  • Great tool for the money. Great tool for the money.
Great little axe for the money. Has that tactical look, which I guess is cool. Mine hangs off my backpack in an old flashlight loop I have. It's very light in the handle and heavy in the axe head, which makes it swing hard and chop solid. I took it out and chopped some small pine trees and it tore right through them without any dulling, although the black coating did wear a little bit and there is some scratching. So if cosmetic appearance is more important than functionality then this isn't for you, or you just shouldn't use it. But if you need a cheap, useful tool then it's great. All in all a great tomahawk for camping and general duty. The attached photos are after the first days use. ... show more

  • Behold! The modern age battle axe!!!
My hopes were high after a couple of video reviews and all the other reviews on this product... And i must say it doesn't disappoint... The M48 Hawk is a perfect weapon or tool, based on how you intend to use it... Well balanced and just the right length to wield either with one arm or two... Good gripping surface and comes with a provision to loop a paracord for securing it well... The blade is a wicked sick design as it has a good head to toe ratio and the rear guard doesn't disappoint one bit... The actual cutting edge is quite sharp... The butt is not sharp but good enuf to pierce any soft objects... Sheath is also reasonably good but could have been better in terms of perfect fitting... For a comparison, check the cold steel trench hawk's plastic sheath... However, this is but a minor setback, if one considers it so... Overall i have thoroughly enjoyed wielding this blade and scaring the living daylights out of my family and friends, who, after initial apprehensions have begun to like it themselves... Thoroughly recommended for campers/trekkers and adventure enthusiasts... Or even for someone who just loves wicked blades with skulls engraved on them :D Special mention to the one day delivery by Jalic.Inc... Truly appreciated... ... show more

  • UC stepping their game up
I purchased the US M48 out of curiosity. It had good reviews, something that I'm not familiar seeing on United cutlery products, I've bought some of their stuff in the past to see what it was all about. Anyway! Moving on, I have a few other hawks, I have the SOG fasthawk, and the GG&G Battle, so something at the top and bottom end of this scale. I must say that the M48 is a nice tool, granted not as nice as my GG&G, but it didn't cost me $250 either. I went out trekking this weekend and as far as people complaining about the handle breaking under the third screw, I have to say there must be bad batches. I worked my blade this weekend, certainly past the point of breaking a handle if it were going to break under normal to failrly harsher than normal conditions. The black coat on the blade doesn't seem to be the best, as I've rubbed off a fair portion of it just over a weekend of testing use. However with good blade care this blade will last. It throws better than my fasthawk if thats what you're in to, and even in an attempt to test those broken handle reviews I even chopped down a small tree with it, around 10 inches in diameter....I know this isn't what a hawk is for, I'm aware, but I set out to break this thing...and I failed. The balance is great, the handle is eh... but functional, I did a paracord wrap on mine to help with gripability if you will. I love the fact that this thing whistles when flying through the air! On a scale using a functionality to cost ratio comparing these 2 hawks, I would rate this M48 as a solid 8. My GG&G is my favorite, but I'm afraid to have too much fun with it since it cost so much. This is a solid hawk, that was cheap, so If I throw it and miss my target and lose it...no biggy easily replaced at $30. I carry it with me more than my battle hawk now. ... show more

  • Pretty, sharp, pokey toy
I ordered this for my emergency kit to keep in my car. I already have a small hand axe but, it's way too small to really cut anything substantial. I also have a nice sized rock hammer and while it's good for digging into the ground and crushing rock, it's not very practical for a survival situation. Now I have the M48 Hawk and it's a really wonderful tool for my kit bag. 1st - while it is a small, personal axe; the handle is long enough to use with two hands to really get some power into the swing to be able to dig into or take down some decent diameter firewood. 2nd - the pick on the back allows for entrenching like my rock hammer but, I am able to cut and entrench in one tool. Yes, I know, the back edge is more for personal defense and breaching, however, it is good to be able to dig a water channel around your camping site so you don't get wet or dig for water in an old river bed as well. 3rd - the nylon handle makes it quite a bit lighter overall and with it being so blade heavy, you really get some power on the down stroke, kind of like you get with a kukri. 4th - since the blade is stainless, I'm very much hoping I will be able to keep it in my car and not have to worry about rust spots from condensation from temperature fluctuations. Overall, a very good investment in camping, emergency survival equipment. ... show more

