This is my first ever device of this type. A quick google search and I was able to find a tutorial for meshtastic installation. Metastastic.org website is very Intuitive, and the whole process takes about a minute if flashing with your PC via USB. I had two Lilygo nodes up and running, texting one another within about 20 minutes so top marks for easy installation. Still trying to out how to connect it to my mobile via the app. BT just ain't showing up, Possible user error. Overall, for $90 each, no cloud, no wifi, no network and no subscription; I call it beautiful.

Bought May 27,2026.. Returned because it worked 3-4 days then kaput. Ordered a second June 5, 2026. I up graded it to a Sandisk SD card with maps, about the 10 of July.. well last 2-3 days I notice my $22 Heltec connected to my computer is pinging with every message received, my T-DECK isn't. My compute is in my office but I take the T-Deck around the I also have a Seeeded Studio's WIO Tracker L1 pro.. I decided to sit down and figure out why my T-deck is not getting messages like my other 2 devices. Red error message- LoRa TX OFF.. cannot turn on. Proceedure: "The "LoRa TX off!" error message on a LilyGo T-Deck means the radio transmitter has been turned off in the software settings, and you can fix it by pressing the wave/stick icon on the screen or restarting the device." DID NOT WORK!! -T-Deck Firmware is 2.7.15 and latest is 2.7.26 stable. Using Flasher.meshtastic.org Attempted to flash new software connected to serial port but it gave me 2 more errors and froze. I also tried to access via client.meshtastic.org, no joy. I also barely get a day out of it on battery, so it's going back that's 2 in 2 months. there will not be 3. and I really liked it--with the exception of no GPS.. since it's portable GPS is almost manditory. Where is if in my offce 24x7 no GPS is needed.

It works and is a good device to learn how Meshtastic works, but it has a few drawbacks. I can receive messages easily, but sending them is nearly impossible without being within a well covered area and you need to be outdoors and have line of sight to other repeaters or Mesh units. If you want to be able to send messages, like from your home, you will need another unit, best to have a repeater, outside and up high. Then this T-Deck can communicate through that using the Mesh network. That would be 1 hop and you max out at 7, so keep that in mind. The keyboard is tiny and hard to use, with my hands anyway. I don't have big hands though, so it's awkward to use. The buttons are hard to push and there is only on sym button on the right below the period. So you need to have both fingers pressing 2 buttons in a tight area to use a period. A sym button on each side would make it easier to send numbers and special characters. The touch screen is okay and makes the track ball sort of pointless to have. But the screen is very sensitive and sometimes I hit stuff I don't want and have to navigate back to where I was. You can put it in Bluetooth mode (Meshtastic 2.7.xx) and use the Meshtastic app on your phone which makes it much...much nicer to use. Once I get a repeater set up, I will mostly use the in Bluetooth mode with my phone. At that point you might as well just get a less expensive unit without a keyboard. 3 stars because it works as expected. It's a good first device, but you will want to move on rather quickly to something else soon.
