I'm a bit of a light buff (used to be a lurker on CandlePowerForums). I first saw these lanterns on Amazon (only place I've seen them to date) and they attracted me for several reasons. They looked sturdily built, thoughtfully designed, and I liked that they had diffuser over the LEDs. (I've noticed most small LED lanterns expose the LEDs directly to your eyes, and the light is too glaring.) Plus, I liked that they came in a multi-pack and I thought the colors looked nice. So when they came in back in stock for under $20, I bought them. Although I've only had them two days, I couldn't be more pleased. The lights are about the size I expected--when closed with the handles collapsed, it is about the size of a standard soup can. The handles, fully extended, add about four inches in length. They are a good size for anyone to easily carry with one hand, and the finish and handles are "grippy"; good for clumsy types like me. The extended top adds another four inches or so. The top lifts easily and smoothly, yet there's just enough resistance to make me think it would be difficult to open accidentally and drain the battery. The light is bright! In fact, it's brighter than I expected. I have a 30-day UST lantern that claims 300 lumens at full brightness, but this lantern's 146 lumens seems more than half as bright as that. The light is what I would call a "daylight" and not a "soft white" or warm color, but the white is at least as emphasized as the blue, so it's not unduly harsh. You can dim the lantern by simply not fully extending the top, although don't expect extremely granular control over light output. Still, it's a nice feature that allows for some adjustment. Also, be aware that the LEDs seem to put out full power regardless of how extended the top is, so you're probably not saving battery by keeping it partially closed. Speaking of battery: another reason I wanted these lanterns is the fact that they are powered from 3 AA's. I love the runtime of D-lanterns, but those batteries are expensive. AA's are ubiquitous, and I had enough rechargeables in my collection to throw in each of the four lanterns I received. As an aside, I applaud the choice of AA's instead of AAA's, which have a quarter of the runtime at the same price! I haven't run down a set of AA's in these lanterns yet, but I'm going on a week-long trip to a rural cabin next month and I expect they will run all night without a hitch. The batteries are easy to remove and replace (much easier than the infamous 3D lanterns that require you to line up a tiny, slippery notch inside the cover). Even if they get run down, it's no biggie to recharge them or just buy another set of alkalines. And since I got four of them, there's a lantern for each of us. So yeah, these lanterns seem like a great value, and I'm surprised at how nice the build quality and how thoughtful the design is for the price. I'll make one final note: the colors actually look pretty much in real life like they do in the picture--which can be a rare thing on Amazon. I'll upload a customer image so you can see what I mean (and another image or two with the lantern on, like you need some pictures of that on here, right?) As another reviewer said--just get them! I just bought a set of these. It was almost an impulse buy. Thanks to Amazon alerting me to the great sales price “for a limited time only! Act now!” type thing. I have had a couple of Dietz cold bast kerosene lanterns for a number of years that I’d used during blackouts. I’ve owned the Dietz lanterns years before these types of LED lanterns were even on the market. While pretty looking and nostalgic, cold blast lanterns are not especially bright and they are not kid-friendly to operate. You have to fill them with kerosene fuel and light them with a match. If you knock one over, call the fire department. 2 years ago we went through Hurricane Harvey and I discovered my emergency lighting preps were not up to the level I want. Fire based lighting, not enough lumens, not enough lanterns to go around, etc. Then I saw these LED lanterns. I really like that they came in a 4-pack too! Now I have safe, bright, user-friendly light for 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms. They are very portable too because they are super light weight and have a carrying handle. No ON/OFF switch to find in the dark like on my Rayovac lantern. The Rayovac is way brighter and WAY more durable than these lanterns. It’s also sealed against water and the D size batteries it runs on last for eons. Still, ever time you pick it up, you have to spin it around in your hands trying to find the switch. Not with these little gems. You just pull the top and bottom apart and they spring to life! The brightness is adjustable by how much you open it too. Runs on 3 AA batteries. The size, light weight, built in carrying handles, and ease of use make these ideal for my household. I have a little toddler who has grown into the stage where she’s afraid of the dark now. I’ve trained her on how to use these lanterns so that if the power goes out, she knows how to grab one and get instant light. The convenience and peace of mind in a 4-pack at this price is hard to beat. Are there any down sides? Yes. First off, they are advertised with “military grade materials”. Not sure what they’re referring to. The LEDs? LOL! The housing is plastic, the globe is plastic, there is no o-ring around the battery cover to seal it against water. Yeah, nah. No military grade materials here. Just a decent set of household emergency lanterns. 146 lumens. They’re bright enough, but don’t expect it to illuminate like a 500 watt work light. Many companies market identical lanterns. I have an itek model that is 260 lumens. Other than the LED array it’s nearly identical to these lanterns. The itek lantern also has an array of 3 magnets on the bottom to allow it to be suspended from a ferrous surface (like steel). To me, this is a rather significant difference as the magnets make this lantern much more versatile. So when you shop for this style of lantern, you really just need to compare lumens and price because unless there are other features like magnets, they are all essentially identical. ... show more

I have not used them yet. Like the look much better than flashlights and they seem to be quite bright. I inserted batteries on one and they seem to be quite bright. They will be very handy when the lights go out. A good buy for the cost
