But then Matsunaga leaves the house after taking on a big job... and Ken and Asako, now a couple themselves, follow soon behind. • I almost knocked a star off but the overall series was delicious!
Instead of reviewing each volume, I decided to review it overall and include volume 11. Overall, the series is fantastic! I love the age gap thing, but to be honest it was a bigger age gap than I was hoping for. Matsunaga san is mature(sometimes) but very sexy and cares for everyone in the boarding home, he is intuitive in a way that he understands what his housemates need. Meeko, a mere 17 year old girl full of "cuteness" is learning to survive being around adults with varying issues. I love how she is independent and also very helpful to her housemates. In volume 11, Meeko and Matsunaga san have their first falling out and Hojo-san/Ryo makes his move on Meeko. Makes sense, really. Hojo is around her age and he is going to be a doctor. He hangs around his cat a bit much (but I adore the cat, too!) Anyway, the series and particularly this volume, leaves you torn in two because...who will Meeko choose? The handsome Hojo who is in her age range and who professed his love more than once now, or will it be the sexy-fine-handsome Matsunaga san who is always there for her and who will not back down from Hojo in his love for her? I think I feel more sad reading the final volume because Hojo was not a bad guy at all, but we know Meeko's feelings are all for Matsunaga. A great series that didn't mind toe-ing the line in May-December romances! :) Plus, the side love stories between Asako and Kentaro was amazing! ... show more

  • A somewhat unsatisfying final volume, with a few highlights that carry it.
Art: ★★★★★ Story: ★★★☆☆ I'm going to touch upon spoilers. You've been warned. As I griped about in the last volume, the separation of Miko & Jun felt contrived. I didn't change my mind with this volume. Babyish character, Ryo, spouted tropish lines, was insecure, felt feeble, and was clingy. I understand that there weren't any other characters left in the apartment for a romantic complication, and thankfully no new characters were suddenly introduced, but Ryo wasn't convincing in the role. He felt more like a high schooler than Miko did. Ryo wasn't the only problem with the story, however. Just as Jun saw the light, an accident rushed in from off stage to further complicate matters. What is it with Japan's fixation on large moving vehicles as a plot device? At any rate, Miko finally learns Jun didn't blow off her birthday, hugs ensue, she studies, gets into college, four years pass, and she graduates. Then she and Jun become roomies. That's it. In the last four pages of the second to last chapter, Miko studies for entrance exams, graduates college, and moves out. Half of the last chapter is about Miko saying goodbye to the previous cast members. Then she moves in with Jun, who isn't there when she arrives, then they have sex because she's finally not jailbait. The end. What happened to the passion from earlier volumes? Where was the romantic tension? It all felt perfunctory and uninspired. We get a hint in the author's notes. Iwashita-sensei had become tired of the series. It was a lot of drawing. She was glad it was over. The story reflected that sentiment. I gave the story ★★★☆☆, which means it was good, not great. So…what was good about it? Although I felt the story was rushed and anticlimactic, there were moments throughout the volume that shined. This was due to Iwashita-sensei's gorgeous art. Her facial expressions were masterful. Emotions like worry, distress, joy, and relief all displayed on the faces of her characters with stunning realism and impact. Her stately noses, attractive jawlines, and expressive eyebrows all worked together to elevate the story far above the quibbles I had with the plot. Each sentimental moment had maximum empathy with the reader because of her figure rendering skill, and layout design. It all shoujo artists achieve this level of competence. The airy nature of shoujo manga can lead to a reliance on ornamentalism to convey emotion. Iwashita-sensei relies on her skill with faces to tell her story. I don't know what it's like to work full time as a mangaka during a pandemic. It was clear her production schedule took a hit as the space between episodes widened. I keep that in mind even if I felt disappointed with the resolution of this story after 11 volumes. I remain awed and grateful that whatever burdened Iwashita-sensei towards the end of this run, she didn't let it affect the art. This story was gorgeous from beginning to end. ... show more

  • I'm so sad it's ending 😭
But it ended really well! Thank you Keiko Iwashita for such a great story! I love this series so much - matsunaga is my favorite character ♥️ and I'm so glad there's a story that has a happy ending but also talks about the realistic expectations of relationships outside of high school. I hope Iwashita-san will draw more manga stories in the near future! ... show more
