Overview - The item reviewed is a set of 24 Hickory 5A drumsticks (12 pairs) painted black. Positives - Buying in bulk at this price point is a great value to provide plenty of extra/backup sticks. - The sticks are heavy enough to provide good response yet balanced and long to be comfortable to use for long periods of time. - Time will tell how long the black coating will last, but so far it is standing up to sweaty hands with fairly good grip. - The sticks are straight, balanced and roll smoothly. Time will also tell if this humid environment causes any warping or grain sprout. Negatives - In a comparison to expensive, professional sticks, these are a bit lighter and smaller than other brands. - The black coating makes it hard to confirm if they are truly Hickory, and what grade of Hickory. Sanding would help reveal, but the under-staining from the coating may still impair the grain darkness. In Conclusion - Purchasing the sticks in this bulk package is a good value at this price. I ordered these drum sticks (pack of 6 / 3 pairs) so I could rent a studio space and smash drums - just needed drum sticks for that. I'm not a professional but I used to own a set of drums 20+ years ago and had some training back then. I know some basics and purchased a few sets of drum sticks back then. The ones I've owned before had a super clean look to them. These drum sticks have a bit of a sloppy paint job with the tips getting some paint (or whatever they used) on it randomly and the other two had some missing on the stick itself. They feel fine in the hand and when I practiced a little I didn't notice anything off about them. In the photos of the product, you can see they individually wrapped each set of drum sticks with a piece of cardboard I guess to make sure they don't move around in the package and to give a nice presentation. That cardboard was not present with my drum sticks. I received 6 loose drum sticks in the included bag which has a strange texture to it (not soft feeling / little stiff). I dropped my rating to 4. This is due to the presentation of the sticks/quality and the lack of the cardboard as shown in the photos. As for value, it's close to what you'll find with other sticks but I'd imagine you could find identical quality for closer to the $10 range. The sticks are very light weight, and are easy to use. There was a very slight smell from the black lacquer but went away upon airing out of the bag. I played some rolls, and they bounce well, on both ends. For kicks, I used the fat end as well. The cost for 3 pairs is really excellent.

I use a 5A weight Hickory, Vic Firth stick. Same tips. Wood. In testing these out, I noticed that the sound of the drums were "lighter" than my normal Vic Firth sticks. They did feel just a tad bit lighter than my Vic Firth sticks. All fairness, these aren't bad sticks. If you like the "close-to-same" weight, but want a lighter sound from the drums because you are playing in a venue where you can't play as loud, these sticks may be the way to go. I am reluctant to start replacing my current sticks with using these. Especially for recording purposes. ... show more
