Description

The LifeStraw Flex Water Filter System is a 2-stage water filter that can be configured to be used in a variety of different ways. Similar to the award- winning LifeStraw Personal filter, the LifeStraw Flex can be used by itself as a simple straw filter to drink directly from any source of water. The LifeStraw Flex can also function as an inline filtration system with the included soft touch water bottle, as well as a hydration pack bladder or a gravity water filter system. The Flex water filter even makes it possible to turn nearly any disposable water or soda bottle into a powerful water filtration system. Simply attach the Flex onto the screw-top threads. The first stage of filtration is a hollow fiber membrane microbiological filter that filters to 0.2 microns and removes 99.999999%of waterborne bacteria and 99.999% of waterborne protozoan parasites from up to 500 gallons (2,000 liters) of water. A replaceable, activated carbon capsule serves as the 2nd stage of filtration, which improves taste, removes odor and reduces organic chemical matter (pesticides, herbicides, VOCs). LifeStraw Flex filter exceeds the NSF-42 standard for chlorine reduction and NSF 53 standard for reduction of lead and other heavy metals for up to 25 gallons (100 liters). System includes a 2-stage filter, collapsible soft touch water bottle and backwash syringe. Measures 4.7 x 1 x 1 inches and weighs 1.7 ounces. For each LifeStraw purchased, one child in a developing community receives safe drinking water for an entire school year.

  • LifeStraw FLEX - LifeStraw is great, FLEX not so much
I have just received it and have started experimenting with it. Be aware that the active part of this kit, the LifeStraw, could be a five-star product by itself. The FLEX part that that you pay extra money to get, has two design problems. Problem #1: When you squeeze the FLEXible water bottle, unfiltered water drips out the threads on the top of the flexible bottle and around the filter. It is possible to hold the filter top so that the filtered water goes into a cup and the dirty water drips down on whatever surface is below the cup, or your clothing, if you are trying to squeeze into your mouth. Problem #2: Once the water is squeezed past the bottom of the Lifestraw, you can't squeeze out any more water this way. You have to unscrew the filter from the flexible bottle, and just hold the straw loosely into the smashed down flexible bottle. In doing this, you have to contaminate the top of the straw with your mouth germs, which you wouldn't need to do if you could squeeze out the rest of the water. So you get maybe 11 oz. of filtered watered out with dripping (prob. #1), and the other half trading spit with the filter top and a shaky unattached flexible bottle. Makes it hard to share water with my traveling companion safely, which was why I paid the extra price to get the LifeStraw with Flex bottle. The flex bottle is just an accessory which doesn't deliver much useful utility. I plan to clean the cap and filter top with vinegar I am carrying with me. ... show more

  • Filters 5 liters of tap water and plugs up indefinitely
This is my first review for any amazon purchase. I've had an account since 2011. I've bought many products that I didn't care for but none enough to write a review. The concept of this is very good. I followed the directions about back flushing the filter periodically but was only able to fill my 3 liter water bladder with tap water twice before the white membrane filter was completely restricted and will not allow anything through. I used it for a trip to ecuador and it's fine if you want to blow 35 dollars for emergency and let it go and purchase another one the next time but don't expect it to last 250 gallons or whatever it says. It's a survival tool solution that will last almost 2 days. That's it ... show more

  • Not as good as the sawyer mini
Not as good as the sawyer mini. problems are fitting to the soft bottle that comes with it. mine leaks around the upper threads where flow exits, its just a loose fit. you are gonna get drips of dirty water from the area you are drinking from. the flow rate is slower than the sawyer mini by a small but noticeable amount. only positive over other filters of this type is the carbon part of the filter which can reduce plastic taste by a little. if you still want this product, you will probably need to ditch the bottle and find something else to supply water to it. ... show more

  • Great ultralight filter.
Really nice ultralight backpacking filter! Better tasting water then what you get from a similar filter without the carbon stage. I set it up as a gravity system which is just about as fast as trying to squeeze it through. I'm not using the included bottle as this doesn't make sense in any application that I can think of but a soft Evernew, sawyer or platypus works great as a "dirty" water container. I just hope they begin selling the carbon replacement cartridge soon.. ... show more

I followed all the instructions as indicated, and could never get any water to come through it. My husband had a sawyer with him, and we used it exclusively since this wouldn't' work.

  • My new travel buddy!
I’m a hiker and traveler and have used Lifestraws in the past but this product is a game changer. The Flex is small and lightweight and easy to travel with. The ability to squeeze water out of the filter allows you to fill up a pot in the backcountry or to brush your teeath in a foreign country with questionable tap water. It’s my new travel companion! ... show more

  • Great if you need it
I took it to Nigeria because I wasn't sure about the water there, but I was able to buy bottled water wherever I went as we ended up not going camping. For that purpose, it was cumbersome. You have to clean it like 2 times a day when using it to filter water and I can see how this could be a hassle. You have to take a syringe along with you. It's just a lot of stuff to take with you if you want to keep your luggage lean. It's an awesome idea if you are in a place with no drinkable water. And I'm sure it's way more convenient than a lot of water filters. I just found it to be cumbersome. ... show more
