  • couldn't be happier
well after wading through many reviews of the compact digitals that are available i selected v-lux 40 as a replacement for my canon g7 that failed to power on after 7 years and many great photos.i wasn't particularily price sensitive as much as wanting the most compact camera available with features condusive to use as easily carried daily use/travel camera. the ability to put it in a shirt or pants pocket can't be overstated as far as i'm concerned.the build quality is great, it feels substantial for it's size. and feels quite natural when shooting or at least it does for me. i've had the v40 for a couple of weeks now and most of material shot was just checking out the operation in various lighting situations. i never use a flash so the ability to turn that off with out it defaulting to auto as the g7 did is nice. the 20x optical zoom provides a great range of composition options. the performance in low light conditions is simply amazing. menus for the myrid of selectable options that are available is quite straight forward and easily understood without resorting to the full explanition of everything in the 198 page instruction manual. i've taken to putting the pdf of this sort os stuff on a disc and printing a spiral bound regular sized document that is actually useable when the need arises. i considered the similar sony product but was put off by the configuration of the flash and i didn't forsee the need for 20mil pixels of resolution with how i intend to use the camera. i'm anxious to see if the full hi-def video generated will make my current canon vixia hfs 11 obselete, right now i'm thinking not. whats up with the ridiculous amount of internal memory that has the capability of storing only a few photos and certainly no video ? the video generated was easily put into pe10 for editing purposes. this was particularily accidently cool. i'm not a fan of leather camera cases that attach to and burden the camera in use. sooo.. we had a pelikan 1010 micro case from some adventure and it seemed it might work as protective case for travel or storage. just get one as it appears the camera was made for this case or visa versa, works perfect. ok what don't i like, not much. in initial use the battery life dosent seem great. 1 or even 2 or 3 extra batteries may be required in travel situations, and the battery takes several hours to recharge. i'm sure i could go on.... but for myself as an advanced amature who will be using it for mostly travel documentation and creative photography work it's perfect. i bought it solely on the reviews of others, sight unseen , but if your remotely considering a quality compact camera be sure to check the vlux40 out as i don't think you will be disapointed. ... show more

  • Not as sturdy as I thought
Leica 18176 V-LUX 40 14.1MP Compact System Camera with 3.0-Inch TFT LCD, Body Only (Black) Do not get me wrong by the star provided, this is a great camera, excellent lens, focus, pictures, resolution, portability. Unfortunately Leica did not fulfill my expectations to stand behind their product and provide good service and warranty. I purchased this back in June (3 months ago).. have taken it everywhere, taken excellent pictures, unfortunately a couple of weeks ago I had a little incident with it at the office. The camera dropped from about a ft and half height onto carpeted floor, and the lens metal casing was bent, to an extent that the shutter would not close completely, this did not limit the lens from extending or withdrawing and its funcionalities. Finally got the shutter to shut completely but the dent was still there. Having paid close to 700 for this device, i figure the minor dent could be fixed either under warranty or not. So I decided to send it in to the repair ni NJ. There they told me that it could not be fixed and that the warranty did not cover it and it was voided due to impact. Instead they offered to sell me another, new (probably refurbished) camera at a discount (about 20% discount). I thought this was quite the rip off.. so told them no. Now, I am left with an expensive camera 3 months old and no warranty. Being a Leica, German manufactured and engineered (actually Japanese) I thought this camera would handle such minor fall better. I recently gave my mom my old Power Shot S90 that I had for over 2 years, and that was really a sturdy built device.. Next time I am sticking to the Japanese and/or making my purchases with American Express and their purchase protection.. I bought this with the Amazon Card, but Amazon played clueless as well, directing me to the seller (A&B Imports Ltd) and to the manufacturer. In any case.. save your money on this.. great pictures, but a wimpy machine for the money. ... show more

  • Leica at Its Best
A great camera with so many features that I can't use them all! The only problem I have is that some of its software is for PC-only and I have a Mac. Pretty short-sighted of Leica. The size is perfectly pocket-sized and its zoom capabilities are smooth and adequate for my usage. All in all, it's a great camera. Too bad that new ones aren't available. ... show more

  • Fantastic Camera
I bought this to replace a small point n shoot that was disappointing in its limitations. This camera is very powerful in both its capacity for producing excellent images and providing the user with extraordinary control of all the functions needed to capture quality shots. Out performs every pocket camera I have seen. Before buying this camera, I did a lot of research on its Panosonic version. I can't prove it by experience (I am not rich enough to buy both), but based on the research, I'd say the Leica is worth the cost. ... show more

  • Deception with authorized local technical assistance charging a lot to manage the camera repair during guarantee in Brazil.
I bought the camera last December and last week stopped working and the local Leica authorized technical assistance, in Brazil, asked equivalent to US$ 195, to manage to send the camera to the USA and to repair, forecasting something around 30-60 days to get it back. Why is necessary a local authorized technical assistance that is not able to repair here ? Why a camera like this stop working after 3 months ? Another problem is the fact there are just 2 option about the built in flash: or automatic or nothing. There isn't an option to force to use it for some circumstances in open air as a way to point up some details. March, 19th. 2013 Marcos Gouvêa - Sao Paulo - Brazil ... show more

  • Expensive but top notch
The quality is excellent especially given the size of the camera, has a great macro, , the only downside is the price.
