  • Great machine at that $900 price
The one thing that most intrigued me about the LG Gram was its weight. I actually discovered it at Costco when while shopping I browsed their computer demos since I was on the lookout for a new computer. I found it rather remarkable in that regard. I’ve been using the Surface Pro since the SP3 and came from the SP7 to the Gram. Although the Gram is a bit heavier than the SP7 with its keyboard, it’s so huge, so much bigger, that it actually feels lighter. I’ve been a fan of the Surface Pros for years but I realized that I never used it as a tablet and the detachable keyboard was becoming more and more of a liability. Plus, its track pad kept giving me trouble. It kept losing the mouse cursor. And I was finding its 12-inch screen less and less ideal. So, I researched the Gram and the opinion was very good. And that 17-inch screen combined with that very light design was the clincher. Then, Amazon was offering one for $900 and I couldn’t resist. Granted, it’s the i5 with 8 GB Ram and 256 GB storage and it’s not black but gray (dark silver they call it) and it only has one Thunderbolt port, not two (although it has 3 USB A ports). But that’s fine for me and that price makes it worth it. I’m very much enjoying it. The keypad is terrific and it’s very comfortable to type on. I don’t know why some reviewers have posted otherwise, but I find it quite pleasant. The trackpad is also terrific, large and glossy smooth and extremely responsive. I thought I’d have a lot of trouble transitioning away from the Surface’s touch screen, but that has not been so. Every now and then I find myself trying something instinctively on the screen (like the two-finger enlarge or to do a quick scroll), but the trackpad equivalent works just fine and I quickly got used to using that. It’s so much larger and more responsive than the Surface Pro’s small trackpad. I’m not missing the touch screen, amazingly. And I just like the laptop aspect again. Using the Surface Pro on your lap was always a lesson in compromises. The keyboard also has a backlight (with two brightness levels) you can toggle on or off. It’s also large enough to have a number pad included, which is nice. It didn’t have a numlock key indicator on board but I just picked up a free software indicator that appears on the right of the taskbar (I got a disk drive activity indicator there also- handy and unobtrusive). Although the Gram doesn’t support the Windows Hello log in feature using your face, it has a fingerprint reader on the power button. This works even faster than Hello, though you do have to lay your finger on the button lightly, but that’s really effortless. It works instantaneously every time. I’m liking it better than Hello, I find, which sometimes had a little trouble recognizing you. Although the screen looks great, at 17 inches it does not have the same sharpness as the Surface Pro 7. That had an extremely sharp display. If you look closely at the Gram’s screen you can discern some pixilation especially in printed words. But it’s not really an issue in normal use. Also, the camera, which is above the Gram’s screen at the top center, at 720p is not nearly the quality of the Surface Pro 7’s (that’s why there’s no Hello feature). That means your Zoom image or whatever you use, will look a bit fuzzy, unfortunately. But it’s hard to argue with 17 inches that go practically to the edges of the cover. Then, although its battery longevity is pretty good (quite a bit better than the Surface Pro 7, which admittedly isn’t saying much), it’s nowhere near that 15 or 17 hour claim I’m reading in the descriptions. Maybe that’s for another model, but I doubt it. I get maybe six or so hours out of a charge and that varies depending on what you’re doing. As other reviewers have noted, although so very light, it’s quite sturdy. Just don’t stress the screen cover. Open it from the center front where there’s a little indent. It can also sometimes get a bit warm in your lap. It has only one fan that’s very quiet, but I suppose it could have used more cooling. But it’s not excessive. However, I use it for office functions primarily. If you attempted something more stressful, I would imagine the bottom could get hot in your lap. I should also say that the speakers (there are two, so it is in stereo) are sufficient but you’re not going to want to listen to much programming on them. They’re also underneath the unit, which further hinders them. And although you can charge it through that Thunderbolt port, don’t. It takes forever. Use the provided plug-in charger for much faster charging. Finally, it ships with Windows 10 Home, but installing Windows 11 Home is pretty easy (although it takes awhile). All in all, a wonderful machine. Even with only the i5 and 8GB’s of Ram, it’s quite peppy and responsive. That 256 GB SSD seems quite sufficient for me. I’ve had 128 for years with the Surfaces and never felt the pinch. I use MS OneDrive for everything anyway (why would anyone today not use cloud storage, for goodness sake?). There’s also a slot for a Micro SD card if you want more on-board storage. So, highly recommended, especially at that $900 price. Unless you really need that extra power, why pay more? ... show more

  • day 1. looking good.
a big fan for lg gram series since 2017. It was a different model, 15 inch. Now I got this baby with 17 inch (I program daily), for working remotely. It's an easy comparison, but the screen resolution... gosh, lg display is a top quality for sure... so vivid. functionality is good, but basic ram usage is ~4 GB, so I have to test out if 8GB is enough ( no issues with my old lg gram, but who know). for office work, this is perfect. light but sturdy, large screen laptop. in terms of sturdy body, i have a lot to say, cuz I did lots of "stress testing" with my old one, and it's still functional. the light weight certainly is a big plus for that (heavier body is easier to break when fallen). The only concern I have is battery, but I will try it for the next 30 days at least. update (07.06) it's been several weeks since I bought it, and working great with no issue. as sturdy as my previous lg gram. especially appreciate the larger screen; i don't think i can go back to 15 anymore. the weight is very light despite the screen size - so it's a perfect item for programmers like me. the CPU and RAM is probably an average, but I can use cloud for heavy computational work, which is rare at this point. the battery is kinda meh, but certainly one-day work without charge is not an issue, so I am okay with that. 5/5 sastified. ... show more

  • lightweight powerhouse
They aren't kidding when they say this is a lightweight unit, it is. I've had it a week now and so far so good, it's performing well with a few minor dislikes. I'm wondering how the longevity will be, I'm not sure I would use this for kids or school if it has to be transported much. The unit does run hot It was touted as 17 hr battery life and I'm finding it closer to 5 which is great but not 17. the sound on this is lacking, I find it hard to watch a movie or video and hear it with any background noise. Overall I'd purchase again but in a 15" screen just because the flex on these worries me. Other than that it seems to perform well. It is a featherlight hot little powerhouse! ... show more

  • 15 months & the hard drive died
I am in the middle of some VERY important paperwork & the hard drive went belly-up. Is it covered by it's warrantee and/or the extended warrantee? Yes but I need the filled-in legal forms NOW. Fifteen months old. I can't write more because of the anxiety this is causing me.

  • Amazingly light and efficient computer!! Replacing my tablet
I know a good bit about computers, but tried this on a whim. I couldn't be happier! Really. I usually use a tablet when I am travelling. I now have a Surface for sale if anybody wants one. No need to compromize
