  • A LITTLE BRIGHT BUT GOOD DESKTOP MONITORS FOR THE PRICE!
Size: 3-inch Woofer Style: Standalone Speakers
A little bit about me, if you have looked at any of my previous reviews (or if not) you will find out that I dabble in music production (particularly 90s east coast drum style Hip Hop, down-tempo Electronic, a lil dance styles etc) and also that I am into gaming (online and offline PC gaming all the way). Well the M Audio AV 32's happen to meet these two areas of interests very well in my opinion and I'll explain why, while also addressing some of their criticisms: 1) I also own a pair of the M Audio AV 40 s (the old 20 watt version) which have been replaced by the AV 42 speakers, and many people complained about the bass output and made similar comments about how they weren't good for Hip Hop, etc. First and foremost these are (admittedly low price) monitor speakers, they are not supposed to have overwhelming bass, like most computer speaker 5.1 sets with sub-woofers come with, I actually replaced my old Logitech 5.1 system with the AV 32's because while the bass did sound good (still does) on the Logitech's, I got a little tired of the "boom-i-ness" while gaming, and wanted speakers with more clarity, also wanted speakers that took up less desk space than the 5 speakers plus a subwoofer I had been using. 2) For gaming as another user has mentioned these are great, and actually provide more clarity and direction awareness than the 5.1 speaker system I had been using. I think this is due to the fact that they have much flatter frequency response than most computer speakers allowing you to hear things like footsteps from enemies and sound effects clearer, while also maintaining the boom of sound effects like explosion and gunshots ( you do lose some of the deep bass end w/o having a subwoofer). 3) Music Production - For basic recording and mixing already completed or near completed tracks, I would say that these speakers are adequate, but the rule for music mixing still applies, A) any ported speaker (period) distorts the bass, B) For Hip Hop, Dance, and other bass heavy styles more woofer (size not sub) is definitely better. C) Always use a good pair of cans (headphones) as your final reference check. - That being said, yes these are not high end Tannoy or KRK monitors like I've used and seen at some studios, but if you combine them with some good headphones like Audio Technica ATH M40's or 50's and I think you can do some basic beat-making with them, and if you are using computer speakers to do that invest in these or the AV 42 right now, do you and your mixes a favor. 4) As far as hooking them up to a Flatscreen "Smart" tv and poor sound quality I can't speak to as another user has noted, but you probably would need some kind of basic EQ or "middle- man" device to get the best sound out of these because most standard audio out of flatscreen TVs is poor anyways, and like I said these speakers are "flatter" than what most people who are used to using computer speakers are used, although like I said they are a little brighter on the mid- high end than the AV 40's ! Other Monitor Speakers of interest for Music Productions: 1) Tannoy Reveal 402 Studio Monitor 2)JBL LSR305 Studio Monitor 3) And of couse! - KRK RP5G3-NA Rokit 5 Generation 3 Powered Studio Monitor ... show more

  • Amazing sound, minimal desktop footprint
Size: 4-inch Woofer Style: Standalone Speakers
Really happy with these speakers. I got a recommendation from a few friends who are house DJs, and these don't disappoint. Currently using them in my office setup just hooked in directly to my Macbook, and the sound quality is phenomenal. --- 7/30/2017 Update: I've had these speakers for over a year now, and I'm a huge fan. Highly recommend. Here's the skinny: I've gotten into DJ'ing the last few years (at this point mostly just recording sets on my Traktor S2 and sharing on Soundcloud), so I wanted to find a good set of speakers that I could take with me if I wanted to go DJ a house party. But, my main use for these is in my home office (I work remotely), and as desktop computer speakers, they really shine too. I tend to play a lot of electronic (EDM, deep house, ambient), rap and hip hop, and modern pop/electronic. When I'm not wearing my noise-canceling headphones, I'm blasting the music on these speakers. The sound is REALLY good. I'm speaking as a person with audio production experience, and also experience wiring and installing car stereo systems (the kind with 10s and 12s in the back...and 600W amps and 1GW capacitors). These speakers aren't going to get a whole house bumping exactly, but they will get a whole room or floor bumping. Lows are pretty solid for a system without a subwoofer, mids are great, and the highs are crystal clear. Best part is that they have their own analog volume control on the speakers, so you can adjust both via the digital input (on your computer), and on the speaker itself. ... show more

  • Good Fidelity for the Money
Size: 3-inch Woofer Style: Standalone Speakers
We needed higher quality desktop audio speakers to move around the house to listen to music or audio books/talks or movies generally hooked to a laptop of iPhone. We needed enough power to overcome the sound of the dishwasher if we were doing chores, but enough sensitivity that we could enjoy an evening symphony while relaxing on the couch. We knew we needed something better than the standard computer desktop speakers that sound tinny or plasticky--but hoped to keep it under $100. After reading several reviews, it seemed like the M-Audio AV32 might work so we ordered them. Overall, I would say we are pleased with the purchase, We move these around a lot so the compact size is a plus, but they are big enough and sturdy enough to produce some decent bass sound. The Mid to high notes are almost too accurate; the first song I played I could clearly hear how the vocal harmonies were coming in a tick too late in the original recording, something I would not have discerned in my old JBL tweeter/woofer computer combo. The first time I heard the clear mids and highs I understood why these are marketed as studio monitors--something designed for sound accuracy/fidelity. So, the accuracy was truly noticeable--not that I am sound engineer or anything. So, mids and highs sound good--the only thing I miss from my old JBL tweeter and subwoofer is the truly deep bass. These M-Audio's produce decent bass. Strange, but sometimes the bass can be quite loud in these speakers particularly if they have a solid wall behind the speakers--but the effect is LOUDNESS not DEPTH. I miss the depth of a true subwoofer--hence the 4, not 5 in my rating. But, overall, I am glad for the purchase. It's fun to listen to such accurate sound reproduction. My baroque music while making Sunday lunch is charming and the church related talks (human speech) are crystal clear with no distortion almost to the top volume. 10 watts won't make a dance party happen, but the wattage fills my average living room quite nicely, whether playing quietly for a dinner party, or up louder while I am listening to a talk while I get the chores done. If you are looking to upgrade from average computer desktop speakers these will be a SOLID step up and quite enjoyable, but perhaps for $30 bucks more you might get more bass depth out of something. ... show more
