I picked up this castable sonar system to use as a portable alternative for those days when I am fishing from the shore or bank and don't have access to the megahertz high-quality plotter and dedicated finder setup on my main boat. To be completely blunt, the processing interface on this handheld unit is definitely a bit gimmicky and crude compared to full-scale marine electronics. It isn't going to map out hyper-detailed structural definition or perfect arches, but it baseline functions to let you know, "Is there maybe fish here? Yes, there may be fish in here." It saves you from blindly throwing lures into empty water all morning, which is exactly what I wanted it for. The physical portability is easily the best thing about the entire setup. The receiving monitor is pocket-sized and lightweight, fitting comfortably in one hand so you can easily manage your fishing rod with the other. The small wireless transducer pod is completely cordless, floating flat on the surface and transmitting data back smoothly without any tangled wires cluttering up your folding chair or bucket. While I wouldn't bother using this on an actual boat or a kayak where a permanent marine mount makes more sense, it is a handy gadget to toss into a mobile tackle bag for quick land-based outings. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this portable fish finder. I've always been curious about using one, but the cost of the larger name-brand units kept me from taking the plunge. This seemed like an affordable way to see what a fish finder could do, and for the average weekend angler, I think it strikes a nice balance between features and price. The packaging made a good first impression. Everything arrived neatly organized in a sturdy box with a molded insert that keeps all of the accessories in place. Even the lid uses small magnets to stay closed, making it easy to store everything together between fishing trips. (If you notice a film on the display in my photos, that's just the factory screen protector that I left on.) The handheld receiver is compact and lightweight, and it comes with a lanyard so you can keep it around your neck while fishing. The wireless sonar transmitter floats, and it's shaped like a little submarine. You can either cast it out with a fishing rod or towed behind a kayak or small boat. That flexibility makes it useful for a variety of fishing styles. Setup was straightforward. The menu system is simple to navigate, and it's easy to switch between feet and meters, Fahrenheit and Celsius, adjust the alarm settings, and choose between the different operating modes, including general, shallow water, and slope mode. Since I mostly fish neighborhood ponds and local lakes, the shallow water mode is the one I'll likely use most often. I have really enjoyed using this portable fish depth finder. It is small enough to bring along without taking up much room, but it still gives you a good amount of information while you are fishing. It shows the water depth, water temperature, fish icons, and the general location of fish under the water. It is helpful when fishing in an area you are not familiar with because it gives you a better idea of what is going on below the surface instead of just guessing. The menu takes a little exploring at first, but after that it is pretty simple to use. You can choose whether the readings show in feet or meters and switch the temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius. It also lets you change the alarm and pick the mode that works best for the area, including general, shallow water, and slope mode. I like that it can be adjusted for different fishing spots instead of using the same setup every time. The fish alarm is especially handy because it lets me focus on my pole without constantly checking the display. The screen has clear icons and is not too confusing to read. My only complaint is that I wish the screen could get a little brighter. It can be harder to see when the sun is shining directly on it, so I sometimes have to shade it with my hand. It is still usable, but a brighter screen would make it even better for daytime fishing. Overall, I really like this fish finder. It is portable, gives useful readings, and has enough settings to work for different types of fishing. Wow! A Fish finder you can use from lake-shore, or sea-shore, as well as your small lund boat, canoe, or kayak! This is so portable, just drop it into your pocket, and you have a fish finder for those days of fishing, so you can actually bring dinner home each time. If you happen to drop the screen monitor into the water, just quickly retrieve it to pull it back out and you're still ready to use, as it is water resistant, but not actualy water'proof,' as in being submerged for any length of time. The little yellow casting/sounding unit is completely waterproof though, as it is meant to be cast up to within 500 ft out, to bob around on the water's surface, so it can give you the depth finder reading and fish presence. The Instructions are very easy to follow, and before you know it, you'll be an expert. The Manual is very explicit, and not just a simple sheet of folded glossy paper. It's a proper book to study, with a troubleshooting section. I haven't used it yet, to determine it's accuracy, but I will follow up after I go fishing with it next month, although, with the tech built into it, I believe it will be VERY accurate. If you think of how many fish meals this will help you to have success with, it will pay for itself over and over again, so this is truly worth every penny. I can't hardly wait to get using it, but I must find water first, as I am in the desert, lol Honestly though, I am not far from a big lake, so I will be soon be fishing for my dinners with this wonderful, handy little fish finder. Love it!

Honestly, not very helpful. When it decides to start working, the best info available is the depth. The resolution of the image isn't very helpful in determining the height of fish, as there are only a few places on the screen where it can actually display a fish. The screen isn't very bright and the sun tends to wash it out. It cannot tell you if the ground is sloping, and just indicates that it is constantly flat. On the other hand, the temperature information is pretty useful, and the unit feels pretty durable. I wouldn't recommend casting it out as it is quite heavy and would splash and scare the fish.
