  • Fibromyalgia vs Lucid: An in-depth review
Note to reader: This is an in depth review. I hope it helps in your search. For about a year, I have been conducting online research on mattresses waiting for the day when we could finally purchase new mattresses. I concluded that Talalay latex would likely be the best since I have a severe case of fibromyalgia. We went to our local mattress store to try one out. The three layer wasn’t soft enough. The four layer was better but not “it.” However, anything was a vast improvement on our now 16 year old mattress with its his and her respective ditches. I planned to buy online, but out of curiosity I asked the clerk how much it cost. Good thing we both were lying down at the time. Over $3500! Online prices started around $1500, much better but still a crazy price to me as I would need to add a foundation, sheets, etc. and do that times two since my husband and I sleep in separate bedrooms out of physical necessity. I figured we needed to save at least $4,000 for both of us to get new mattresses, which I could not wrap my head, nor my budget around. Six months later, my body was screaming for a new mattress. One day, we stopped at a different mattress shop to try out a memory foam mattress. I preferred the feel of the memory foam to the latex. Again, I asked how much. Again, we were glad we were lying down. They were having a sale: Queen size reduced from $1800 to $1299. I calculated about $3000++ for both of us to get fully situated, which was still a crazy price. I returned home and started round two of research. I searched “mattress” and “fibromyalgia” to help narrow my search. I went to Amazon and found Lucid and reviewed all of their mattresses. I watched a YouTube video about the 14 inch gel foam memory mattress by Goodbeds.com (I also watched Goodbeds video reviews of competitors) and felt that the Lucid 14 inch gel memory foam was the standard by which to compare all others. I took Goodbeds test to help narrow down likely best mattresses for me, which included questions about health issues and specifically fibromyalgia. They generated a list of mattresses that would support a side sleeper with fibromyalgia. The Lucid 14 inch gel memory foam was one of their top recommendations for me. In the Goodbeds video, they described the top 5 inches of foam as “premium comfort materials.” And they gave the density for each layer. Layer 1: 5.3 lb Layer 2: 3 lb Layer 3: 1.6 lb Further research about density confirmed Goodbeds statement of “premium comfort materials. Out of curiosity I researched the competitor’s foam densities. T&N. Layer 1: 2.8. Layer 2: 1.8 Dream Foam: Layer 1: 4, Layer 2: 2.5, Layer 3: 1.8 Novabed, Casper, Nectar, Loom & Leaf, Ghost, etc. None came close to the density levels of the Lucid. None came close in price with prices starting at $800. Determining that quality and price couldn’t be beat, I ordered my Queen Lucid 14 inch gel memory foam mattress for under $500. As stated before I have a severe case of fibromyalgia, which means I am in pain 24/7. As stated before, the old mattress was greatly increasing my pain levels. I was waking up every 2-3 hours in pain. My hips and shoulders hurt greatly as I am a side sleeper. In the mornings, I was so stiff, that I needed to walk for at least 15-20 minutes to loosen up and to reduce the resultant pain spike. I was so tired by the end of my work day that I would be in bed by 6:00 or 7:00 pm. Needless to say, I was beyond excited to be getting a new mattress. However, my two main concerns were 1) firmness since there were a number of reviews who felt this particular mattress was firm m, and 2) off gassing as I am very sensitive to smells. Therefore, we bought my mattress first because if it was too firm or to smelly, my husband would take it as he doesn’t have issues with firmness or smells. The delivery day arrived. Like others have noted, the box it was in had has a hard cross country trip. It was a bit banged up, and the tape on the top had been fully slit. However, the mattress was still in the box and fully protected by the heavy duty plastic. The tool to cut it free was very useful. It was a bit cumbersome, but nothing two people couldn’t manage. Thankfully, my mattress had practically zero smell. My husband had to put his nose on the mattress to smell the off gassing. I just got the smallest of whiffs of off-gassing. It did not bother me at all and fully went away in a few hours. Finally, the mattress plumped up to 14 inches in 4 hours not the 24 hours some reviewers had experienced. Now the real test was to take place - Fibromyalgia vs Lucid! The winner? Lucid!!! My aching body feels like it has found a friend that fully understands how it feels and who wants to make it feel better. The mattress has the perfect balance of plush and support. Pain is not waking me up every 2 hours. My hips and shoulders do not ache. But most amazing of all is that when I get out of bed to start my day, I am not stiff AT. ALL.! I do not need to walk 15-20 minutes to loosen up. I figured the the overall stiffness was 100% fibromyalgia, but it wasn’t. In short, I am sleeping. I am also noticing that because I am better rested certain situations do not wipe me out like they used to. Finally, the memory foam keeps me at the right temperature. On my old mattress, I had to use a heated mattress pad because I was always cold, which increased my pain levels. The Lucid wins on so many levels: supportive comfort for a painful chronic illness, quality of materials, and price. ... show more

  • Too Dippy to provide good sleep
Size: Queen Style: Plush Pattern Name: Mattress Only
Update. It’s been about two weeks now. I’ve yet to sleep on it through the night. It’s ok so long as I don’t snuggle my husband. Then I get stuck in the middle and have to work harder to get back out. It’s actually firmed up a lot since that first week. But still not enough to stay comfortable in the middle. Still dips. I have to sleep on the edge of the mattress. So this is night two sleeping on it. First night was fine slept good but kept getting stuck in the middle of the bed with my husband unable to get out. Any time we tried to get close to one another and snuggle the bed would sink in low. Trying to get out made me feel like a flipped turtle. When we keep to our sides of the bed it’s fine. I purchased this mattress in the hopes of reducing my pain levels as my spine has issues in the lower lumbar. My previous mattress having been old and has dips and is painful to lay on for even a few minutes. Well I’m in pain after 8 hours of being in this bed. Not as severe as the other one would have left me in agony. But I’m still not thrilled. ... show more

