My five year old daughter absolutely loves these monster building blocks so we were thrilled to get this cavern clash set! He is a huge fan of this popular monster franchise and this was the perfect gift to keep him engaged. The set comes with 198 pieces that fit together perfectly to create two awesome figures that are about three inches tall. One is a cute little fire monster and the other is a rock creature. The build was very satisfying and it was not too difficult for him to put together with just a little bit of my help. Once it is all built the action is incredibly fun and interactive! The rock figure has a neat function where it can actually send little rocks flying which my daughter thinks is hilarious. There is also a clever lever mechanism that lets you break apart rocks to reveal a hidden crystal inside. The set even includes two smart tags that add an extra layer of interactive play when you scan them. The overall feel of the toy is exciting and action packed. This is a great value for a building set that brings epic monster battles right into your living room!

This pokemon play set is great quality, exactly what you would expect from Lego. I think they did a great job with Charmander who looks very cute. The Geodude has an amazingly good design as well. I like that both figures are well crafted and thought out. I like the lantern and the set for Charizard. I was able to launch the disc with a little bit of practice. The best thing about these is they come with clear instructions and are packaged with the number system so you never miss an assembly set. My son loves them, we have been playing pokeman stuff lately and this set ties into that nicely. A great present for the person/child in your life who adore Pokemon.

I had a good time putting this set together. The chunky style is definitely different from the more detailed Pokémon builds like Eevee, but I think it works particularly well for Geodude. Charmander is cute too, although the blockier proportions make him look a little less like the original character design than Geodude does. The small cavern build gives them a nice setting to actually play in/around rather than just having two figures sitting on a shelf, and the rotating platform is a simple but fun addition. Everything went together easily and feels sturdy enough that I would be comfortable handing it over to a younger Pokémon fan once built, something that may not be possible with more high-level designer kits. If you can get over the chibi styling, these are really cute to add to your collection. You have to supply the SMART brick yourself.

I built this Charmander and Geodude set after having put together the Bulbasaur and Bidoof set in the same wave, and while the sets are very similar (even identically priced, assuming you see these at MSRP without sales), I’d probably give the edge to the Bulbasaur and Bidoof set. Both sets are great options for young Pokemon fans though, so I’m only noting this first as a comparative value. This wave of SMART Play sets includes rather blocky Pokemon so that a SMART brick can be added without breaking up the shape (though the SMART brick is not included with these smaller sets). This results in them looking somewhat like cute infants rather than their standard more natural biological shapes, with Charmander in particular losing the salamander/lizard shape and instead looking more like a small upright toddler with a flatter snout (or the animal equivalent of a toddler, like a puppy or kitten if they were able to stand upright). While this may not be the best for fans who want very detailed models (and Lego also sells those, at a very high premium price), it makes sense to me as children’s toys because they’re easy to grasp and sturdy enough to wave around without worrying about small pieces falling off and getting lost forever. Geodude works exceptionally well in this exaggerated blocky style. While Geodude is more traditionally a bumpy ball shape, the cube shape with the arms clipped to the sides really evoke the feeling of a Geodude, with Geodude basically being a floating rock ball with arms. Geodude includes a clear base to capture the floating effect rock types often exhibit which I believe is never really explained in lore, though it’s really just the slot for a potential SMART brick. Charmander also features clipped-on arms and a tail for minor articulation. I feel the articulation for both is more for giving them the impression of a living creature, and real play activities would just involve grabbing, waving, and maybe “battling” by shoving the figures into each other face-first with the articulation being irrelevant. The accessory build for this set is a small piece of terrain that seems to be what you might see in a cave/mine (meaning where you’d find rock-type Pokemon if playing one of the games). While simple, it’s a nice piece of decoration and features two interactive elements where you can knock over a wall to reveal a crystal piece (maybe referencing some game mechanic that I’m not familiar with) and a rotating platform where you can place one of the included Pokemon. Rotating that platform pushes out a grey “rock” piece from the side wall, maybe as a form of the Rock Throw attack, and you can also just rotate the platform around to represent your Pokemon fidgeting in place while waiting for their turn in battle. (You can also place any other figure on the platform, Pokemon or otherwise, as long as they have either a 2x2 base like Geodude or two anti-stud feet that are 2-studs apart like Charmander.) There are three manuals for each of the two Pokemon and the accessory build, so it’s easy to split up the work among several children if you have more than one child that wants to participate. Both sets do feel like they’re meant to be shared with a friend or sibling, as they each have two Pokemon so that two children can each take part in an imaginary Pokemon battle. (A battle that would presumably be more engaging with a SMART brick, but I do not own one to verify. You’d also need two SMART bricks to actually “battle”.) For an adult, everything in this simple set can be comfortably built in about an hour. Getting back to my initial thoughts, I feel the standout of this set is Geodude. Charmander’s appearance is definitely cute and acceptable but not as evocative of the original design due to the shorter snout. (I think Charmander’s shorter face is more accurate from 2015-onwards, while I still remember the original design from the 1990s and 2000s.) The other set at the same price point with Bulbasaur and Bidoof basically has the two Pokemon as non-upright rectangles (as opposed to Charmander’s upright rectangle shape), but it works well for those two Pokemon’s more squat statures. All said, I’d recommend this set. It works well as a standalone playset, and I feel most of the sets in this wave of Pokemon SMART Play sets work well even without SMART bricks (though I don’t like Lego’s current strategy of only including SMART bricks with very expensive sets). This is in contrast to the previous SMART Play wave where most of the sets felt incomplete without a SMART brick. I think this set is a good choice for parents with young Pokemon fans and adult fans that enjoy the cute, blocky style, but I just think the Bulbasaur and Bidoof set is a slightly better option. I’d recommend both if you can afford both, though you may want to consider saving up for a larger set that includes SMART bricks if you find yourself purchasing many of the small “SMART Play compatible” sets.

As someone who grew up with the original set of Pokemon, I absolutely love seeing whenthey use the original Pokémon from the first series for things like building and models kits. This entire set is a nostalgic throwback to original battles in the games, and the set itself was super easy to build with the great instructions that came across with it. True LEGO quality without anything holding back the experience. It's easy to work on and looks great in my model display case!

This is an adorable Lego playset that only takes about 15 minutes to put together. It's Smart Play compatible but doesn't include the Smart Bricks to make the characters more interactive (the Smart Bricks can detect movement and make sounds or light up in response to play, or detect other characters and trigger dialogue, which is pretty cool). The Smart Bricks have to be purchased separately. That said, this is still a fun playset for Pokémon fans, even without the Smart features. My nephews love the spinning mechanism that launches discs surprisingly far, and there's a lever the characters can pounce on to knock over a rock panel. You can stage dramatic Pokémon battles, and it's very cute. Quality is fantastic with everything snapping together securely, no missing pieces, and easy to understand directions. I like that the playset holds up to actual play without falling apart, and it's easy for children to reset the interactive parts on their own. I plan on collecting this series and setting up an interactive Lego Pokémon world. I've been really happy with the Pokémon sets.