  • Well made, amazing tomahawk!
I bought this for a friend as a surprise but had it shipped to my house first to handle it and make sure I wasn't sending something cheap that would break easily or just plain looked like it came from a quarter machine. This tomahawk is amazing! You can tell from handling that the handle is very sturdy and the whole thing is very solid. Its not full tang but seems very strong never the less. I think the over all aesthetic design is beastly, you just want to throw it and bash things. Fun to look at and even better to hold. The center of mass is great, making this easy to maneuver. Choking up high on the handle makes easy work of fine/ close cuts or for making kindle shavings. This would be great for camping as well as throwing! And the blade is sharp right out of the sheath; I easily sliced my thumb taking it out the first time-I was so impressed with the edge I wasn't even angry I got cut. I won't be hesitating to purchase another one for myself. ... show more

  • TOMAHAWSOME
I had a few choices when I purchaced my Tomahawk. I saw the picture of the M-48 Hawk and went with it. It came in the mail and I dont think I have ever been so excited to get a package. I opened it and gazed upon the awsomeness of the M-48 Hawk. It isnt an ornamental Tomahawk by any chance. Its solid and feels good in your hand. I felt like I could take on anything. The finish on the tomahawk added to its perfection, nice and dark, black , and it makes the metal smooth. I threw it and it stuck the first throw, really, really, awsome. I Thank the good people of United Cutlery for making such a fine product. I will enjoy it for a long, long time. THANK YOU. David B. Hughes Also, I really love the skull on the hawk, it just made me love it even more. tHE PRICE WAS SOOOO CHEAP i REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A CHEAP PEICE OF CRAP, I was wrong. Its sturdy and durable, ive used mine extensively and it still looks new. ... show more

  • Light weight Light weight
Compared to my trench hawk the M48 is a light weight. That just happens to be just what I was looking for. A light smaller hawk to be the alpha to the beta condor jungle bowie. Both are not heavy but nimble and work well together. My other combination is the cold steel trench hawk and cold steel chaos tanto. The weight really goes up with those two. But back to this hawk. I would not say it is for heavy abuse like breaking bricks and tearing down steel vault doors. Jumping buildings in a single bound and all the other superman stuff some people try to put it through. You know you guys, The ones that use a nice katana to cut a tree down....or a cheap katana,,,dude,,,get an ax or buy a saw, GEESH. Use the items for what they are intended for and if you need a crowbar...well, that is why they make crowbars. In my opinion this is a light weight defensive tool. It is nowhere in the ugly beast category the cold steel trench hawk is in. That trench hawk is tough as it looks, wicked mean looking, and will hold up to much more abuse the m48 would. And for about the same price. All I am saying is if you pick the tool for the job, you will be much happier and not writing unhappy reviews. The fit and finish on this is good to very good. It is sharp but could be sharper and the grip could use some improvement. But those things I can fix and the price is right. It is a fast striker and leaves a mark. So far seems tough enough for my purpose. So 5 stars it is and if you decide to buy one, it would make a fine addition to your tool box. Here is a follow up. I covered the haft in that non slip sand paper like stuff they use for stairs. It feels much better. For my cold steel african walking stick I bought some cane tips. I had some left over and stuck on one the end. It went on snug and helps with weapon retention. ... show more

  • Sweet Hawk
I bought this Tomahawk after seeing it on a random ad online. Did some price shopping and was pleased to find it on Amazon. I would recommend this Hawk for someone who likes to mess around and mix work with pleasure. The spike on the back is seriously wicked and works well for self defense or stabbing/lifting items. The blade comes plenty sharp and the shape is very well designed. I like the handle molding because 3/4 of the way up it has small ribs so you can hold the Hawk just under the blade or down low without slipping. It's not a full size ax, so you need to realize that right off the bat. It's limited, but suites it's purpose rather well for the tasks it's designed for. I've thrown this Hawk repetitively and without mercy, chopped with it, sliced with it, and stabbed with it. As mentioned in the title, this is one sweet Tomahawk. The blade and spike have both held their edge like a champ. ... show more
