  • Great tool and better price!
I use a lot of Makita products so having the battery was right on. The saw works perfectly and cuts with little effort. Features like the optional forward trigger and the work light make this a perfect tool.

  • great design!
it can be difficult to talk about the features of a saws-all. After all, they are all much the same right? No! This Makita model is a cut above the rest. It is light, well balanced and has any number of different ways to hold it, depending on purpose. The most unusual thing about it is there are 2 power switches. One at the back handle, much like any saw, but also has a paddle button along the shaft of the tool, This allows it to be used at different angles, both left handed and right handed and get into almost any position to reach difficult cuts. This is not an all-conquering saws-all beast - much more surgical in design for small cuts in wood or plastic with one or 2 hands. It would not be suitable for the more brutish jobs of cutting repeaedly theough metal or large section timber. After buying this, I'm not sure I will need a jigsaw because this should double up as one. Only negative thing is that Makita could have used a brushless motor. ... show more

  • Difficult to operate, weak, slow
I can't use this for anything serious, but then again, it's a lightweight version, not a monster. Know what you're using and what you're using it for. If you know what it's for, things like drywall, plastics, and soft wood, it's okay, and you probably won't have many complaints. Once you move to metals, it can do it, but it kinda sucks. Getting it started is a bit of a pain (for obvious safety reasons), but once it's running, it's fairly easy to keep going. I use 6 ah batteries, so they last quite a long time. Considering it is NOT a powerful model, it's fairly good at what it is designed for, and the price is reasonable. ... show more

  • Absolutely useless
I am a general contractor, I use and love Makita products almost exclusively, BUT this thing is absolutely useless .. It has no power, and takes forever to make it's way through even the softest of pine. I've tried various types of blades and 5A batteries. This is no more a reciprocating saw than a flashlight is a light saber.... DO NOT purchase. There is a free one for you in my jobsite dumpster. ... show more

  • This comes in handy for small jobs.
This is a nice tool for limited use. If you use it for any extended amount of time it will get hot which is not exactly a good thing. But when you want to make a quick cut this is much easier to use than its bigger brother which I also own which is why I say its nice for limited use. If your looking to buy this for all day use your wasting your money but for small jobs this is an ideal tool to have. ... show more

  • Nice tool, but could use some tweaks for ergonomics
I am most certainly a fan of the Makita 18v LXT lineup. I own MANY of said tools. I purchased this one as of late because the larger full-size recip saw is sometimes too heavy or large for certain applications. On first glance, this tool is made very well. Makita is top-of-the-line in power tools, so this is expected. The weight and balance are both acceptable, and are the best I could imagine they can be. There are two caveats that I can see, however. The first being the stroke length of the cut. It is small. It is similar to that of a 12v recip saw. That means twice as much time to make a cut as it's full-size bigger brother. It also means that the likeliness of vibration in the object being cut is increased, because the blade is making a short stroke versus a large stroke. This can make the cut even slower, and also be more of a pain to hold onto. Since this tool is made for one-handed use, the likely scenario involves holding the object in the other hand. You get where I'm going with this. My second dislike is the ergonomics of the triggers. I am a tall man with rather large hands. It is rather awkward to use the top (barrel) trigger. The diameter of the housing is just not conducive to good control and proper trigger actuation. The rear handle mounted trigger is a different story. It is rather easy to use, as would be expected since this is the normal location and shape/size for the rest of their tools. The problem with this trigger lies in the weight distribution. It is obviously more awkward to hold up the front weight of the saw from the rear of the tool. This makes for a better two-handed use. All-in-all this is a decent tool, but I would likely not purchase it again. ... show more
