Learn the habits and habitats of these challenging fish, what flies they'll take, and how to put those flies in the right place at the right time to catch carp consistently. Barry Reynolds and John Berryman, authors of Pike on the Fly and Beyond Trout, have joined with Brad Befus to challenge you to take advantage of what is certainly the last, great, overlooked flyfishing resource in North America. • THE textbook on fly carping
Format: Paperback
Get all of Mr. Reynolds books. He is a master fly angler and he works with a professional writer. This makes his books head and shoulders above almost all other fly fishing books. The clearly and concisely written sentences are free of grammatical errors and useless information. There are, however, a handful of humorous anecdotes sprinkled here and there in this text, but the vast majority of it contains information useful to the angler in that it will improve their abilities to catch fish. I don’t blame Mr. Reynolds for putting some anecdotes in. Anecdotes are probably expected in a fly fishing book because most fly fishing books contain many useless anecdotes, or are wholly made up from anecdotes and silly stories. Mr. Geirach anyone? Mr. Reynolds is a serious fly fishing author. His books are not like Mr. Geirach’s books. It is amazing what strong technical writing and editing skills can do to improve readability and usefulness of a document. For future editions of this text or for serious fly fishing textbook-producing authors, editors, and publishers: put a robust index in your book! Who wants to spend so much time flipping back and forth through pages and pages and chapters and chapters trying to find a couple sentences!? Who wants to heavily annotate their paperbacks? Not me! And probably not many other people that use these books as frequent references. Do us a solid. It will be much appreciated. ... show more

  • Really, You're Actually Fishing for Carp? On a fly rod?
Format: Paperback
Good Winter reading. Haven't had the opportunity to implement the ideas contained in the book. It's easy reading and fun. I worded the headline to reflect the reaction I typically get when I mention that I'm thinking of fishing for carp.

  • EXCELLENT read
Format: Paperback
This book is great. Short but extremely comprehensive. Contains everything from the carp as a fish and it’s behaviors, to fly selection and precisely how to fish for them in the most common situations. Exactly what I was looking for!

  • A WHOLE new pursuit!
Format: Paperback
I felt challenged when I first took up fly fishing 12 years ago. Had bait-fished for over 30 and had it pretty well dialed: Salmon and Steelhead on ever-lighter gear. Trout? Who cares! BOY, did I have a LOT to learn. Humbling to "start over"! Well, guess what? Carp fishing is the same level step-up. I have gained proficiency with a fly rod, even taught casting but WOW! hitting that "dinner plate" in front of a cruising Carp while up to my butt in a swamp is a whole new experience. To tell the truth, though, it's one I embrace and this book will definitely shorten my learning curve and lessen my frustrations. Carp are a super-cagey prey necessitating use of ALL my skills and knowledge, old AND new. If you intend to succeed, there's no better book to buy. ... show more

  • Not 'The Dream Songs', but still worthwhile
Format: Paperback
I was a little confused by what Berryman was trying to do in this book. Like "Love and Fame," "Carp on the Fly" shows a different Berryman from the one we meet in "The Dream Songs." Here the emphasis seems to be on man's relationship with nature, both outer and inner, and the predatory nature of our connections with that larger world. The use of fish imagery also, perhaps, suggests the pre-birth, womb-nestled state which haunts Berryman's work and, I imagine, haunted his life as well -- in the anti-poetic society in which he lived, he was truly a fish out of water. Berryman's complicated attitude toward Christianity is reflected in the image of the fisherman, whose bright hooks draw fish upwards toward the surface, where they meet a kind of death that is also a transcendence, a shudder of pure, mortal joy. ... show more

  • Fascinating
Format: Paperback
I love the way the book is organized. It's very easy to follow. This book got me pumped up to go do some carp fishing on the fly rod. The carp is the closest thing I can get to a bonefish living in MN. If you want to have a blast catching fish that are huge and probably very close to where you live, this book has everything you need for fly carping. ... show more
