  • A+ A Strong, Light and Useful Camping Mess Kit
Style: 1 Liter Pot
I am a retired US Army NCO who is more than 70 years old, lives in New Mexico and loves to hike and camp. At my age, I'm always on the lookout for good lightweight kit. I do not submit reviews until I've used the item. My experience with this little kit was very good. The kit comes with a little fry pan and a little sauce pan that nest into each other. There is a terrific little carved bamboo stir spoon a couple of plastic little bowls or cups a little folding ladle, a sauce pan cover and I got a Prime Day Special extra addition; a nifty little metal folding spork. In addition to all of this, it has a nice little cloth sack with a nicely made plastic closure to hold the little kit nice and snug together when it is stuffed in my ruck sack. I washed it all up, stuffed in an extra pair of socks and a couple of bandana handkerchiefs so it did not rattle (an old army habit). I usually bring a little grub for the trip; a couple of hard boiled eggs, some hard tack, some precooked brown rice with peas and carrots and corn kernels and an apple or two; along with some dark roasted coffee beans. I set up camp after a few hours out. my tiny camp stove heated up and this terrific little kit did everything it was supposed to do. The coffee beans heated up great and the coffee was great. This little kit did exactly what it was supposed to do, it is light and strong, well made and I expect that it will provide me with hot meals out on the backside of the high dessert for years to come. I bought this thing sight unseen and hoped for the best: I got the best. If you come to the New Mexico high dessert, you will see the stars as GOD intended you to see them. Boil up some coffee and when you see the Milky Way, you will feel as if you could reach up and touch the face of GOD. Come and camp in New Mexico for your next vacation; and bring along this little MalloMe Mess Kit. You will never regret the journey or the purchase of this little kit. Signed, Frank ... show more

  • Decent, but needs corrections and tweaks, priced right.
Style: 1 Liter Pot
I sent this to Adam w/MalloMe, but have yet to receive a response. I have yet to actually use the MalloMe cookware, but plan to test it in the coming days/weeks. However, I do have a few comments/concerns. 1) Probably the most disappointing issue is the weight of the cookware set. Because I'm in the process of planning to thru-hike the PCT next year (2017), with various training hikes this year, a major concern is carry weight. The advertised weight was the primary reason that I purchased this cookware set. The second factor was that this set included a frying pan (a plus). The advertisement on here on Amazon claims equal weights for shipping and actual weight. Unfortunately, both are far from accurate. The claim of 0.7 pounds (11.2 ounces) is inaccurate! Using a quality, approved, digital postal scale the measured weights are as follows: Skillet = 4.0 oz Pot = 4.8 oz Lid = 1.8 oz (2) plastic bowls = 1.4 oz Wooden spoon = 0.5 oz Soup Spoon = 1.0 oz Spork = 1.0 oz Bag = 0.8 oz Loofah = <0.0 oz ------------------------------ This total alone adds up to 15.3 ounces. Yes, when backpacking long distances, EVERY ounce matters! I will not carry/use the included soup spoon, spork, or loofa and that brings the carry weight down to ~13.2 ounces, still over the advertised weight. PLEASE CORRECT. 2) The pot arrived with a small dent on the bottom (from the inside out). Not a big deal, and I'm honestly not worried about it, but felt I should mention it for your own (Adam's) records when it comes to the manufacturing facility you use. 3) I'm not sure why loofah is included in comparison to a small, finish compatible scouring pad. I removed the loofah from the kit and purchased a 10-pack of 3-3/4" x 5-3/4" light duty scouring pads for $1.00 at the local dollar store. These are easily cut in half (or quarters) to provide 20-40 individual pads for the cookware set at $0.025 to 0.050 each. These are easier to use when cleaning the smaller pieces of the cookware set, hold less moisture, and clean easier. Benefits: The price is right, and the quality (prior to testing) seems adequate. The weight is still quite good. ------------------------ Suggestions 1) Please correct the posted weights in the advertising 2) Please provide volumes for each item: --- Pot = ~24oz / 3 cups --- Skillet = ~12 oz / 1.5 cups (nearly at the top) --- Bowls = ~one level cup 3) Replace the loofah with a small scouring pad (allows better cleaning and more room) 4) Replace the two tapered bowls with two slightly larger, unequal-sized bowls (and possibly a lightweight neoprene cozy for each) that fit inside each other and inside the pot together. 4.1) This change could "hopefully" allow for fitting a 220g fuel canister inside. This would be a huge space-saving benefit! 5) Modify the storage bag to where it can hold water, providing a sink function for easy cookware cleaning. 6) Consider a cozy for the pot. Most of these suggestions are based upon prior experiences, while also comparing to features offered by the considerably more expensive GSI Outdoors cooksets. ... show more

