  • Great intro lyre - take your time with tuning
This little lyre sounds great! I'm a guitar player but been wanting to dabble in other stringed instruments so I decided to spring for this. I read some of the reviews and a lot of people complained about tuning and breaking strings and what not. You must take your time. All stringed instruments need a lot of tuning and adjustment at first. Yes, you will tune all the strings and they will be out of tune by the time you get to the other side. That's normal. It will probably take at least an hour of constant retuning at first as the strings stretch out and the lyre gets acclimated to your climate. You only need to barely turn the wrench to tune it - if you crank it you're going to break the strings. Be slow and patient. As someone who can read music, I figured the little book of songs they had in the package would at least have standard notation but it's a weird lyre tablature - not a fan personally, but you can easily find actual sheet music for lyre online and will likely be easier to read since this lyre is only in the key of C - no need to worry about sharps and flats on the notation. That being said, you totally can tune the lyre differently if you want to play in another key. You could make all your F's sharp to play in G major/E minor for example. It's kind of weird to hold, but I'm not completely used to it yet. It's far easier to pick up and play something than guitar, especially if you understand what notes are in the chords of the C major scale. Seems like a decent instrument for the price and it looks nice too! ... show more

  • Beautiful, rich sound
This lyre is made well, sturdy and smooth, and emits a very pretty sound. I am no musician, but simply an amateur with an ear for melody. Some reviews mentioned difficulty with tuning, but I did not experience that issue, it seems to tune well. It's aesthetically very attractive. I highly recommend if you are in the market for a perfectly-sized, well-made, reasonably-priced lyre. ... show more

  • Love my lyre
First everything functions as designed. My only complaint is that the holes at the bottom where the strings are fed through during the stringing of the instrument are not drilled evenly and are misaligned. I also would have loved to had seen this area with a brass plate which the string eyes could have rested on instead of lying directly upon the wood on the back of the harp. This doesn’t take away from the harp it’s just a personal preference I have understanding the damage string eyes can inflict on bare wood even wood as dense as mahogany. I shall fashion myself one from brass shim stock to eliminate any future damage to the area the eyes directly touch. The tuning pegs at the top are not consistently 90 degrees and some slightly lean however the spacing at the top is very consistent and provide ample space even for my large man hands. The maple bridge unfortunately has a very unsightly over sanded flat spot making the bridge look very unclean and out of place between the two different color wood finishes and it’s very apparent a mistake was made in the area. Now the sound quality I have no complaints with what so ever and definitely sounds very beautiful to play. The storage bag was very dirty and covered in lint and dust as well as the lyre itself but with a proper cleaning that’s resolved fairly easy. As with any stringed instruments it takes about two weeks of playing to get the strings to mature to the proper note retention and afterwards with normal playing stays tuned for an appreciative amount of time. Now for the price you can’t go wrong and it does play pleasantly I just wish the craftsmanship could have been better because this instrument does deserve a 5 star rating but I feel I scored it fairly based on what I received. With all this said yes I would buy this again and have the intention of purchasing the solid body lyre harp from aklot as well. I just wish the craftsmanship could have been on par as I stated this instrument deserves a 5 star rating, their production team just needs to be more consistent and careful. Hope this fair and honest review helps to make your decision to purchase this harp. ✌🏼 ... show more

  • Awesome buy!
The lyre sounds great and is exactly what I was wanting. I followed a review recommendation to gently press upwards on the strings from the bottom and working up to the top and stretch them out. Be careful if you do it. You can get a feel for a little pressure but not too much. Hard to describe. The lyre started holding its tuning very quickly from what I was expecting. I got a lap harp before that I had to keep re-tuning constantly until the strings stretched out, but gently stretching them out sped up the process dramatically. This is probably an issue for any lyre or harp though as new strings will naturally stretch. The sound quality is just what I wanted. There was a girl that reviewed this, the bowl design and the deer design. The strings on this have good spacing and I don't have any trouble plucking the strings. My hands are big and I'm glad I decided on this instead of a deer design. The open area is good to reach the strings I want to play with my left hand. I can reach all but the top 3 strings with it and I doubt the left hand would play those anyways. ... show more

  • A good value
The harp, like all wood instruments, is highly effected by the weather. Stay with it because it's a struggle to keep it in tune. Keep the tuner close by. When in tune, it's fun and relaxing to play.
