As the subject implies, I'm new to midi controllers but not to making music in general. I used to use Fruity Loops back in the day to make simple and fun electronic music and decided to give it a shot again. Back then I only used a PC but now I've decided to include a midi controller to see what I can come up with. So this is a hobby for me at this time. I have no other midi controller experience but what I can say is that the hardware seems to be high quality. Keys, buttons, knobs, etc all seem good. No complaints. Now the firmware side of things is where it gets a little tricky. The time it takes to create an account, update firmware (correctly), setup MPC Beats, setup Mlok licenses, etc is kinda of a pain to be honest. And then I think I had to do something with presets if I recall. I had to follow a youtube video to get the hang of things. M-Audio website and instructions were pretty good it just took a little time. But once I was up and running, MPC Beats (the included free DAW) worked just ok. MPC Beats is not intuitive. I realize this is a midi controller review, but MPC Beats is advertised as the included free DAW so I might as well touch on this. MPC Beats is confusing when you are ready to build a song. Making beats and recording is fairly intuitive, but assembling them into a coherent song is very hard in my opinion. The relationship between tracks, sequences, and programs is confusing. I ended up creating a really cool beat and was unable to actually hear one of the warm pads I was using. The song editor screen was buggy and not intuitive. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me, so I ended up extracting the audio for each sound into separate audio clips and inserting into FL Studio. Why am I bringing this up? I ended up paying a little extra for FL Studio software so I could actually create songs easily instead of MPC Beats, so you may or may not find that MPC Beats actually provides value to the package sale. Overall: Controller itself seems nice, but included MPC Beats is confusing. If you are like me and don't like MPC beats for actual song creation, then expect to pay extra for another DAW. ... show more

    • Good controller with a fatal flaw
This thing is a good all in one controller, especially for the price, whether you're pressed for desk space or traveling, it's a solid, and in many ways, better, option when put against the classic akai mini. And it can easily serve as your only midi device, It doesn't have aftertouch though, if that's a deal-breaker you're gonna have to keep looking. There's one major design flaw however: The screen displaying the controller's settings is an OLED display, not an LCD, and if you know your hardware, you know OLEDs suffer from burn in. Since the controller doesn't have any way to turn it off, and the screen is always on when powered, you'll have to unplug it when not in use if you want to preserve the screen. This only delays the inevitable however, one day that screen WILL become unusable, so hopefully you'll have the controller's functions memorized by then. And no, no amount of warranty replacements will fix that problem either if they send the same model with the same design flaw. Also, the knob directly under the display will likely block your view of the screen if you're not standing directly over it. Amazing. That said, if you can live with that I do recommend it as a midi controller as its otherwise great value. ... show more

This was a poor quality keyboard!!!! Some keys worked and others did not work at all, so I returned it. I would not recommend this keyboard.

    • M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini - the keys feel toy-ish. Good controls. Pads are decent. 32 keys.
Spoiler: It wasn't my favorite of those I tested. I returned the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini. DISCLAIMER: I did not test any bundled software. This review is primarily an "out of the box", plug-and-play test. The vast majority of the playing, looping and configuration was in Garageband for iPad and a little in Logic Pro X for iPad. I watched a lot of reviews on YT and decided to try them for myself. I wasn't sure which controller would work best for me. I am relatively new to the DAW/MIDI controller world. I have dabbled in piano and synth for decades, but am definitely not an expert. Below is my take on the Oxygen Pro Mini. Devices tested (for comparison): ⦁ Arturia Minilab 3 ⦁ M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini - THE DEVICE BEING REVIEWED ⦁ Akai MPK Mini Plus ⦁ Akai MPK Mini Play mk3 Things I liked about the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini: ⦁ Oxygen Pro Mini has 4 faders and 4 regular knobs. That's a good amount of controls to assign in your DAW. ⦁ Has physical pitch and mod "wheels". They worked as expected. ⦁ Discreet transport control knobs. I definitely prefer discreet to "shared" controls (eg. a pad is also a play button) ⦁ Lots of lighted buttons when they are "active". the red buttons make an actual "click" when pressed. I like that. Some may hate it. ⦁ 32 keys. Definitely better than 25, but not quite 37. At least 32 gives you a little more room, but go minimal (25) or go full 3 octaves (37), in my opinion. 32 is probably an unecessary middle ground. ⦁ Good amount of function labels on the face of the device as compared to the Arturia. This made it easier to use a "shift" keypress and the clearly labeled button/key to select a parameter. Labels make it easier to remember what function is where. Things I DISliked about the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini: ⦁ key feel was my least favorite of all I tested. They "clacked" pretty loudy and felt very light and thin. Trying to play smooth, melodic key parts was difficult for me. I didn't adjust the velocity. Maybe that would have helped. By far the worst key feel of the 4 controllers I tested. ⦁ MIDI Out only, requires a dongle. (sold separately). ⦁ The preset for Garageband didn't map completely to iPad OS. None of the controllers I tested did, so this isn't really a dig on the M-Audio specifically. ⦁ The pads were just ok. Better than the Arturia, but not as good as Akai pads. They weren't as sloppy/wobbly at the edges and I didn't notice nearly as many "accidental double-taps" as I did with the Minilab 3. The Akai pads just feel the best in my opinion. Overall build quality - M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini: Just OK. The faders had a little slop. As stated previously, the keys do not feel good. The pads were pretty good, but not as good as Akai.
