  • Better than expected
Style: USB Mic with Boom Arm
I work in Audio-Visual production, so I have a bit of a background in the technology that goes into this Marantz microphone. I needed a mic that I could use with video calls for personal and work use. The POD Pack 1 has the exact frequency response needed to block all unwanted noise in my office and pick up only my voice. Previous microphones that I had purchased were picking up my multiple PC's fans, second hand ticking from clocks and wind noise from my ceiling fan. This unit excluded all of these background noises and pick up my voice very clearly from a distance of one-foot. LOVE IT! ... show more

  • Surprising quality of sound for the money, a very good deal considering it includes the arm too.
Style: USB Mic with Boom Arm
The media could not be loaded. I was a sound engineer many years ago, mostly using SM58s and 57s for live performances, but this is my first USB microphone, so I'm not an expert on what is available these days or in studio / non-performance recording. ABOVE THE FOLD SUMMARY - great mic for someone starting out doing podcasts or indoor studio / youtube channel recording. Most likely, the quality you get from this mic will surpass whats available natively on traditional cameras commonly used for youtube channels. For the current price of $44, this is a great deal and since you know you are purchasing an inexpensive mic, you wont be dissapointed. LONGER REVIEW To assess the audio quality recording, I recorded my own voice directly into Adobe Premiere. Overall, I was very impressed with the quality of sound for a mic at this price point. The highest quality sound with the most bass, and most professional sounding, was achieved by speaking directly into the microphone from about 2-3 inches away. Unfortunately, as is to be expected, this also resulted in a noticeable amount of popping, especially in words with the letter P. In my attempts to try to eliminate or drastically reduce the popping, I tried a few different hacks. First, turning my head about 10-15 degrees I spoke to a point between 2 and 3 inches to the side of the mic. My second attempt to reduce the popping was to place a lens cloth between me and the mic. None of this would be necessary if I had a pop guard, but from what I tried, the lens cloth, being the closer hack to actually using a pop guard, yielded the the more effective results, with the least amount of impact to audio volume. I have included the audio from this test, and you will be able to hear the results from my tests. At the end of the recording is a segment recorded with my sons Blue Yeti USB Microphone - Silver . This is not a "fair", or apples to apples comparison, but that is the only other USB mic in the house, and, to be fair the quality of the audio Marantz isn't as far removed from the Blue Yeti as the price difference would seem to suggest. Outside of the actual performance of the mic, the other elements worthy of noting are the construction of the mic, its connection to the arm and the arm itself. The arm is great to have but its not super smooth and doesn't have to best range of motion. In addition, the rod that goes into the arm from the base of the mic doesn't have the firmest grip and while it does stay in place, it is a bit loose. PROS: Marantz is a trusted name in audio The Pod Pack is great value for the money Sounds great except for the popping, but that can be reduced by a guard which can be obtained for $10-$15 Includes the required USB cable USB cable is removable so if it ever fails, you can replace it You just plug it in and it will be ready to use within a few minutes CONS: The piece of rubber / foam on the clamp that grips the table shifted after the first use Would prefer a more fluid arm with greater range, but again, this is a budget bundle so I'm not too upset In summary, if this is your price range, then pull the trigger. The sound from this mic is the type you associate with a radio broadcast. I always upsell myself on everything I buy, but in this case, since I had the chance to test this at the same time I used the Blue Yeti for the first time, for my needs, I was perfectly happy with the results from the Marantz. ... show more

  • Excellent Mic, but....
Style: USB Mic w/ Monitoring & Mute Button
For the product itself, I'm super happy. It does the job and does it well. I'm knocking off a star because Marantz gives you the extra incentive to buy this product by saying, hey register and get this Akai MPC Beats app for free. Maybe it sounds silly, but that was actually one of the reasons I bought this. I figured I'd get a pretty decent mic and some pretty decent software to go with it. I'm a beginner to recording audio on my computer, but I am actually trying to explore this a bit. So the website they give you register did not accept ANY email address you input for registration for almost a month. Didn't matter what browser I used, or what OS I was coming from. For reference, I am and have been a bit of a computer nerd for years, have been working in the tech industry as an Engineer for nearly 30 years. So at home I have 2 Linux machines, a Mac, and a Windows machine. And all those machines have quite a variety of browsers on them. I tried them all, so it's pretty clear the site was broken. Today (April 11th), the registration site works. Yay! I've finally registered my product. But guess what? The links to download the freaking software don't work! So the mic itself is great. My only concern now is that if Marantz can't get their own site working properly, what if something happens and I need support? I can code and I can fix the heck out of a computer, but I don't know squat about audio equipment, I'm a beginner. The mic seems quality, so hopefully I never have to find out. TLDR - The mic seems awesome, I'd recommend it any day. Marantz though seems like they'd been a pain to deal with if I ever had to. ... show more
