I already knew from some time ago that I wanted to do something about the ugly "almond-colored" fiberglass bathtub/shower combo fixtures in both bathrooms of my otherwise fully-remodeled bright white (with light gray flooring) recently-bought home. I explored options for replacing them. Quotes for contractors to come in and do the work at, say, The Home Depot would have run me about $5,000+ for the tubs alone (not including the walls)! I previously had heard about an option for refinishing them with an epoxy of sorts so I tried to find out more about that. I finally discovered some refinishing kits online through various retailers. Through researching and considering the best product in terms of favorable reviews as well as price, I finally settled on Magic Tub & Tile. The prep work took at least a day or two of my spare time for each tub/shower. Each kit is supposed to cover between about 75-100 square feet (with that area having two coats). I calculated that I had about ~89 sq. ft. surface area for each of the two fixtures so I bought two kits. There is a huge laundry list of other items that you need to have for the rest of the supplies on the list, which is something that I wished that they would have included on this product page somewhere so that I could have had everything offhand when the product arrived and just set to work. One of the reviews states that you should actually wait well over an hour after mixing the activator in with the base paint. I highly recommend doing this as well. The viscosity of the mixture is so thin and runny that, no matter the verticality of the surface you're applying it to and how skilled at painting you think you are, you will definitely have a lot of drips throughout the process. It is handy to keep a clean rag to wipe up spills like the video states. Also, you should keep a can of lacquer thinner on standby as well. I finished the first tub and, when I was painting the second one, I decided to first wait just a little longer after I mixed in the activator before starting to apply the first coat. although it gave me a less runny and slightly richer consistency that made applying it a lot better (at least initially), when I was a ways into the second coat, I really started to worry that I would run out before finishing (this is because it was laying on thicker). Sure enough, I ran out of product with roughly 15% of the surface unfinished with the second coat! I quickly ordered another can later that night to be sent out two-day shipping with a quick Amazon Prime trial (which I don't remember if I ended up needing) because this stuff is supposed to fully cure and be ready for use within 72 hours (3 days)! I bought yet another paint brush (this stuff will destroy your brushes even if you soak them in paint thinner to try and remove it) and got back to work the same day the third kit arrived. Well, of course I had plenty for coverage for the rest of the second tub and then a lot extra to apply better coverage to the rest (a third coat in some places). I then prepped the original first tub again with some TSP to do some touching up there as well. I had probably somewhat around a half a can left over after I was all done and could finally pretty much say like the instructions state that I am "satisfied with coverage." It seems like this finish will last a while and both tubs look beautiful! Every time I take a shower I can just admire how bright and shiny white they look. It's really satisfying. After everything was said and done I probably spent around $175 for the three kits and all the supplies that I didn't already have offhand - Much better than the many thousands of dollars! I still have the leftover can of product in the freezer. Does anyone know if I take it out and keep the lid on it, will it have the same shelf life as "normal paint" if I keep it sealed? This is a good product. It's important that the temperature is warm (75-80 degrees minimum) or the product will run and will take a long time to dry. We refinished our shower unit about 5 months ago and just did our tub/shower combo this week. We were covering the old 70's Harvest Gold fixtures so needed to do 4 coats for total coverage. Love the new modern look to our bathrooms. NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NON-RETURNABLE due to hazmat restrictions. So take care in ordering extra packages. ... show more

    • Ruined my sink, have to buy a new vanity.

I followed the instructions (and allowed extra drying time between coats). It stated to mix the two elements for at least 60 minutes before using. I left it alone for 120 minutes and followed drying time (plus several more hours in between). The product never hardened and cured once it was applied. It was applied on a bathroom sink. This picture is taken 9 days after application. After 9 days, we decided we're buying a new vanity anyway and started placing items on the sink (small bathroom bag, cell phone, hand towel, water bottle). As you can see, these relatively light objects just damaged the paint job after waiting 9 days. Preparation was taken to prepare the surface, clean it, sanded it, cleaned it again and the paint still bubbled and never cured. Had a bunch of porcelain chipped off of the tub on the main floor. I also wanted to bring it up to date on color (it was an almond color). Bought this and figured it was worth a shot. Holy smokes my bathtub looks new now! It was a bit of a pain for prep, and to paint but wow! I did a thin first coat in even, same direction strokes (like the directions told me to). It required two coats because of this, but totally worth the extra effort. Seriously best $48 spent. It took less than half of the can to do two coats on the tub. 5/5 stars folks. ... show more

    • Hardest project I ever took on.

I have just finished the 4th coat on my old bathtub and it is finally looking good. I did extreme preparation including power sanding, cleaning with scotch bright pads, and hand sanding, re-cleaning, two days of drying, etc before beginning the painting. Unfortunately the weather changed to humid while I was doing this which I am sure made drying time much larger. I do have to say that putting the paint and brush into the freezer between coats worked well, but would warn that it takes much more than an hour out of the freezer before using the paint again if you want it to adhere with subsequent coats. I also found that warming the tub slightly with hair dryer helped with recoating. I don't know that this product is much different than the Rustoleum, which is about half the cost. The coverage was very good. I still have half left after four coats and waiting to make sure that I do not need to coat again. I must say that I would never do this again. I was fortunate to have the time and the ability to live without the tub for a week or so. It is a long, difficult process. However, this was a 75 year old tub (one year older than me) which had had a lot of abuse through the years. It will not look perfect, but it is a dramatic improvement.
