Style: Plunge Saw Only
Truth be told, I’ve wanted a track saw for years, but had trouble justifying the cost. But with a new project a hand, including a dozen doors which needed to be trimmed widthwise to fit, it was finally time. Each of these doors needed 3/16” to 1/4” trimmed off the hinge side. These doors are too big and heavy for me to wrestle on my small table saw by myself, and and I didn’t trust myself using a circular saw. This tool made short work of slicing an edge off each of these doors, with each cut coming out flawless. Setup couldn’t have been easier. Dust collection was excellent. And since I’m working in a new house with no workshop set up yet, I really appreciated being able to lay the doors on a sheet of 3/4” rigid foam board and cut them right on the floor. Should’ve taken the “plunge” and bought one of these years ago. After this project is done it’ll be used to break down plywood sheets for other projects. ... show more

  • Works as good as my friend's fancy corded Festool.
Style: Kit (5.0Ah)
Iv'e been doing construction and finish carpentry fo 20 years, I have no idea why I didn't buy one of these years ago. If yo work alone and have to make precise cuts in sheet goods this is a "must have" item. I have also used it for Ripping 2x material at an angle to plumb up walls in remodeling. When ripping 2xs it works best to take 2 or 3 passes. You will also need to order 2 of the tracks and 2 of the track connector kits to get the best results on 4x8 sheets. Makita's liturature says one connector kit but 2 make a much more solid connection. ... show more

  • Power and precision!
Style: Kit (5.0Ah)
2, 5ah batteries last about 1 hour of production style cutting. Even up to 2 hours depending on the material and pressure used to push the saw through the material. Mine has performed exceptionally well production cutting as you might do with a corded tool. I’ve done tens of thousands of repetitive cuts with this saw, running it all day for weeks on end. The saw is very accurate on the track and cuts exactly at the edge of the anti-splinter strip and the bevel cuts are equally as accurate to the bottom edge of the anti-splinter strip. After making several thousand cuts throughout the bevel range in 12mm material I made a few gang cuts in stacked material at full depth of cut that the saw is capable of and noticed that there were new shavings from the splinter guard left after the cut. I’m not sure why the blade would have a slightly different path on a full depth cut. I wasn’t pushing very hard and it happened anywhere on the track that I made a full depth cut. It still seems accurate to the edge of the splinter strip though. I have cleaned the blade several times but it’s possible it has gotten dull and is deflecting in deep cuts although I’m taking those cuts slow. The saw runs very smooth and cuts extremely smooth as expected from Makita tools. It comes with a 55 tooth blade and spins it 2,500 to 6,300 rpm which is adjustable with a speed dial. It feels like it keeps the speed in the cut for any given speed setting and a small green light near the battery level indicators lights up when the saw is maintaining speed under load. The available high speed, the 55 tooth blade plus the automatic speed change feature combined make for an extremely smooth feel when cutting. If you have a second pair of 5ah batteries then you will be able to have two charged before you can ever run the two installed on the saw out of power. The plunge action pivots the blade into a plunge cut on an arc from a pivot point near base at the rear of the saw. You do have to keep a little forward pressure when plunge cutting and take it slow or it will kick back. My track has a cut in it from the saw kicking back on someone. There are now about 4 inches of the splinter strip that I can’t use The saw is very light weight and easy to use. The dust collection works very well and removes almost all of the dust if the dust collector hooked up to it is decent. I’ve had ok success even with an in-expensive Ridgid shop vac. Very smooth running and relatively quiet. It has a full featured set of adjustable controls. The blade size is interchangeable with other brand’s replacement blades but Makita does use a 165mm blade as does DeWalt (I also own the cordless DeWalt track saw). Most track saws use a 160mm blade and most replacement blades are 160mm. As long as the arbor is 20mm and the blade is 165mm or less it will work well in the tool. The blade the saw comes with is has a 2.2mm kerf as do most replacement blades whether they’re Makita or any other brand including DeWalt and many Tenryu. The replacement splinter strip and friction strips for the track are easy to find and are relatively in-expensive to replace but will last around 5-10 thousand cuts and last longer when used with dust collection. They usually only need replacement from improper storage or kick-back cutting into them. The cases are great and are compatible with certain Festool cases and dust collectors with storage connections on the top. The saw is comparable with Festool tracks as well but the Makita tracks cost less and are equally well made. Overall, this saw is a professional precision tool that performs well, is also reliable, powerful and durable. I hope this review is helpful. ... show more

  • should have bought one years ago!
Style: Plunge Saw Only
I am a contractor who has to cut a lot of plywood. I have tried every method under the sun from chalk lines to self clamping straightedges. This saw and rail system is simply amazing. it is soo accurate and fast I was able to cut 12 sheets of whitewood veneer plywood into strips in less than 1 hour. Try that with a tables or straightedge. What is most remarkable is the accuracy of the cut and clean the cut is. It is glue joint quality. The batteries last along time, I can cut all day and not need to recharge. ... show more

  • This is my second one, I like it so much I bought another after mine was stolen.
Style: Plunge Saw Only
I love this saw, my old one was stolen and without hesitation, I bought it again. Read the directions on how to set up the guide and saw and then buy extra tape for the guide. I use this to break down big sheets of plywood, trim doors and do precision cutting. My old workflow included a big contractor table saw in my truck and all the things I needed to use the table saw to break down sheets. With the track saw, I now keep a much smaller table saw on the truck and use the track saw for the bigger work. ... show more

  • After agonizing about this for years, I wish I'd purchased it sooner
Style: Plunge Saw Only
I have no regrets at all about buying this tool, it's made my life so much easier in my small garage/shop space! Everything I do needs to fit on one half of a two-car garage, so space efficiency is a priority. I've built many cabinets and large pieces, but handling large plywood sheets or tabletops has also been a slow and tedious process. The track saw has made a world of difference! No more edge guides and clamps to worry about, I just set the track down and cut (I still can't believe the track stays in place without clamps). The cut is as good as my table saw, and while I original thought I'd be using this mostly for breaking down sheet goods before finishing on my table saw, I've been using it for final cuts more and more. It's that good! I've also been using it for a lot of quick cuts, so I don't have to roll out my jobsite table saw for a quick cut or two. This is so much faster! One of the first purchases I did after getting this saw was some rigid foam board insulation to cut on. They're relatively cheap and lightweight, and make a great cutting platform so you don't cut into your workbench or garage floor. I cut the foam into 4 or 5 sections, to make storage easier, then lay out as many as I need for a given project. I did find the pink foam board works a lot better than the white board version. The white board was similar to styrofoam packaging, and would shred easily and made a mess. The pink board was much better. It's a little more expensive, but will make your experience much better. ... show more