Size: Queen Style: Plush Pattern Name: Mattress Only
This mattress is nice and thick. I'm a side sleeper and had to flip during the night because of pain. Not any more! It's soft and plush. The pain is almost gone when I sleep. I also don't get as hot. I'm sleeping better and through most of the night. Best part is, I got this on sale for Cyber Monday and saved alot of money vs buying a stupid expensive competitor. ... show more

  • reserved but pleased so far! purchased March 2012. Now 8/2013
We ordered this mattress last week, it was shipped from Commerce City, Colorado, to us here in Wichita, KS in two days (the ordering is what took so long, but the shipping was quick Thursday showed shipped and Friday it arrived). The box is huge! It was very heavy even for my hunky husband. The box was very damaged obviously. With something this large and heavy, it can't be avoided at all. However, it was obvious the mattress was well wrapped and just fine upon arrival. It was marked KING and LUCID all over the box and was obvious that it was the correct item. It had been raining here for the past week nonstop and I was worried if I wasn't home when it arrived that it would get soaked. However it was wrapped sooo well in plastic, I know I wouldn't have had anything to worry about. The UPS man heaved it into my garage for me on a dolly. It arrived in the morning around 1030 am (and it wasn't raining at that time). DH took the mattress box all the way to the bedroom, it was easier to do that than take the mattress out. It had two nylon straps he was able to grab to pull it. He put the mattress roll on the bed and popped the plastic it began to expand quickly. You could smell the "new paint" smell but it definitely was not overwhelming by any means. We had readied the windows and fan, but it wasn't necessary. The plastic wrap held the paint smell in so I know that it was sealed well. To me it just smelled new and after about a half hour you had to put your nose on the mattress to smell that "paint" smell at all. It was expanded almost to 14 inches tonight around 10 pm. The last few inches are taking the longest. But right away the mattress was expanded to about 8 to 10 inches (with in about 5 to 10 mins). It expands at different rates so one side of the bed was higher than the other at first, but it's evened out just fine. We had the mattress turned wrong as in upside down, as you want the plain cashmere side to be down, and the fancy stitched side that says, "cashmere" and "Lucid" stitched all over it upwards to the ceiling. ALSO, we had the foot and head sideways on the bed too, so it had to be turned one more direction to sit right on the bed. But you can figure all that out pretty quickly...lol Do it before it expands too much, it's much easier obviously. I put sheets on it and am sleeping on it tonight as I have no choice really, but I think in the morning it should be close to 14 inches. I have pictures and hopefully the video which you will be able to see. I do believe if you want to seriously consider memory foam this is a good way to go, I dont know about it's longevity yet. But the foam base it the largest out there- I looked at every single memory foam mattress that is being manufactured and that's not a joke. You need a big dense foam base for these beds. Also if you want to go the Tempurpedic route as far as denisty 5 lb density or 7 pound density, this is comparible. We laid on the Tempurpedic beds in the store and compared their composition to this bed. I might get a 6 lb 2 inch memory foam topper for it as I prefer it to be really firm. The Allura is 7 lbs and 5 lbs memory foam, the closest topper I could find was 6 pounds. It costs about $500 too. So even with this mattress and that mattress topper, I am still WAAAAAY under the cost of the Allura Tempurpedic which is almost $5000! We also tried all the other major name brands of memory foam. The other companies like Serta, or Sleep Innovations really don't compare. Their densities are much lower and the bases much shorter and in my opinion too small. I even looked at Bed in a Box (although a good company), their beds don't boast a higher density foam, and dont' have a deeper base, I believe they use 3 pounds or less for their memory foam. The Dynasty mattresses are a better buy here on Amazon if you are considering one of those. Just look at how the mattress is made and see for yourself. I called Dynasty and spoke to a very nice man and he answered all my questions as well. They go 1.5" on their 20 year warranty. Most companies I found don't list the density of their foam bases, so that's the only unknown. I couldn't even find that with Tempurpedic's mattresses. I think minimum for two regular sized adults (my husband 6 foot and 210) and I am 5'6 and pregnant (no need to go there) that 12 inches minimum is what you need. Anything else would not be adequate from what I read. I have been through 2 mattress on warranties in 4 years- from a different company and store (NOT THIS MATTRESS), so I am super paranoid. We aren't even trying to go warranty this last mattress as we don't even want to deal with it. The first time we did the warranty process was easy and we had it done with in a week, but it's just the trouble of hauling it around and taking pictures and being pregnant, I just dont have the energy. I just want a good nights sleep ;) So basically if you want a good memory foam, compare heights, densities and bases. Go from there. I am crossing my fingers that this thing will hold up through the years. I will try to update and answer questions if I remember. I really appreciated the folks who already wrote detailed reviews and one guy even put up a video on another LUCID I think. Oh and the warranty card was stuck right there to the mattress. It states the typical 1.5" sag, but there are no other stipulations about the 20 year warranty. Bed in a box is 1.25" and Tempurpedic is .75". So although they have LinenSpa beat there I still went with this mattress. I even called LinenSpa during regular business hours and someone answered the phone and answered my questions. Be back soon with more info. I really do hope this helps someone else out, even if you don't buy this brand, at least maybe it will educate you a little.
