Description

Wanda and Peter Parker embrace great responsibility in the next adventure of an epic multiversal series that reimagines iconic Marvel origin stories. So many worlds, so little time. Infinite possibilities, creating infinite realities. Long have I watched death court the Scarlet Witch. But . . . what if Wanda didn’t have to suffer her grief alone? All Wanda has ever known is her friendly little neighborhood in Queens. As an infant, after her parents died, she was adopted into a family where her doting Aunt May and Uncle Ben would always be at the breakfast table. One that includes her idiot brother, Peter Parker, who thinks hiding a spider bite, joining a secret fight club, and becoming a super hero are somehow good ideas. When Wanda’s own powers emerge, blood, chaos, and suspicion follow in their wake. But as she learns to harness her power under the guidance of Doctor Strange, Peter is standing beside her in the Sanctum Sanctorum. And as they try to protect New York City, the Parker siblings learn that with great powers, there must also come great responsibilities—and greater losses. Reeling from tragedy, Wanda finds herself truly alone for the first time in her life. Peter is lost to his own grief, and so she must forge ahead on her own. But on her first solo outing, she runs into a mysterious speedster—a man named Pietro. And everything she has ever known shatters like glass. Faced with unbelievable truths, Wanda is forced to choose between the life she knows and the life she could have. Read more

  • An Action Packed Emotional Rollercoaster! Spidey & Wanda are an Amazing Team
Format: Hardcover
Slight Spoilers! Did I like this book? I absolutely loved it. After experiencing so much disappointment from 616 comic characterization of Spider-Man and seeing that universe slip further into the gutter (Scarlet Witch series being the only exception), it was so refreshing getting a fresh, new, but familiar take of Peter Spidey and at the same a phenomenal take on #Wanda. If you are looking for a new universe to jump into and a fresh start, this is the book for you. One thing that impressed me with this story and I give Seanan major props, is that it told a new take on these characters without sacrificing major events and familiar scenarios that happen in their origins. It's like Amazing Fantasy/Parker backstory and Scarlet Witch's origins crossing over and the way it is done is believable & masterfully done. Because there have been some takes on Spidey and Wanda that as we have seen take major liberties and alter how they get their powers. Here it still plays out except they are together. The story & plot is engaging. It's not slow paced and even the quiet little moments flow naturally and keep things moving. A lot of characters appear in this story, some I didn't expect. Some are name dropped and others especially Strange & Chavez have big roles. But the heart of this story is definitely the beautiful realistic relationship between Peter Parker & #Wanda Maximoff. The way Seanan portrays their friendship from when they are little children to teenagers to 20's is so human and real it is like a breath of fresh air reading it. I knew they would be amazing as a duo after reading their teamups in the comics and seeing how they had a bro/sis dynamic, and here it is on full display and taken up a notch. There are moments where they are funny and entertaining, moments they want to bite each other's head off, and then the moments where emotions run high and they display how much they care & love each other and those moments especially can have you practically in tears. Peter & Wanda together really have a way of shattering your heart especially when tragedy hits. They are brilliant together and I live their sibling dynamic. The action is well done and I really love how Seanan describes Wanda when she uses her chaos magic. The descriptions are poetically detailed and give you insight on how Wanda is feeling when she is about to break loose that chaos. Spidey is in top form here and is himself. You aren't getting little cry baby begging Norman for a suit because the big bad Vulture is trying to kill him. And thankfully no getting cucked (there's still tragedy but no cuck). Also I love how Seanan keeps with Wanda's heritage of her being Romani and the love and care put into it. There is a particular scene in the early part of the book involving Peter, Wanda, and a bully that had me pumping my fists and saying "That's my GOAT!". Peter does something and it involves being protective of Wanda. If I had a critique and that is I wish the book was longer! I didn't want to leave this universe. I hope a sequel is made someday or comics, for I would love to revisit it especially after that ending. So I give this story a solid 9/10. I will be reading it multiple times! I love it! ... show more

