This Lego kit has been retired. It may still be found through Amazon vendors. This is an awsome kit. Detailed instructions make this kit easy to build if you take your time. This kit has a working gear box, steering, an suspension. Even as a retired kit it is a value for the money.

I had fun building the Lego Land Rover Defender. The assembly is complex (there are over 2,500 pieces), but the instructions are very clear and logical. In the end, you get a realistic-looking model (especially considering the limitations of Lego bricks) with a plethora of working features: * Opening hood, doors and rear hatch * Working steering * Inline six-cylinder engine with pistons that go up and down * Four-wheel independent suspension * Four-speed gearbox with low and high ranges * Working winch If you like Lego sets and are looking for a challenge, buy this model.     • Great Technic set for Defender lovers!

This was a very fun build — took about 8 hours of total time spread out over several days. The bags are numbered which made working through the set more organized. The functional features are really cool, such as the working gear box, hi/lo settings, drive and reverse lever, working winch, and functional tailgate. The parts are high quality, including the suspension which is quite rugged. There are multiple parts of this build that require a high degree of attention to detail which may be challenging for younger kids. This is officially an 11+ set, but my guess is it would be quite hard of a build for anyone under 16, especially if the challenge is to build it and have all of its functions actually work. As an adult, I still made several mistakes that required me to disassemble some built components to correct. The instructions made it quite clear that certain parts need to be aligned perfectly for the gearbox to work and for the steering to be aligned. I ended up needing to fine tune the gears that controlled the steering as my steering wheel was not aligned to the rotation of the wheels. Sort of like a real Land Rover! the incredibly detailed Lego Land Rover defender was very fun to build I found it a little hard toward the end of bag 2 when I had to put the to ends of the inner part of the car together. after you've put the wheels on the car it brings the whole thing together. I like how the engine under the hood looks really realistic (putting aside the fact that you wouldn't be able to see the cylinders on a regular car). I wish the inside of the car looked a little less open and techy, but it doesn't really matter. I love how the gearbox really works when you change the shifters. after the 6 hour build, I felt a little disappointed that I was finished because I couldn't build more but I guess that's the falling I always get when finished with a lego. the back door lock does not want to stay locked and closed. I loved this lego a bunch. I was inspired to buy this lego after building the 42096 Porsche 911 racecar. it is very fulfilling. a super awesome design I think you should get it. ... show more

Grabbed this at a great $150 price. Comes in 4 numbered bags and spent anywhere from 1-3hrs per bag for a total of 7.5hr over 5 days. It's a really nice balance between complexity and simplicity. Bag 2 and 3 are some of the longer parts to this set. Bag 1 and 4 are quick. While there are gear and resistance levels, unless you connect a motor, do not expect the pistons move a lot or the gears to really show any really effect. Plus they're inverted. Would recommend for a casual after work evening's chill time or a great gift for a young kid. Great intro set to technic cars. ... show more

I really love Lego that is both fun to build and can be displayed afterward - this one definitely hits both. I'm not the biggest fan of Technic, I prefer the original style of Lego but this was still great. Perfect to work on a bit each night after work and dinner and a really nice way to wind down. The internal functionality of it all was incredible and a lot of fun to see it come together. It was considerably larger than I imagined but that's my fault for not reading the specifications more closely. Once finished it looks awesome on my bookshelf! Tips: - Tweezers really help with sticker application - Pay attention to the color and size of pieces I had a few instances where I used the wrong piece and had to go back a few steps - If it feels like something isn't lining up then you have probably gone wrong somewhere, read back into the book and figure it out methodically ... show more

I had to "back-track" a little, this is a fun build. I'm only on page 82 of almost 500 pages of instructions. It's a complex set with fairly good instructions considering the level of complexity. I'm already thinking about my next set. These type of set aren't cheap, but I understand why.
