I bought this plug aerator at the same time as the smartlink platform and can't say enough good things about it. It was very easy to assemble and the materials are strong and sturdy. The most difficult part of the process is simply being careful not to cut yourself on the tines as you assemble it. They aren't razor sharp or anything but are designed to punch through a lawn repeatedly so there are some sharp edges on it. It took maybe 30 minutes total to assemble it and if you look online they have a great assembly video that walks you through everything start to finish. After putting it together and assembling the smartlink platform I attached it to the platform, put 3 cinder blocks on the tray and did some test rows. The ground was not saturated but was moist down to about 1/2 inch and this seemed pretty much perfect. At that level of moisture it isn't enough to spin your wheels as you pull it around but is moist enough to pull out nice plugs of earth and drop them on top of the ground. I used this on about 3 acres of land of varying soil types and moisture content and it chugged right along the whole thing without a hiccup. After aerating I then went back over a few spots to fertilize and seed. A great deal of the fertilized and seed fell down into the holes and I am hopeful that will pay off much better than just dropping it on top of the ground or even working it in with a rake. I am very pleased with this plug aerator and wish I had bought it last year instead of messing around and pondering it for another year. It did such a good job that a neighbor asked about borrowing it and if I was interested in doing it I am pretty sure I could make extra money aerating neighborhood lawns.

The Agri-Fab system is really Good. I purchased the SmartLink Platform along with a Spike Aerator and a Dethatcher attachments. The system works Great together and is high Quality. I first aerated my 1+ acre yard when the soil was fairly dry (no rain in about a week) and it still penetrated tthe soil about 2 inches or more. I then dethatched the yard (first the rear then the front the next day) and the dethatcher pulled up about 10 large contrator bags of stuff out of the lawn. I found that dethatching and then mowing, then dethatching in opposite direction and mowing again worked best. I over seeding the lawn, including several bare spots) and the grass is coming up great. I expect a much better lawn next year. Now - my only complaint - Agri-Fab (as you will read in many other reviews - Pay ATTENTION Agri-Fab!) does a piss poor job of packaging thier stuff! All three pieces arrived in boxes that were damaged - from the inside out!!!! There is absolutely zero packaging dunnage used by Agri-fab to secure the parts in the box and heavy parts move and protrude out of the box. Additionally - the Master-Link unit box was missing several pieces of hardware that I had to purchase at Lowe's. Unsure if they fell out of the damaged box and ripped open hardware plastic bags or if they were never put in to begin with. Just be prepared, as many, many reviews have stated, to make a trip to hardware store for nuts. bots and clips that are missing. Agri-Fab - Please listen to your customers and improove packaging of your excellent equipment. It doesn't take rocket surgery to put some cardboard or foam dunnage in the box to stablize the product from getting damaged or breaking open the box for parts to fall out.

Agri-Fab 45-0474 Plug Aerator is very easy to assemble, sharp edges on Knives. Shaft is 3/4" diameter had a burr at one end that could eat into end bearing when you slip it on. I wirebrushed the burr off. I'm using this on a John Deere Spike aerator which I think is no longer available, either trailing it behind the existing hopper using both methods or swapping out axles, using just one. The JD axle is 5/8" OD, so I use bushings to bring it up to the Agri-Fab 3/4". Item arrived a day early and yes, the shaft was falling out of a box that had gotten wet at the door. Nuts and bolts bags did rattle loose inside but bags were not torn and all items accounted for. Knives were packed in a sturdy box inside carton and held up well. BTW, it has 24 knives, not 20 as some reviews state. Buy it, if you are even the least bit handy. The Smart Link Platform (45-02992) is genius and well-priced, but I already had the John Deere, and space in my lean-to is scarce. And yes, it is made in the USA and all castings, slots, welds, nuts, threads, bolts and a light protective oil coating are what you used to expect. The photo shows that it has 24 knives. On some pictures that was hard to see.

Plug aerator works pretty good. The frame that this mounts to is awful to assemble because the parts aren't made or designed well, but this part isn't bad. You may notice the frame needs its attitude adjusted a bit so that this aerator fits well. Just refer to the youtube video for assembly. Be careful not to cut yourself during assembly. Check the plugs every once in a while to be sure a rock isn't stuck in them. Lightly moisten the areas to be treated a couple hours in advance. Has plastic split bushings that they call bearings; this seems like a weak point that will quickly wear out but they're fairly easy to replace as long as parts are available.
