suitcase made holes for locks on the zippers/compartments. I like the ability to change the code and the simplicity in which to do so - just make sure you try the lock off of what you are locking first to make sure you have the right combination. I set the lock but apparently failed to verify the numbers were aligned to what I was setting the lock to an viola a worthless lock. Fortunately I had all the time in the world and after tinkering with the lock it opened up and allowed me to reset the combination to the correct set of numbers. As some of the other reviewers have stated, if you push down on the lock while it is at a right angle and move the numbers, you'll change the code, so try it before putting it on. ... show more

Ideal lock for specific purposes... I've been using these locks for over 20 years. I also have the four number version, but for specific purposes, I like this one better. I have NEVER had one of these locks work loose or not unlock for me. This lock is best when used for low security applications and applications that require "evidence of tampering." I used it mostly for garden sheds, especially those with "wimpy" plastic hasp and easily pried open doors. There is no keys to lose or to look after. Be careful and remember the position of the detent that is used to set the combination. If you accidently depress the shackle in the open position into the detent and move the numbers, you will accidently close the lock on a new unknown combination. If you do this on a four number combination lock, if would be more difficult to retrieve the actual combination. That's why I prefer the three number combination lock for low security applications. The first time it happened to me, I went through the 1,000 or so possible combinations. It took about an hour. Now, I have found that if it locks on an accidently set combination, I just try numbers close to my originally set combination. Retrieving the combination takes 10 minutes or so. I have the original brass body ones. The combination changing detent is located 180 degrees from the locking position of the shackle. On the newer aluminum body version, Master lock has redesigned it to be at the 90 degrees position, realizing that the lock is usually opened to the 180 degrees position and more readily accidently set. Basically, for a specific purpose, I LOVE this lock. They work and last almost forever. ... show more

I bought this lock because I had a same one before for the gym. That was a way better quality. Way better. This particular one seem to be poorly made. Maybe different seller or batch but it gave me so much trouble. After I programmed it and used it for about a month, once I opened I could not turn it back to normal and lock it. I really thought I will have to buy a new one again. It gave me trouble 3 other times besides that. Once you open it and turn the ear, it can stay like that. You cannot turn it back to the original position to lock. No matter what I did with the numbers or the ear, it did not move. I threw it away.
