I was honestly surprised by how compact this machine is. When I first took it out of the box I expected something much heavier, but it’s incredibly lightweight and easy to move around. If you don’t have a dedicated workshop or you need something that can be stored between projects, that’s a huge advantage. I could easily see someone keeping this on a shelf and bringing it out only when they want to engrave. Setup was much easier than I expected. Since the frame comes preassembled, there isn’t a pile of parts or hours of assembly involved. It was mostly a matter of attaching the laser module, plugging in the power and USB cables, setting the focus with the included focus block, and getting the software connected. Even if you’ve never owned a laser engraver before, the learning curve feels manageable. The included accessories are enough to get you started right away. It comes with safety glasses, the focus block, power supply, USB cable, wrench, and a small brush for cleaning. I appreciated that everything needed for the initial setup was already in the box. This is definitely a beginner-friendly machine. If you’ve been curious about laser engraving but didn’t want to invest in a large, expensive system, this is a great entry point. It gives you the opportunity to learn focusing, material settings, engraving speeds, and software without feeling overwhelmed. Because it’s a compact machine, the working area is naturally smaller than full-size engravers, so it’s best suited for smaller projects rather than large signs or furniture pieces. That’s really the trade-off for its portability. Overall, I think the LONGER RAY5 Mini hits the sweet spot for hobbyists, makers, teachers, or anyone wanting to get into laser engraving without committing to a large industrial machine. It’s portable, surprisingly easy to set up, and simple enough that a beginner won’t feel intimidated. I wasn't expecting a ton from such a small machine, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Assembly was straightforward, and I was engraving my first project within about 30 minutes. The engraving quality is much better than I expected, especially on wood. Fine details come out crisp once you dial in the settings. The compact size is perfect if you don't have a dedicated workshop, and it doesn't take up much space when not in use. Just keep in mind that the working area is pretty small, so it's best for coasters, ornaments, keychains, and other smaller projects. It's not designed for heavy-duty cutting, especially with the 2.5W laser, but for engraving and light cutting it does exactly what I bought it for. If you're new to laser engraving or want an affordable machine to learn on, I think it's a solid choice.
