Description

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with the information needed to produce a range of traditional fishing tackle items that not only work, but look good too. There can be a lot of satisfaction in using traditional fishing tackle and methods, and if you are using tackle that you have made yourself, the satisfaction can be that much more. For anglers who would like to use traditional fishing tackle but are on a restricted budget, the techniques described in this book can help to save many pounds over the cost of buying ready made items. If you only make a couple of cane rod rests or a handful of quill floats, the money you save will more than cover the cost of this book. Read more

  • The Joys of Crafting Traditional Tackle...Or At Least the Joys of Trying!
Format: Paperback
I love to fish in 'the old manner,' and often eschew the more modern tackle that is now available in favor of more ancient, yet still functional tackle. Mr. Duffield's book is a wonderful addition to not only my library, but to my possibly enhanced skill sets as I will now be setting about using the directions and suggestions he has made about how to make traditional floats out of quills and reeds, float winders, and a myriad of other early English tackle, to see if I can make an assortment of early varieties of such fishing of tackle for my own use. Of course, being a widower is a slight advantage as I will not be facing punishment as I fill my den with bits of feather and quill and wood chips and splashed spots of paint as I endeavor to recreate all that he has so ably described. This is a great book and one that opens new venues for enjoying what one uses to catch fish. ... show more

  • Needs more "how" added to the "what"
Format: Paperback
Very limited instructions which would better be categorized as "descriptions" not instructions. It needs more of the "how" added to the "what". Most of the book was curiously devoted to making a very complex "slingshot", which is not even a traditional fishing technique and a better type of which can be bought online for a few dollars. Why you would spend the amount of time on building one is baffling. The rest is pretty minimal compared to what you can find online. So, if there is any exceptional wisdom to be imparted, then maybe the author should do a couple of videos and dispense with the practically useless print form. ... show more
