For a horn to learn on, this is a great option. It's quite playable. The pistons don't feel expensive, but are acceptable and then some. They were already lubed (or seemed to be) slightly and the action smooth, not stiff and not too weak. Workable right out of the box. The sound is totally acceptable for a beginner, it's nice a clear and loud and the most important thing first is to play in tune and hold that tune steady. Then timing and dynamics, and this will get you there. Obviously, it doesn't sound have the feel or great tone of a more expensive piece, and I wouldn't drop it too much (if at all) because it could really hurt it. Put bluntly, it seems like it's made to be a stepping stone. I kind of wanted to give it five stars for what it is, but the quality is so bargain oriented, I was worried that would be misleading. As an instrument, it probably get's a 3 (maybe), but as something sufficient for a beginner, yeah, it's a 5. That's how I settled on 4. For beginners, I recommend this all day long. For a school, I'm not sure you would get many years out of this. Maybe, I don't actually know, it just doesn't seem like the tank that I had back in the day. ... show more
