  • Ideal for College and Art (while on a budget!)
Color: Mica
Since I decided I wanted to start college, I've had my eye on a Microsoft Surface computer since I wanted a good device for classes while also being able to use it for digital art. The price for such a device though came at a big price (and not being able to work on any of the internals on your own, it wasn't worth it for the long run either). So doing some research, I found this laptop! I've had it for almost 3 months now and finished my first college term with it and it went pretty well! Typing: The keyboard is pretty nice! Before this, I really just typed on our old desktop computer so it look some adjusting to the feel and feedback of the keyboard but its nice once you get the hang of it! Plus, you're able to slightly adjust the brightness of the backlight (2 modes) so that's neat too! Screen: I can't speak to the super technical details of the definition, but colors look good on it! For art, I use a wacom pen to draw directly on the screen and I won't lie that it definitely took some trial and error. First, it was finding the right program (Krita didn't work well for me, currently using FireAlpaca), then working around any problems the pen and screen have communicating. When there's no problems, super great experience. Line jitter if you want to draw super slow lines but smooth lines when you draw quick. It's perfect for sketching which is mainly what I knew I'd be doing 90% of the time with it. Back to when the pen has problems, I have an issue where the cursor spazzes and creates one random line across the page. I'm not sure if it's the laptop's fault though or the program? It happens maybe .5/10 times I put my pen to the screen so it's just something I've worked around. Palm rejection is pretty okay too and only sometimes I have a random dot where my palm was resting but I have yet to try a drawing glove so maybe that could resolve the issue! Again, it only happens .5/10 times so it's not a huge deal breaker for me personally but I understand why I can be for some. Other: The device itself runs pretty well! The only issue would be that it's dropped my wifi randomly here and there which would only be a minor inconvenience but my only fear is having it drop when I'm submitting an assignment so I've made the habit of checking beforehand! But it is the main issue I have with the device. The speakers are also pretty decent but I typically use headphones. I've seen that past models have little raisers on the inside so the keyboard isn't smashed when you have the laptop in tablet mode but this doesn't have it which is kind of a bummer but it's workable to use it semi-folded like a tent to draw on and stays in place pretty well! I've planned to sew a thin cushion to use it in desktop mode without hitting the keys but that's just me. Overall, I think if you're curious about the microsoft surface products but fear that big price point, this is a good option! College wise, it's nice to type on and a good size to keep in a backpack. Has a USB port, TWO usb-c ports (one is for charging), and a headphone jack! Art wise, it's awesome for sketching once you find the right program that works for you and only has minor issues that aren't a big deal if you're okay with working around them. EDIT: Now that I have recently changed my router, I have not noticed at all that the wifi has dropped randomly. Sometimes my service is a bit spotty but that's just where I live I think. I know some people have reported issues with the wifi and it very well could be the hardware itself but sometimes it might just be your service provider! ... show more

  • Best Laptop for College Students!! (Notice for 8 months later comment)
Color: Mica
Looking for a laptop for myself, a freshmen in college, I was so scared that I would purchase the wrong laptop. I looked and compared things for weeks on end. This was the best laptop that I could have ever bought for myself. It runs great, I find no problems in it being slow. The Touch screen works great. I love that I can fold it in have and use it as a tablet if I want. Sometimes when I'm laying in bed to watch a movie I can flip the screen backwards to stand it up. The sound is also amazing on this thing! I am able to have a lot of tabs open at once for school and I have had absolutely no troubles with anything so far. The camera quality is also fantastic for those of you stuck in zoom classes. The battery also last me through at least one, if not two full days of usage. It's really nice that the charger for the computer is a US-C cable, it works perfectly with my pixel phone! If i ever need to charge anything I just switch back and forth between my computer and my phone. Although quick thing, if there are any gamers stumbling on this computer. Although, it is a very amazing computer but I seriously doubt you can run anything heavy duty on here such as a Call of Duty game, CSGO, or anything that needs a lot of ram. If you love playing minecraft though, I was able to run that very easily without no problem. Overall it is a great computer, if anything ever happens to this one I will for sure buy from this company again. Also extra brownie points for this company because it came in A WEEK EARLIER THAN IT WAS SUPPOSED TOO!! I was shocked to find it in the mail. Any college student looking for a nice computer for school, don't worry no more because this is your best option! ((UPADTE)) 1 Year After Purchase - This computer is still working wonderfully! I got a small crack on the screen but I'm having someone replace it soon. It sucks though cause once the crack happened I lost almost all of my touch screen so hopefully the new screen will fix it! The fingerprint sensor is a little sassy, sometimes she wants to work and sometimes I have to put in my pin number instead. Besides that, I still absolutely love this computer and would recommend it to anyone. It's very portable especially through travel, which I do frequently in my large campus. The charger still works wonderfully, so does the keyboard. I love everything this computer has to offer. Now on my second year of college as a Sophomore, I still haven't seen it run any slower than it did when I first got it. I LOVE THIS COMPUTER! The sellers were a little annoying to work with, but they still responded very quickly when I had an issue come up with my screen. Overall still a 5/5!!! If you are looking for a computer, this has been my LIFESAVER. ... show more

  • Expect Heatsink/CPU Fan Issues Long-Term
Color: Mica
I purchased my Yoga 740 14IML in June 2020 and beginning this year (2023) I have had severe and annoying grinding sounds with the device's fan. I have replaced the fan myself (which is not horribly difficult) once so far throughout my ownership, yet the problem is reoccurring again. This product is very slim and cannot bear downward pressure/compression for extended periods of time, which I assume is the cause of this. I am and have been a student since its purchase and having this sitting in a backpack does not help. Before this year I have not experienced this issue and everyone should understand this potential risk before purchasing one. ... show more

  • Great Laptop, Except for Key Markings
Color: Mica
This laptop is an amazing value. It is super speedy, has a great display and very comfortable keys and track pad. I use it to VPN into my work computer and it works flawlessly. However, my one-star demotion is because the design concept for the keys is maddening! The lettering is super faint. The keys are (weakly) backlit, but when viewing the keyboard at any amount of angle, the lettering basically disappears. I am a fast touch-typist, and there is the typical orientation bump on the keyboard, but I still find myself squinting and craning my neck at the keyboard, especially when using symbols or F Keys. I tried using applique'd letters, but the feel was annoying. It is a shame that such a high-performing computer would have such a serious flaw, which seems like it would have been so easy to rectify. ... show more
