  • A great VR cam with two batteries. Ready to go from delivery.
The media could not be loaded. A great VR cam. Received the pre-order on Monday, and left to Rome on Wednesday. Had great pictures and videos. Added 32GB microSD, but it has built-in 10GB, which let you ready to go. It comes with 2 batteries. I went all day with a mix of pictures and videos on a single battery. It also comes with a sleeve to store the camera. One drawback, which a review on the web pointed out, is that you hand may show to the sides depending on how you hold the camera. I used a mini tripod as holder. One recommendation for the camera is pairing with a bluetooth remote (stand-alone or selfie-stick kind) for shutter control. It can be done with a phone, but that would be too many things to hold. A minor note. I did not have location info on EXIF, which is understandable since it does not have a GPS. I have not tested but if I used my phone to take pictures/videos, I am hoping that it probably will have the location info. Now, I have to remember all the places from where I had taken pictures. A second minor note, my post to Instagram and Facebook did not have VR/3D. YouTube posts, of course, had VR/3D since it is Google and VR180 compatible. I am not sure if my Amazon review video and pictures will show VR/3D. Overall, you will not regret. ... show more

  • Does take 3D stereo still photos and video, but doesn't provide software to convert them to standard formats
Updated review: This camera does take 3D stereoscopic still photos, but stores them in a format that is not yet supported by most software. If you open the JPEG in an image editor you do not see a stereo pair, you only see a single 2D image. This is a big frustration to experienced 3D photographers that want to edit and adjust their images. Instead of saving a pair (left and right) 180 degree (fisheye) images it stores the left image as a 2D panorama and the right image is stored in meta data along with some sound. When viewed in Google Cardboard the software does recreate the 3D image. If you put your phone into the viewer upside down you see psuedo-stereo (reverse depth) which hurts the eyes. There is no instruction about that. When you switch to Cardboard viewing there is a gray line in the middle between right and left, it needs to be at the bottom, not the top. Google and Lenovo tried to make an idiot proof VR camera, but in doing so failed to support traditional stereo photographers. There are also may design issues with the camera in addition to not letting users save stereo images in a side-by-side format (which should have been an option built into the camera). As other reviews have noticed, you can't handle it without touching the lenses-- and no lens cover. There is no view finder or screen to frame your shots. It is very easy to get your fingers in the photo because there is no easy way to hold the camera, they didn't design it so you could easily hold it with your fingers behind the lenses. You can't see the LED indicators for on/off or photo/video mode in bright daylight. I haven't yet found an app that will let me see the still photos on my Oculus Rift. I think VR 180 is the future of photography, and the problems of not supporting other existing 3D formats will be solved by others. There is already a promise by the author of the free program StereoPhoto Maker to support the VR 180 format and allow traditional stereo photographers to make adjustments and save to other formats. ... show more

  • Camera is great... until it breaks
I was having a lot of fun with this camera. Sure, it doesn't have all of the pro level features that you might want, but it was a really fun consumer level camera for taking VR180 pictures and videos. Google Photos and YouTube integration was easy. It was becoming my favorite point and shoot camera. Then... the camera stopped working. It would charge but not power on. No problem, it's under warranty, I'll just send it in for repair or replacement. Two months and five support contacts later... This has been BY FAR my worst customer support experience. It took them over a month (and at least three different support contacts initiated BY ME) to inform me that: "Your case is currently in processing status. The assigned technician is currently working on your device. There is no estimated date yet as to when it’s going to be shipped back to you. However, we already have requested to make the repairs of your device the highest priority." Three weeks later... Again, I have to initiate contact with their support department. This is where it gets good. At the beginning of the process, I was explicitly told to send in ONLY the camera unit. This camera has a removable battery, so I sent in the camera without the batteries (it comes with a replacement battery). After two months, and 4-5 support contacts (and three weeks after it was given "the highest priority"), I am FINALLY informed that they can't send a replacement without the battery. Not sure exactly why it takes two months to figure out that they need a battery... So I contact customer support AGAIN. After being on the phone for an hour, talking to two different people and being placed on hold at least four times, I was told that the case could be given to their mysterious "Escalation Department", which would get back to me in THREE business days. This was the "real" highest priority, apparently. Unfortunately, they don't have a direct phone number and there's no possible way for me to speak to them today. So, I get to talk to a supervisor, or "subject matter expert". He is even more "helpful", explaining to me that he can't send external emails (?!?), acting like they would be doing me a huge favor by not charging me for a replacement battery, and that I should hear something "within the week". This is apparently the best that Lenovo Support can muster for customers that have been waiting two months for repair. Suffice it to say, I will not be purchasing any more Lenovo products. ... show more
