There's a lot going on in this set. If you're looking for Lego with pneumatic (air pump) elements, there aren't many choices and both of them are cranes. The other one is less than half the number of pieces but it's still at least two-thirds the price of this set. This set comes with the pneumatic elements and a cool crane, plus a truck with steering, big tires, and a cool six piston engine. It feels like it has a lot more going on, which means it's more fun to build, and when you're finished playing with the truck, there are more pieces to make something else with. As Lego's price-per-piece keeps going up, I'm always happy to find a set like this that is better value, even at full price. At the moment it's discounted about 15%, which makes it even better. *UPDATE* Now fully assembled, we can report no missing pieces. The set is even cooler than first thought, with great packaging of the pneumatics and gears within the truck body. The pieces that crank the stabilizers into place are really well used. It was a bit tricky to assemble in places, but recommended for most 9 - 12 year olds. ... show more

This was SO fun to build! Very rewarding! I was wondering how the crane and tow would work manually… found out after that the hydraulic lines actually work with air. Has an air pump on the truck that you manually pump which adds air to the crane raising it up or down and taller or shorter. Same with the rear tow jack, up and down. This was a fun set that my wife and I spent 3 days putting together. It was a lot of fun, this is the first set we've done with pneumatics. The kit was missing a piece, which is annoying, but I don't feel like contacting support for it. Also, the kit, which is the most expensive we've ever purchased, didn't come with a brick separator tool, which was really unusual. Even $40 kits that we've bought came with the tool ... show more

I ordered this because it looked cool, and it doesn't disappoint. As you put the truck together step by step, it teaches your lad how rack & pinion steering works, how a transmission works, and the basics of hydraulics using pneumatics. I have read reviews that say the steering and drive train get cross linked, making the truck either impossible to drive, or when it drives it tears the engine apart. I experienced this problem, but found that the difference was 1/8th of an inch clearance on one side of a block rather than the other. I noticed that my build was not >precisely< like the image shown in the instructions, and when I adjusted the cog to match >exactly< the image shown, the steering and drive train work perfectly. I also noticed that I got to the end of the build and needed two grey pieces, but instead had two black pieces. Upon closer inspection (and reviewing the firs 540 steps, I found that I had used the two grey pieces where the black ones were supposed to be. Thank goodness the error occurred on the outside of the truck, because it is nearly impossible to get to the insides of the truck without total disassembly and starting over. The obvious lesson here: pay close attention to the instructions! Great product overall! ... show more
