This is a well designed, solid piece of equipment. It does well at making kindling. Splitting hardwood pushes this tool to its limits a bit, and the hit on the top end of the firewood needs to be square or the tool tends to want to fall over. It needs to be anchored via screws (which come with it) or bolts and wing nuts to either a round piece from the trunk, a very thick piece of plywood, or as I found was the best, a piece of steel like an outdoor umbrella stand. My other wood splitter is motorized and is a bit cumbersome to uncover, fuel up and wheel into place just to splint a few pieces of firewood or kindling. That large splitter does a great job with the rounds bucked up from the trunk. This tool, on the other hand, is quite handy when I need to split wood after the rounds have been split with the mechanical splitter into quarter pieces.

Heavy duty for sure. The package showed some shipping wear and tear, but the product was not impacted. Good weight perfect for our fire pit. Would not want to split a coord of wood to heat our home for the winter but this is great for our purpose.

My kids really never liked splitting kindling because they weren’t confident about holding a piece of wood and swinging an ax. This device makes it a lot easier for them to load a small log and hit it with a 10 pound sledgehammer. At least for the moment they have a renewed interest in making wood for the winter. The product has held up well after being hit many times with the sledge. I would recommend getting some larger lag bolts and drilling out the holes in the base to make it more secure since the screws that come in the package are much too short to hold anything. Overall pretty happy with the product.

Keep in mind that this isn't going to be ideal for large log splitting, although you could probably use it for that occasionally. Where this splitter really shines is for kindling! This makes it easy to pare down larger pieces into kindling and starter pieces for use in your woodstove or firepit. It's also light enough to just pick it up and move it around to use in more than one location and to store it. Great addition!
