  • Clearly illustrated, brilliantly structured, well documented and made to learn
Format: Paperback
As an experienced musican who last used DOS "Cakewalk" to produce an album in 1990, this time I switched to a modern solution, Apple's Logic Pro. Trial-and-error and online learning both proved horribly inefficient, so I tried several books, but found each a struggle for different reasons. And then I came across this book. It's an imposing 500-plus pages, but that is because it's fully documented, with many detailed color photos, clear references, and is well organized. Each sub-chapter tells what it's going to tell you, then takes you through that step by step, then tells you what it told you. No getting lost, clearly written, well indexed. And it matches the current software version too! ... show more

  • a fantastic way to learn Logic Pro
Format: Paperback
Beautifully written with clear step by step explanations. Every step is explained so you feel as if you are being personally guided by a professional (which you are) throughout the lessons. 542 page color manual with clear illustrations on each page. Access to manual online is wonderful... you can have a window open to the manual and another with your Logic Pro training project so you can easily toggle to apply what you are learning in an instant. Access to project downloads which are used in the lessons so you can see how professionals modify and improve their work. I tried learning another popular DAW (Ableton Live) through similar books and many youtube videos without much progress. The combination of this training series and Logic Pro's software has allowed me to learn and get results quickly. This is by far the best resource I have found for learning music production. ... show more

  • Solid hands-on book for learning Logic Pro
Format: Paperback
Great book but I wish it had just a little bit more. What this book does, it does very well and absolute props to the author for being very responsive and active on his forum, that alone makes this book an excellent choice for anyone new to Logic Pro. The book is very well put together and presented, but it's really a how-to book of exercises and doesn’t usually go into a lot of explanation, i.e. the when and whys of features and functions. It also goes straight into the exercises without an introduction or overview of Logic Pro, which I think would improve the book. A quick walkthrough of features, functions, setting up Logic and the most important settings, etc. would be a welcomed addition. I don’t have any issue what is covered; I may not use loops or sampling much, or at all but I appreciate being taken through them. And hands-on time walking through these exercises just reinforces the overall learning experience and comfort level with the app. All in all, this book serves as a great hands-on companion to Logic Pro and is what I was looking for in terms of the exercises vs. just a book to read through. The book teaches how to do a lot but, in some cases for me, more research is needed to better understand and do a deeper dive into some topics. ... show more

  • Weak on General Audio Editing
Format: Paperback
Like Logic Pro itself, this book is almost totally focused on music production and pretty much ignores general DAW functions. For example, podcasters need to know how to split stereo tracks into mono to isolate individual guests. There's no discussion of voice riding plug-ins. There's about one page on exporting from FInal Cut Pro (which has a miserable audio interface) and the various skills needed to do dialogue editing. I think I'd prefer a more general guide that gives equal weight to music, podcasting, dialogue and music for video, and general sound design (radio documentaries, radio dramas) then have a separate book that goes into a lot of detai about software instruments and MIDI, which won't really apply to generalist audio editors. ... show more