  • This Mess Kit is the Best!
Style: 1 Liter Pot
I am seriously so happy with this cooking set. My hiking backpack is only 55L, so I don't have a huge amount of room and every inch and ounce counts. I'm also the type of person who likes to be prepared for anything when I go out, so having at least basic cooking items with me when I go out exploring is a must. This set exceeded my expectations. They arrived in their own sturdy drawstring carrying sack, and my first thought was how nicely compact the set looked from the outside. Then I opened everything up, and I was really impressed at how many useful items were packed away in such a small space. Lifting the lid and finding a folding ladle, folding eating utensil, and a wooden spoon/spatula just makes you feel like you have everything you need to put a quick meal together. The handles of the pans curve and fold against the pans when storing, and open up to make sturdy handles while cooking. Everything nests inside everything else to make for a really small and easily portable cooking set. Before buying this set, I read several reviews complaining that the pans weren't big enough to cook for multiple people in. They're not, but they're not supposed to be. This is a single-person mess kit, and an exceptionally good one. If you need to cook for a family of four, this is not going to be the most convenient or quickest way to do it. This set is sized to be lightweight individual gear for the hiker or backpacker. The pans fit perfectly on my portable butane stove, they clean up nicely with the included sponge/scrubber, and easily pack back up in an instant. Once everything is packed in the bag, there is still room inside the pot for a couple of other small cooking items that you may want to keep handy, or other items such as a lighter and your pocket stove. The only other thing I would have loved to have seen included with this set is an actual plastic spatula (such as the kind you would flip fried eggs with). I bought a small one from the local thrift store for .75 cents and added it to my kit, just because a wooden spoon isn't always thin enough to get under the edges of food and flip them, and I figured using a plastic spatula for those types of tasks instead of the included metal eating utensil will help protect my new cookware from scratches and keep it looking nice longer. ... show more

  • Great value for money; high quality and great portability.
Style: 1 Liter Pot
Great quality and usability. All components are made from high quality materials, and they feel sturdy when used. I guess, like with any other cooking equipment, good care is needed to ensure longevity. The pot and pan conduct heat really quick, so make sure you have all your cooking ingredients prepped and near by if you don't want things to burn or spill over. I was glad to see that whatever did stick to the bottom easily came off using the included wooden ladle and/or cold water. I love the size and light weight and the bag they come in. The kit can easily find a confortable spot in any backpack, and is well self contained so you won't have utensils allover the place. Perhaps the only downside is the size/volume of the pan. The pot volume sufficed for a decent [delicious] banana-peanut-butter and soya milk porridge breakfast for 2, and for cooking 2 big instant ramen packs. The pot might have enough volume for a decent pasta serving for 2 (but I haven't yet tried it). The pan is more on the size of single servings. If you have a big appetite, two stoves (or 2 burners on one) and cook for 2+ you may want to get two of these kits. Perhaps it's safe to say that this is for personal use, or will require multiple batches for more people. Overall I highly recommend this product for anyone looking for quality and portability at a very decent price. It certainly kept our tummies and backs happy on our last camping trip. ... show more

  • Good, not great
Style: 1 Liter Pot
Used this set for the first time this weekend in a camp out with food prepared on a grill & Dutch oven, so this set became my bowls and plate. Here is my review of each piece: Whole set - from the picture, it kind of looked like to me that everything locks together, when it does not. It all stacks, then you keep it together by placing it in the carrying/storage bag. It took me a little bit of time arranging & re-arranging to make everything fit so the lid would stay level. It actually made me quite annoyed I couldn't get it to fit without several tries. - pot & pan: as stated above, I did not directly cook with them, but ate out of them. The handle grips are made of hard plastic that is smooth where they come together when flipped out as a handle. Because of this, they tended to shift back and forth when held by the handle. Both were easy to clean up with no scraping required. - plastic bowls (2): these were easily my favorite. Great way to separate cold like fruit or a salad from the hot main dish. Also easy to clean. - plastic ladle: the handle flips out by squeezing through a smaller channel before locking in place. The prongs on either side did not stick through the holes very far, and they kept popping out. Not difficult to put them back in, but kind of a pain. - folding metal spork: suffers the same problem as the ladle prongs coming out. I also had to hold it so to reinforce the pivot point because it can fold up on you while scooping. - wooden spatula: this is the item that gums up the works when trying to put it all back together. Since it is longer than the bowl bottom, it sits at an angle. Would have been nice if it were just a little shorter. You really have to do some creative packing to get the lid to sit on the top pot level when storing. Would have been really great if it all somehow locked together. Since it doesn't, a rubber band works ok. Love all the pieces. There may be other designs that work better for you though. ... show more

  • Practical & Durable
Style: 1 Liter Pot
At the point of writing this review I have had this for several years now. I love it! It's nice for single person meal production, the little pot will easily make a packet of ramen while using the pan to saute some veg to put in it. My set is still going strong, I've used it while touching grass in the great outdoors & I've used it in the house on the stove top, they are almost just as cute today as the day they arrived. My one complaint is with the handles, I feel that they should snap into place or there should be some sort of hook system so they are easier to manage while cooking. They also fit easily into my pack & add negligible weight. The included bowls are a touch small, but if you choose to use them it's not like you can't get seconds LOL. ... show more