  • McGuire may just write my fave Wanda EVER
Format: Kindle
Admittedly, I know more about Wanda from the movies than the comics, but that is the absolute beauty of this novel because Seanan McGuire gives us a coherent origin story that is also damned entertaining. MASSIVE massive bonus points for actually having a Romani character (several in fact) written by a Romani author. I genuinely loved all of the relationships between the characters but particularly Wanda and Doctor Strange (who I normally want to punch in the throat and instead found myself wanting to give him a big hug and Aunt May's phone number), and a beautifully gleshed-put May Parker. While I was marginally confused about the framing sequence with that dpecific Watcher (hence the awesome WHAT IF...? series of novels), I'm sure all will be revealed in time! It's not just a great Scarlet Witch story, it's a fantastic Spider-Man story as well, which makes sense given McGuire's epic run on Ghost Spider. I really loved seeing Peter's evolution as a hero from Wanda's POV, and I absolutely ADORED her Gwen Stacy. I've only read the first two novels in the series thus far, but I've enjoyed both tremendously and this is such a solid fun adventure that does Wanda's heritage justice, and explores it in a way that I have never seen before and really really enjoyed. ... show more

  • Its ok
Format: Kindle
I love this author and read pretty much anything she writes. Scarlet Witch and Spiderman have always been some of my favorite characters. I loved comics when I was young but I haven't read them regularly in the past 25 years because I feel they went off the rails years ok with all the rewriting and rebooting of their universe. That being said, I always did love a good What If? I think the set up was done well. Overall the book was ok. I was able to put it down easily because it didn't grab me the same way that the October Day books do. I liked the story ok but there were things that bothered me. It wasn't bad and I wanted to finish it but I think a few things could have been handled better. ... show more

  • Great book, excellent alternate story!
Format: Hardcover
This was a very well-written and well-thought out alternative to the standard canon of both the regular Marvel comics as well as the MCU. I won't put any spoilers in here, suffice to say that it's a delight to read and a balm in the wound of any fans of the Scarlet Witch that have been suffering under how she's gotten a bad rap at the hands of the MCU and comics over the past few years. About the only quibble I might have is that it lacks a certain magnetic personality that's prominent in her history, but it's a very minor issue as the story is tight and you don't really notice that at all. Highly recommend this for any fans of either the Scarlet Witch or Spidey out there. ... show more

  • Issues
Format: Kindle
A book featuring two of my favorite Marvel characters? You would think I’d love it, but sadly, this novel ended up being a frustrating mess of unfinished stories, excessive character cameos, and unearned, rushed story arcs—particularly Spider-Man’s redemption. The experience feels like a tale of two halves. The first third of the book is genuinely excellent, creating a masterful interweaving of Peter and Wanda’s origins and their shared grief. In these early chapters, Peter Parker effectively serves as a tabula rasa for the reader—a blank slate used to observe and reflect upon Wanda’s complex development. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that Peter is being kept as a one-dimensional character. While the author is clearly the opposite of misogynistic—rightfully centering Wanda’s power and narrative—they do so at the total expense of the male lead. By over-correcting to ensure Wanda’s prominence, the author fails to allow Peter to grow or evolve alongside her. Had Peter been permitted to develop with the same complexity granted to Wanda, it would have raised the stakes and the overall quality of the book tremendously. Instead, his static nature makes him feel less like a hero and more like a narrative tool, contributing to the "disjointed" feel of the second half. The narrative opens with a flash-forward to a future scenario that the reader is led to believe will be the central plot, yet this high-stakes situation remains barely relevant until it is abruptly wrapped up in the final twenty pages. This structural failure is particularly disappointing because the book aspires to be an exploration of complex familial architecture. It attempts to navigate the tension between biological heritage, adoptive upbringing, and chosen kinship. Unfortunately, this thematic ambition is undermined by a fragmented focus and an over-reliance on superficial tropes, leaving the domestic narrative feeling hollow and unresolved. This book had the bones of a masterpiece, but it ultimately fails its protagonists. If the author had moved Peter beyond his "tabula rasa" status and allowed him to be a fully realized character without fear of overshadowing Wanda, the emotional depth could have carried the entire novel. Instead, the story treats one of Marvel’s most nuanced heroes as an afterthought. Because the book offers such a poor reflection of Peter Parker’s depth, I cannot recommend this even to die-hard Spider-Man fans. In fact, those who love these characters most will likely find this superficial treatment the most disappointing of all. ... show more
