Difficulty: He said it took him about 16 hours to assemble and his fingers and back were really sore. (I told him not to assemble it on the floor.) There were a lot of stickers to put on it... And some were hard to get completely straight. I thought it was great how the vehicle had a Volvo sticker on it! The pneumatics, are pretty cool, and are something I've not seen on a Lego set before, but it's not totally smooth. He had to pump a lever multiple times to get the arm of the back hoe to raise, and it didn't completely raise all the way up... maybe if he would have pumped it up longer? I liked how there were different components. The generator, the trailer cab, and is it a back hoe? The trailer rolls well on the tires, the cab lifts forward and you can see the engine valves, he made them move somehow. Pretty neat! I think this is a toy that kids could actually play with instead of just sit there and look at after it's completed. I liked how the bricks stayed together as he showed me all the moving parts and nothing actually popped off. His brothers were jealous, but they didn't ask for one, and I'm not a mind-reader. Note: I bought the accessory light kit, (offered by another seller) but he didn't have any interest in using it so I'm returning it. What a great experience for my son! I have been looking at this model for over a year, and I read a number of complaints about playability. That kept me from spending so much money. Now here are the caveats - my son is much younger than the recommended age, so playability might be different for other children. He also does not mind if a vehicle is not as smooth/functional as other builds he has made. There were a few connections that he needed help on. The good: What a huge build! It is the largest he has made, and he loves the size. Each component is large, and the anticipation to put them all together grew each day. The excitement to build during free play is palpable, but we are also using it as a way to learn self-control when it is time to move on to other activities. He has done power functions, bricQ motion, and wedo 2.0, all of which have smoother builds, but again, building huge vehicles (which he adores) more than makes up for rough edges. Let’s discuss the rough edges. The digger isn’t going to pick anything up off the ground, but imagination (or balls of play doh) might be sufficient. Older children might expect better digger controls, and I can see that. The truck wheels are controlled on the top (like the jeep rubicon and other builds) but it feels less smooth on its own. Once you have everything put together, it all works because the truck needs to move slowly (it is hauling a long trailer and giant digger, after all). If your child likes fast moving vehicles, then this might not be a good fit. My son occasionally has moments when he wants the digger or truck to go fast, so he shoves it like a race car - and it does not go very far or fast. Also, we have hardwood floors so the caterpillar tracks on the digger are only useable on one rubber mat we have. I expect that it would work fine outdoors, but I don’t take the lego builds outside yet, except for the motorized ones. Unlike the champion builds, things do not fall apart with this occasional rougher play, for which I am thankful. I bought this at about $180, and it is an incredible build for my 5 year old. I think most 10+ would get more joy (and parents could get a good deal) on different kits. ... show more
