Style: Miter Saw
First I want to note that I'm coming from a Festool Kapex miter saw. Actually two of them. The saw was used generally for cutting 1" think maple and poplar at 90-45deg.The first one lasted for about 5 years and the second one for about 2 before a motor failure. I'm still a Festool fan and I own multiple different types of tools from them, but the repair of the saw out of warranty is in the 250-300 range (with shipping), plus the headache of not having the tool for a week. And let me tell you- these failures are not happening when the saw is not in use. I think for $1.5K they should do a little more research, testing and whatever it takes to make the motors a little more rigid. So, from that experience with the Kapex I decided it is time to look for something else. My attention went to two saws- Makita LS1019 L and Bosch CM10GD and the reason why is the type of forward rail system and space saving capabilities since it is intended for shop use.To me there ware a few factors that I was looking for- precision of cut (miter and bevel), dust collection, ease of use, versatility, ergonomics. Let me stars with the Bosch saw: Firs thing I noticed was that packaging was nice, which if bad is one of the main reasons for inaccurate tools after destress. Miter and bevel was adjusted to be perfect 90deg before I started testing.The miter cut was good, but the bevel cut had some sort of deflection towards the end of the cut, so that was the first negative for me. The tool was hooked to a vacuum but I was not impressed one bit with the dust collection. Compared to the Kapex it was at about 50%, shooting dust all the way to the front of the saw. To me the overall movement of the saw was very smooth, surprisingly, given the bulky looking hinge type movement. Other things I noticed ware that there was an initial kick when you squeeze the trigger and no laser( I don't use a laser for accurate cuts but rather for rough sizing). I liked that all the adjustment ware set in-front of the saw and table and fence ware all relatively strait. To me dust collection, initial trigger kick, no laser, bevel cut not perfect ware a deal breaker. Now about the Makita: Don't think that all was good over here either. Starting with the packaging- as bad as it gets. The first two units came with the box and saw damaged, but the third unit came in OK shape. Now, talking about bad design- they located the dust port in an awkward position sticking from the rear of the saw going backwards. That makes it impossible to push the saw tide against a wall. Surprisingly they have a different set up for the 12" unit(not sure why), which for my surprise fit perfect on the 10" model and has the dust port at the top, so I bought one from Makita for about $21. The things I liked - all cuts ware strait and square after adjusting the miter/bevel and dust collection was close to the one the Kapex had. The movement was smooth, there was a laser, the fence and table ware strait, but also wider (table), there is 60deg miter both ways, bevel is 48deg both sides, no kick at start or stop of the saw, handle was very comfortable. I gave it 5 starts besides the dust port and shipping problems, because it is very close to the Festool Kapex's quality at almost 1/3 price. I only hope it will last a little longer then the Kapex one.

Had this saw about 4 months . Never could get it to cut properly, because the blade carriage and the rails were not aligned (parallel). Obvious saw defect, but I didn't catch it for a long time, thinking it was my poor adjustment skills. (The blade/rail alignment is not adjustable.) Good news is that Makita took the saw back and replaced it with a good one. Excellent customer service. new saw is awesome; perfectly aligned and smooth as silk to operate. Even the stock blade is excellent. The fence is two piece, adding more height when you need to. Work clamp is very easy to use but its not fast. Takes quite a few turns of the knob to secure the work. Would definitely recommend to buy this saw. If you do buy, first thing to do is to check the blade/rail alignment. Best way is to anchor a dial indicator to the table and place point of indicator against the side of the blade. Then move the blade carriage back and forth as far as you can, watching the dial. Be sure not to hit the teeth with the indicator; just the blade body. Acceptable dial indication is .005 movement total, front to back; (.002-.003 is better). More than that will likely give you problems. You need to doublecheck your results by making some cuts as noted in next paragraph. If you don't have a dial indicator, you should try test cuts after setting the blade perfectly square to the fence. First try a plunge cut (no sliding). This cut should be a perfect 90 degree . (use a good square to check against a backlight). Then try cutting a wider piece using the slide motion. If the saw is good, this cut will also be near perfect. If it isn't, doublecheck your settings and do it again. If still no go; consider replacing the saw, because it cant be adjusted to fix this type of problem. If you're happy with the cuts, keep the saw; you'll really like it. Its worth going thru the checkout process because this is just a great saw. But I guess they made a batch of bad ones, so you have to be careful.

Style: Miter Saw
I had the first Makita sliding miter saw, LS1011. It served me well as an active home woodworker for a couple of decades. The blade developed some wobble and Makita no longer made the parts to repair it. The new saw is more accurate, much quieter, has a higher fence, it is easier to tilt the saw, the dust collection is better (I use a dust collection system), and the table rotation settings are easier and more accurate. I haven't used the new saw long term but the settings so far have not moved. I made wooden zero clearance inserts to replace the plastic adjustable ones for most cuts. One of the complaints I have read is that the back screws for these plastic adjustable zero clearance plates are inaccessible under the fence. They are accessible if you rotate the table in both directions. Another complaint I read is that the fence height extension sets back slightly from the bottom fence. For most cuts the higher fence is really not used. If you are cutting crown molding against the table and the upper fence, it doesn't matter if the upper fence is flush with the lower fence. I think this was probably done on purpose, but it is not obvious why it was done, unless it was difficult to make the two fences flush when removing and reinstalling the upper fence. My only complaint is that the 2nd switch that is necessary to turn on the blade is a natural part of my grip on the saw so I turn on the blade without intentionally activating the second switch. On my previous saw this safety switch was easily accessible but I had no problems activating it unintentionally. The laser light seems to be very accurate. I haven't decided whether I want to depend on it or check the cut location by touching the non-turning blade to the workpiece before turning the saw on. Another thing I like is that the vertical hold down for the workpiece is quicker to adjust than on the old saw. I have the saw mounted semi-permanently to cabinets in my shop that have a lowered center section for the saw. For portable use the saw is heavy for carrying.

