Features

  • Watch real ants dig intricate tunnels: Know what s even cooler than a plain old ant habitat full of sand? One that s made with bright blue, space-age gel that glows! Watch your harvester ants dig intricate tunnels through the same type of gel that ants were sent to the moon in. Then, turn on the lights the whole ant habitat glows! It s not only crazy-cool to look at, but the lights can also encourage the ants to dig deeper into the gel.
  • Includes beautiful and extensive 16-page learning book: Ants are fascinating insects with super-duper strength, human-like ways of interacting, and oddball features (like the butt of an Australian green ant tastes sort of like a lime! Ew...). This Learning Guide is full of cool, scientific information about ants. NOTE: Due to regulatory restrictions ants cannot be shipped to Oregon or Hawaii.
  • A fun and educational gift for all ages: Its not often that a science project can be fun and engaging, but this set achieves both! Great set for individual play or as a group activity. It fascinates children as soon as they pull it out of the box and is a perfect STEM project. It fosters a love for science and paleontology in a fun and exciting way.
  • USB Rechargeable Battery: Our blasters guns come with rechargeable battery that are tested and approved for performance and quality. It was only barely warm to the touch after charging. You only need to put the battery in the charging compartment and connect the USB to charge. No batteries required

  • Kids loved it
We bought this as a compromise gift for my son who wanted a pet turtle 😂 The ants were easy to order and most arrived alive (though that's a completely unrelated purchase) so we started with close to 50 ants on August 16. We followed instructions and bored a few small holes and let the ants do the rest. the attached photo is Dec 12 when the last ant died. we did have to remove a good bit of the material the ants dug up as well as some of the dead bodies through the process, but overall a very easy process. I strongly warn against using the LED lights for very long. my son left them on overnight one day and the gel started to weep around the sides, ants were distressed and the overall colony was not thriving. we cleaned it up, aired them out and they were good as new. ... show more

  • Beautiful farm - kids learned that ants really are communists
The ant farm itself is great. It's nice that it lights up and we like that we can see the tunnels from both sides of the farm. The only problem we encountered was that there wasn't a card or "coupon" in the box explaining how and where to get the ants. Luckily we live in the desert so we went down the street, found a harvester ant colony and caught 30 ants. We put them in the fridge for 5-10 minutes and then they were easy to put into the farm. It took the ants a day or two to get acclimated. Maybe it's because they are "wild" ants or maybe they unionized themselves on the way home, but only a few ants dig at a time while the rest of the ants do nothing. They just huddle around each other on the surface while 2-3 ants venture off to dig the tunnel. They dug down and created a large "room" and then all the ants went down there and hung out for a few days doing absolutely nothing. So strange. We're wondering if surrounding them with so much gel food gives them less intensive to dig? A couple of ants died and so they created a "cemetery" in one of the corners on the surface. That was fascinating. ... show more

  • Very cool for kids or adults!
I have bought this particular ant farm a couple times through the years for my family and as gifts. It's amazing to watch the ants make their caves. I like that you can light up the ant farm. You can replace the food gel and get more ants.

  • All of our ants died
None of the ants tunneled and after 3 days, all are dead. There does appear to be quite a bit of condensation built up as well. Super disappointing.

  • Learning fun/Nevermind
I bought 3 of these! One for each child. They love them! My son even used it for a science presentation at school. Now I do I have to say, I'm not sure what is going on but with my oldest son's farm it seems to have too much moisture and the ants won't dig. I am buying another farm for him just to see if it's the ants, farm or operator error. Update: so I'm not sure why this happened but all 3 eventually ended up with so much condensation that the tunnels collapsed and they were unable to dig. They seemed to not be active as much anymore. I had to buy new farms. I went with a sand farm this time. I have had the sand farms for less than 24 hours and they have been more active and digging way more than they did with this kind of farm. It's cool and all but for the ants I think the sand is better. I was even able to connect all 3 farms. ... show more

  • Fun science project
The media could not be loaded. I get ants every year for my 5th grade science class in our unit studying insects. I always get this kit. I’ve never had a problem with it and it works perfectly! The gel is easy for the ants to tunnel through and the LED light illuminates everything so well.
