I have fond memories of my dad's 6 cell Maglite. And Maglites are what I used in my first firefighting job in the late 80's. So I enjoy using Maglites as hosts for other lighting components. This flashlight is well made with good attention to detail. Except that the switch is noisy and doesn't feel the same as the switches on my other Maglites. Time will tell. Be aware that this flashlight is only rated at 27 lumens. The light is direct drive and the light output will diminish over the runtime of the light. At the rated runtime, the light output will only be 2.7 lumens per the ANSI FL1 Standard. The beam distance refers to the distance that the light can illuminate an object to the equivalent brightness of a full moon on a clear night. I am using this light with a drop in LED and reflector that provides 300 lumens for over 2 hours and a beam without all of the artifacts of the original Maglite beam. Be careful about Alkaline Batteries! They do leak. I replace them at least twice a year when I move the clock forward or back to adjust for daylight savings time. ... show more

If you're searching for a MagLite, you probably have a pretty good idea of the reputation the brand has. They make solid, reliable products that for many years were the gold standard in heavy duty flashlights. If you're less familiar with the name, know that Maglite has been making flashlights for a long time and they've always been very reliable and high quality. That said...I was pretty disappointed with this purchase. Despite being one of the largest Maglite makes with 6 D cell batteries, it's simply not nearly as bright as some other options out there. This model uses a regular incandescent bulb which is simply not as bright or reliable as some alternatives. There are other Maglite models with Xenon bulbs, LED bulbs, etc., as well as any number of off-brand competitors. Unfortunately, this model simply isn't as good. (As a flashlight, anyway. I'm sure some people would love the fact that with six D-cell batteries it does make a decent club...But still, it's incandescent, and that bulb is going to break if you actually hit anything with it, so you'd STILL be better off with an LED.) In short, this might just be an area where cheaper options are actually better all around. In their defense, if you dig in to the specs on this flashlight, Maglite is pretty open and as far as I can tell accurate. This flashlight is rated at 378m range, 178 lumens, and 11 hours battery life. However, the Maglite 3 Cell LED flashlight is rated at 412m range, with 168 lumens, and a whopping 80 hours battery life. Additionally, the peak brightness of the LED light is almost double the 6 cell incandescent. So unless you're in a laboratory testing Lumen ratings, real world performance is better across the board on the LED. So in short, if you have some very specific use case that requires an ordinary incandescent build, this is a solid choice, for almost every typical user looking for a durable super bright flashlight, there are better options. ... show more