Replaced my old Hitachi C10FSH to save some space in my new shop. Read many reviews that griped about packaging, shipment damage, and, most alarming, a tendency to cut a small radius on wide cuts. Packaging: perfectly adequate. Shipment damage: none. Cutting circles on wide cuts: in fact this is what it did on my first 12" cut. About 1/32" out of whack. This won't do. Then I got to thinking - a common characteristic of slide miter saws is a tendency to do this if the locking knob on the miter table is not tightened down. So I checked, and, sure enough, the table lock was loose. So I tightened it up and, presto, a perfectly straight, square cut. It made no sense to me that Makita would market a tool that had the essential cutting feature out of alignment. Well, they didn't. I'd read a number of reviews from experienced professionals who complained about this defect. I am a carpenter and cabinet builder with 50 years experience in the trade. I was around in the days when the standard cutoff saw was a Craftsman radial arm (when was the last time you saw one of those?). All in all, the best miter saw I've ever used. Smooth slide mechanism, the compound lock on the front is a huge plus, and dust collection can be brought to 80-90%. I hooked up the supplied dust collection shroud (dual port) to a standard 2-1/2" shop vac hose using an adapter kit that I found at Home Depot for $10. One of the three supplied fittings fit the Makita exhaust port perfectly and snugly (modify this port by using a Dremel to cut off the little brace that's molded into it so the adapter goes all the way down on the port) and the other fits the shop vac hose. Get one of the dual tool switches that turns on the vac when you activate the saw. Leave yourself plenty of hose to accommodate all the saw functions. Fantastic tool. Don't be scared by the negative reviews, many of which simply reflect unfulfilled expectations.

Overall a decent saw. I bought this saw because of the slide and the reduced depth needed for mounting it to a station. However I am really disappointed in a few key things that one would think would be better thought out. First off there is no way to lock the miter angle between detents. It just relies on the friction of the pivot. Secondly the crown stops are a huge disappointment. So much so they are pretty much useless unless you never change angles. Then what’s the point of having a crown stop in the first place. Makita definitely could have done better. Also a shadow line would be a huge improvement over the laser. After using a shadow line for years going back to a one sided laser was well a step back. But for a simple chop saw it does fine.

After reading and viewing a lot of reviews for miter saws, I decided this would be the best value. It’s almost a third of what the Kapex saw from Festool. I had the older Makita sliding miter and wanted an upgrade. The features I like are the dust collection, front mounted rails and the laser guide. These are the new features not found on the older model. The saw arrived two days earlier than expected. The box appeared appeared to have been opened as the bottom was held on by tape. However, everything was included. Easy setup, just screw in the handle and mount the blade (held in by a left hand threaded screw). The fence was 90 degrees to the table, blade 90 degrees to the fence and table. Blade cut splits the laser line. The saw moves on the front rails smoothly. The dust collection was far better than the old model. I’m a bit puzzled why the dust collection connection doesn’t fit a Makita dust extraction vacuum. It’s a 11/2” hose connection that’s extremely short for any connector to grab. I found a solution using a rubber pipe connector generally used by plumbers. Once I was able to connect the vacuum it performed much better. So far, other than the hassle with the connector, I have no issues. It has soft start and a brake to stop the blade sooner. I highly recommend this miter saw.

Best 10" slider makita has produced by far, in my opinion!! Owned a Makita 1013 for years I still own the Dewalt DWS780 12" slider and the Milwaukee 12 slider model 6955-20, both I still use and are great saws, for 12 inch models... I also bought and sold the Festool back in 2014, motor had issues.. When I saw this new Makita I saw a bit of likeness to the Festool, a little!! I set this makita on a Bosch gravity rise stand and went to work using it on a trim job I have.. So far I'm happy and impressed with it and don't see any issues noted in some other reviews with dishing on wider boards.. Pros: lots of power with the direct drive motor setup... Super nice dust collection using my Fein vac, I would say it captures over 80% easily ... maybe around 65% with the included dust bag, just a rough guess... but whatever the % it's really good. Laser works well, although I never use a laser. I would not rely on a laser on any saw, for rough work it seems a nice feature.. The up front bevel knob is really useful and locks tight.. Cut capacity is fantastic... Cuts are super smooth and accurate, without any dishing on wider boards.. Zero play in the miter detents,.. Included blade is actually very good.. Slide action is very smooth and has extremely minimal side to side play, even when fully extended, you really have to get on it and force it side to side to see any side play.. Nice wide turntable for stock support.. Nice stock hold down included.. Included built-in heavy duty adjustable table side extensions... Cons: So far none, we'll see after a few more months of use..but I don't see anything that stands out as becoming an issue.. Overall this new saw seems to be built rock solid... Now if only there was a 12" version!!!!!! Pictures of some large crown that I was just using and baltic birch plywood showing a wide clean cut, also the first trim job I just used this saw on, it worked great..
