  • Fills a very narrow need for hiking stick, brush cutting and minimal animal protection.
It is true that head attachment is too weak for multiple strong chopping blows, but you can drill them out with larger bolts, hence 4 stars. I like this stick because of it small, lightweight size for hiking man made trails. In a mixed hiking group of strangers, the weapon sized head might draw unwanted attention alone, in the middle of the woods. Group hikes and Rambo don't always mix well. I am 5'10" and the stick is too short for me to grip the provided shaft hand hold, and gripping this by the larger axe head gives me less control and might be uncomfortable in a long 2 hour hike. Overall, I like design and weight, but after handling it, I question how effective it would be in a sneak small black bear animal attack when there is no time to draw back and stop a charging or jumping animal. This would be better for snakes and crawling threats and hacking thru brush. Sheath knives and a hiking partner are a better first line of defense. But this remains for me, a cool tool ! ... show more

  • Good, for what it is
I've not yet had a reason to use it, but I can tell the crafting is top notch. The very ends of the blade aren't that sharp (first thing I check) the weight balance though is fantastic. The only thing I'd change is the grip, if you're not careful it can slide out pretty well, I'll be making a slight modification. Otherwise, fantastic. Hoping this gets to the company though, make the same without the axe head, just the hammerhead, for us city-folk, I love this, but I can't take it out. ... show more

It's 3 to 4 inches short to be comfortable walking/hiking staff. That said its a very well made and sturdy, and light weight battle axe !! Thanks

  • A pleasant surprise ...
I've been a martial artist for over 40 years. Made the move from hand-to-hand to weapons about 30 years ago. So you can trust me when I say this walking axe is well made, sturdy, well balanced and razor sharp. I ran through a couple kama kattas with it and it actually worked out better than a kama. Resting the shaft against my forearm through strikes and slashes, then letting it shoot out the extra 2 feet mid-strike like a tonfa, added a new depth to the ferocity and potential destructive force of each form. The slight flex of the shaft allows even greater speed, as it creates a mild whipping motion, amplifying the speed and force of swinging blows. It's my new go-to for romps in the deep, dark woods as well as night time strolls in the big, bad city. I reccomend it. Big time. ... show more

  • An Interesting Concept That Needs Improvement
First and foremost, this is not a heavy duty axe built for clearing land or even for long term log splitting for the fireplace. The three screw tang doesn't seem strong enough, though in fairness, I can't state that as a fact. The handle also appears to be somewhat flimsy for such work. However, the attachment seems secure enough for occasional serious use such as trail marking and brush clearance. As implied in it's advertising, it's a walking stick that can be used as a weapon, and it could be quite useful in this regard. The axe is front heavy and can be swung with great force. However, it would be a much better weapon if the axe blade curved upward as well as downward and the point on the other end fully sharpened as in the line of one handed axes produced by this company. Such a version would be a true mini-poleax and would sell very well, even with the necessary uptick in price, as long as it's not excessive. And, adding a steel spike and ferrule to the bottom end would make it a much better walking stick. A good idea that can be developed into a great one. ... show more

  • Never regretted this purchase
I employed this axe as a part of my camping equipment 2 years ago, and have had nothing but great results. It has become my go-to for every campfire I've had since. Not only does it split wood really well, but I also use it as a fire tool to move burning logs around. It doesn't burn, melt, or warp under the heat. I cannot count the number of times ive whipped this bad boy out to make easy work of a bundle of firewood, but I can say that it is still solid after 2 years. It is so much a part of my camping essentials I've nicknamed it Brutus. Oh, and it works great to run off racoons and nosy neighbors and too. ... show more

  • Understand what it really is
This is modern version of a ciupaga, a traditional shepherds tool. It is not a Viking axe ,two handed chopping axe or hatchet! It was intended to be used as a walking stick and herding guide plus a weapon against predators and rustlers. The light weight head is shaped so that both thrusting and dragging as well as swinging are possible with one hand. The walking stick grip acts as stabilizer to keep the blade leading. The partial tang adds strength at the point where most axes fail, just below the eye. On the negative side the clever sheath does not stay closed but adding a rubber band cures that. The shaft is too thin for a comfortable grip and the rubber end will wear off in a couple miles. By adding a grip from a bicycle and tip from a crutch, this has become my favorite woods hiking tool. ... show more
